An affordable sports coupe for grownups

Sep 23 '02 - Updated Jun 22 '05

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Price, quality look and feel, sophisticated styling
Cