Wary of owning a family car with a 4-cylinder? Don't be.

May 13 '03 - Updated Nov 04 '07

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Good Price, Build Quality.
Cons: Rear styling, Warranty.
The Bottom Line: The Accord DX is recommended for those looking for an economical family hauler.

I have never been overly fond of the last generation 4-cylinder powered Accord Sedans, they were somewhat underpowered, unrefined, and got fuel economy comparable to the herd of larger V6 powered family sedans on the market. For the '03 model year ...

Pros: Beautiful interior/exterior design, Road manners, Fit and finish, Value.
Cons: Seats could use a bit more thigh bolstering, stingy warranty.
The Bottom Line: The Accord EX V6 offers all the elements of a well balanced coupe.

It is amazing how much the Accord has improved over the years. Just 20 years ago the Accord Hatchback was a quasi family/economy car powered by a tiny 4-cylinder that only dreamed of one day coming equipped with leather and an optional 240 horsepower ...

Oct 17 '02 - Updated Jun 22 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Refinement, power, economy, luxury, price
Cons: Rear seat not quite up to others, handling could be sharper, huge speedometer, V6 auto-only
The Bottom Line: Still not a sports sedan, but other than that an amazingly good car. And for significantly less money than Camry, Altima, or Passat.

For whatever reason, Honda alternates when designing each new generation of Accord. One generation will be conventional as can be, then the next will actually be worth looking at, then it’ll be back to conventional. After five years with an Accord ...

Better looking than the old one, but still drives like a sedan

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Power, economy, comfort, refinement
Cons: Could be more fun to drive, wheel covers on the LX
The Bottom Line: A good car for those people who prefer the appearance of a coupe but would otherwise be happy with a sedan.

Midsize coupes are a dying breed. Ford no longer offers one. GM offers only the Monte Carlo. Honda came late to this market, first offering a coupe version of the Accord in the late 1980s. Toyota entered it later still. Yet these two makers continue to ...

Pros: Sharp, classy, refined and luxurious PLUS performs to impress. LATCH safety
Cons: Needs a V6. Coupe V6 = Expensive, and NO MANUAL. High theft rate
The Bottom Line: The revamped Accourd Coupe EX is one of the hottest new cars of 2003 for obvious reasons, but beware of price gouging and theft!

I can still remember when Honda introduced the newly redesigned Accord Coupe for the 1998 model year... Everyone awed by the cars sleekness...The prior Accords were already fairly sleek looking and drove well - but this was serious; The car was available...

Cons: Poor reliability, poor quality, too many service visits.
The Bottom Line: Great car if you can verify that the one you might buy has had the multitude of service fixes required.

Cons: Once, just once I wish Honda would hit a homerun with styling.
The Bottom Line: You can't go wrong with this car. I would highly recommend it.

Pros: Excellent gas mileage for a V6 and lots of power.
Cons: Rattles and buzzes, no cloth interior option with V6 and moonroof.
The Bottom Line: I do not recommend this car due to the uncomfortable seats and numerous squeaks and rattles.

I purchased the 2003 Honda Accord EX V6 sedan in August of 2003. After driving strictly Honda and Acura products for over 20 years and being a rabid Honda fan, I feel let down by the quality of this new Accord. The 240 hp from the V6 engine is great; ...

Pros: Very nice dashboard display and 6-disc CD changer, good acceleration, smooth ride, good value.
Cons: Doesn't hug corners, design could've been more sleek, mediocre brakes.
The Bottom Line: The car is really smooth to ride with ample power to navigate through the hills of SF. Nice 6-CD Changer also.

Having just graduated from college and gotten a job, I needed a new car. With our family having owned two Honda Accords before (1990 and 2000 models), it was obvious to me which car to pick - the new Accord 2003. I know it's almost the end of ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Roomy interior. Solid doors. Big trunk. Firm, supportive seats.
Cons: Not enough driving feedback. Redesigned bottoms of fenders contributed to more mishaps with curbs.
The Bottom Line: A very good family car. Would most likely not recommend anyone who has previously owned an EX or higher model to downgrade to an LX.

At 38,500 miles, we traded in our Signet Silver 2000 Honda Accord EX-V6 sedan for a 2003 Honda Accord LX sedan in Satin Silver Metallic. If I could have ever foreseen how we eventually ended up disliking this new car, I never would have dragged my ...

Pros: Economical, performing V6. Low maintenance cost, excellent resale. Safe, highly drive-able, good highway commuter.
Cons: Marginal leather seat comfort, steering wheel to driver ergonomics and head clearance. Quirky transmission engagement.
The Bottom Line: A trouble-free, economical, performing V6 GT Sedan. Buy it with confidence. It's not a BMW, Lexus or Infiniti, but is a close enough approximation for my needs and affordability.

I purchased my 2003 Honda Accord EX V6 sedan in August of 2003. After driving strictly GMs/Fords, a Mazda and a Datsun Z, I tried a Honda for the first time. My GMs have almost all failed me, and I was ready for a change. I am still enjoying it almost ...

Pros: Strong V6, 6 airbags, traction control, luxurious interior, CD changer, heated seats, fun to drive.
Cons: Ugly front and back, no heated mirrors, limited color selection, cheap paint, too many rattles.
The Bottom Line: Despite some annoying rattles, cheap paint, and a somewhat ugly exterior, this is still the best sedan you can get for $25,000.

The Drive: Don't let the family sedan label fool you. Nissan used to call the Maxima the four-door sports car, but I think that title should go to the Accord. The V6 is strong (240 hp), very responsive, reaches 60 mph in under 7 seconds, ...

Pros: Excellent pick up speed and handling-looks very sporty!
Cons: You really have to get used to the blind spots in the coupe.
I had a 1996 Honda Accord LX and decided to upgrade. I love the new coupe 240 hp EX-V6. It has the power and handling of a sports car. For the price, I got an excellent deal. Shop around via the internet and take your lowest price to the dealer to match or be lower - it works! I saved lots of money. The leather is wonderful and so much room in the back for the kids. I was comparing this car with the Acura and it has just as much power and several things I liked better on the Honda vs. the Acura. For the price, it didn't make sense to spend the extra thousands just to have an Acura. You won't be dissappointed.

LX 4cyl sedan-- actually do have a few complaints

Dec 18 '03
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Tight fit and finish, excellent 4 cylinder motor. Quiet, very comfortable
Cons: Very odd brake behaviour, poor local Honda service Dep.
We love our Accord, but I am highly disappointed with 2 things-
Service at our local dealer
Brakes on our car are unpredictable and "grabby", and make strange noises when car is cold- I suspect moisture condenses on discs and creates a warbling, grinding sound until discs get warm and dry.
Gas mileage is not what we had hoped with th 4 cylinder, but it is acceptable, and the car is driven fairly aggresively.
Fit and finish is typically Honda- impeccable and well engineered.
Engine is strong, quiet, and smooth. Very nice Highway car-glides effortlessly down the interstate.
At 10,000 miles, starting to get some odd suspension clunks and thumps during very low speed manuevering (parking lot speeds)
Over all we are very happy with vehicle, and will probably keep it for another 5-7 years.

Honda isn't what it used to be

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No
Pros: Handles great, nice styling, solid.
Cons: Buzzes, road noise, extra firm ride, decline from past Hondas.
This is my third Honda out of eight cars owned in my life. I am really disappointed. Maybe I just expect a lot for a $20,000 car, but here is the good and bad.

Pros: Well built, great stying in and out, solid seats, nice engine sound. Handles great.

Cons: 4 buzzes: door, cd bin, passenger door pocket, and glovebox. All very annoying. Lots of road noise. I guess this is from the tires, but I expected a much quieter ride. Very firm ride. This car feels every little bump in the road and lets you know. Yes, that is good for handling, but not for a smooth ride.

Overall, I should have gotten a Corolla or Camry. The Honda is too firm and loud. Plus, it seems like they cut corners with this build, because the buzzes are everywhere. Also, there is a ticking noise at idle, which I reported to the dealer and apparently it's normal. There was also TSB on the right camber of the wheel.

2003 Honda Accord Coupe EXV6 6MT Navi- GREAT CAR!

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: 240hpV6, NaviSystem, 6-speed Transmission, 17" rims, remote lock/unlock on ignition key
Cons: Exterior styling tame. Needs Xenon headlights like the Maxima and Altima offer.
I just picked up a NEW 2003 Honda Accord Coupe EXV6 with the 6-speed manual transmission AND the Navigation system for $23,000 before tax, title, etc. The car is a dream to drive and it's VERY fast with its 240hp V6 engine mated to the manual transmission. The Navigation system is also much more than I imagined. It's like driving a James Bond car. The interior is very sharp for a car in this price range. The LED gauges are super and the switch-gear is solid. Car and Driver says this car goes 0-60 in 5.9 sec. The 17" rims are sharp and have a special tire mounted on them for the 6-spd trim. Too bad no xenon lights, but Honda must be trying to keep Acura products differentiated.

Pros: good fuel economy
Cons: flawed designs
Since buying this car, I have experienced many problems. First, the LCD screen suddenly became dark for no reason in 2004. The dealer said this is a design defect and replaced it after one month. In 2005, during a regular maintenance in a dealer, we were told the car was leaking transmission oil. Last November, we went to Chicago at noon and parked on a street (a lot of traffic at the time). Coming back in half an hour, we found someone had sneaked into the car and stole all our expensive items. No prizing signs on the doors. Sure, we locked the car before we left. It seems the Honda anti-thief alarm system malfunctioned. Last, it was snowing when I drove home on a highway today. Although I drove very slowly, my car suddenly spun and lost control for no reason. I did not feel ABS was working at all. I was hit by a van and the entire back bump and part of the left side body were destroyed (fortunately those big truck managed to avoid hitting my spinning car). I am very disappointed with Honda's quality and will never buy Honda products any more.

Pros: Comfortable seating, roomy interior, excellent engine responsiveness, good mileage.
Cons: Horrible traction with OEM Michelin tires, marginal radio reception in all modes.
My 2003 Accord sedan has just breached the 40K mile mark and continues to provide very good performance and service with almost no (other than required periodic) service. The original Michelin tires provided TERRIBLE traction, especially on wet roadway, from day one. Replaced tires at 38K miles (when fish-tailing experienced; original tires still had nearly 1/2 tread depth) with a set of Goodyear Assurance Triple Tred@. This is a completely different driving experience: excellent handling/cornering and superb performance on both wet and snowy roads. This is my second AND LAST bad experience with Michelin over-priced and over-rated rubber.

Pros: Navigation system - it is very thorough with guiding you to your destination.
Cons: Lagged acceleration (once engine kicks in, there is plenty of power in 4cyl)
I bought this car specifically for the interior. This was a great buy! Some quirky things to consider before purchasing: 1. there is a lag when putting the pedal to the floor and trying to accelerate. 2. the navigation system controls the audio and A/C as well - it can be cumbersome to learn the system. 3. no 60/40 split seats, however you can pull down the entire bench to access the trunk, or you can fold down the armrest in the center to access the trunk (good for skis). 4. the sunroof controls are to the left of the steering wheel instead of near the sunroof.

Honda's Coupe (2-door) Doubles As A Family Car
by reesete
May 05 '04
Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: High safety record, large trunk, roomy backseat, sleek looking, high gas mileage and economical.
Cons: Sit low to the ground
I own a 2003 Honda Accord 2-door. I purchased it when I was single, wanting a sporty car that could get up and go. Not long after I got married and am now planning on having children. I was so heart-broken at the thought of having to sell my car because I thought that you needed 4-doors with children.

One of my girlfriends and I went shopping in my car with her six-month old little girl. I was amazed at how easy it was to get the car seat in and out of the car. The front seats pull forward so much we didn't even have to struggle getting her in and out.

Plus, the truck is so roomy we were able to fit her large stroller, shopping bags and her Playard into the truck with room to spare.

The best thing about this being a family car is that you don't have to worry about child-locking the doors or windows. I am thrilled that I no longer have to trade in my sleek car for a minivan!

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Sleek look inside and out, great gas mileage, fun to drive.
Cons: Cloth seats, slightly cramped in the back seat (but due to being a coupe)
I am completely impressed with every aspect of this car and the way that it drives, but I have a major problem with the seat material. The black cloth is a fuzzy soft magnet for any kind of animal hair, lint, dust, sweater fuzz, or anything. I find myself having to have a lint brush handy at all times. I am often embarrassed to invite people into my car if I haven't "brushed" my seats first. They feel great, and living in Florida I tried to steer clear of leather, but regret this decision every day that I enter this car. I have actually considered recovering them or buying seat covers which will ruin the stylish and sleek interior look. I would definitely upgrade to leather seats in a minute if I had to buy this car all over again.

Pros: Sporty, well appointed, value
Cons: BRAKES ! wind noise faulty LED display
I am the owner of a 2003 Accord EXL (4 cyl). The brakes were replaced at 6000 miles - all around - no questions asked..... That should have been a clue to me! Now the LED Display has gone - gotta wait a week for the part to be ordered? And the brakes (at 21500 miles) are beginning their same old story of thunk clunk grind and whine. I previously owned a 98 (same trim) and had some bizarre moments with it as well (the front seat came unwelded from the frame!) Maybe I should go look for a Toyota tomorrow - any suggestions?

I bought a 2003 LX-V6 coupe last May and I think it's a great car for the money. Other than the wrinkly window trim which was covered under warranty, I haven't had any problems with the car.

I read that other owners have had a host of other problems (hard starting, tranny problems, etc) but my car's been just great.

Cons: Been in the shop too many times for a new car.

- Sheet metal dents too easily.
- Been in the shop twice for the factory alarm system.
- brakes problems with noise. Repaired under warranty.
- doughnut for spare tire.
there were a dozen other little things I noticed too over the two years that i've owned it.

If you do get this car I recommend you get the 5yr/100000 mile warranty.

When turning corners you can feel the vehicle twisting , you also hear creaks and cracks coming from doors and windshield.
Steering feels to mechanical
May have driven one of the bad ones

Pros: Great quality, gas mileage, price
Cons: Honda doesn't make a pickup truck
Ok, ok - Hondas and Toyotas are made in America too, but the makers have a higher standard that they put into their vehicles than say Ford, Dodge, or GM. I like my 2003 Accord so much, my wife and I just went out and bought a 2003 Civic this past weekend! Both vehicles run great. Both vehicles also scored and ranked very high for the crash test ratings http://www.hwysafety.org/vehicle_ratings/ratings.htm
Honda has a great reputation for making quality vehicles and once you decide to purchase one, you'll never go back to second rate again - we won't. The 4 cylinder model runs just as if it had a 6 cylinder, I have no problems passing when I need to. I definately recommend checking them out.

Pros: I love this car with the few exceptions noted.
Cons: Air leak and fast idle.
I bought this car 2 months ago after looking at the Toyota's and Nissan. There is an annoying sound of air leaking in on the drivers side door at about ear level. This starts at about 60 mph. The same on the passenger door. I looked at the rubber molding on both the doors and can see a visible dimple in the rubber where I know the air is coming in. I showed it to the dealership but for some reason they tell me its normal for some air to leak. "Bull". Hopefully I can get further by talking with a Honda rep. The last thing is when the car is cold it idles too fast. This can be a problem if you are parked behind another car. Keep your foot on the brake.

Pros: 4 cyl.(!)acceleration, gas mileage, seat comfort, attractive, seems pricey, roomy, fun, reliable, crisp handling
Cons: blind spot, linty cloth seats, wheel covers, touchy brakes, factory tires,
I have owned my Accord for about 2 and a half years. Overall, I have been very satisfied. I originally wanted to get a 6 cylinder model with a sunroof. I found that my torso was too long to fit in the car with the headliner that comes with the sunroof. I ended up getting a 4 cyl LX. I spent WAY less than the other people on this website that bought 6 cylinder coupes. (I spent around $18,500.) Granted, I have no sunroof, navigation system, alloy wheels or leather seats. I do have the piece of mind that my car is worth EVERY penny that I spent. Most professional reviews of this car rate the 4 cyl. as better than the 6 cyl. I can see why. The engine on this car is as smooth as any 6 cyl. that I have ever tried.
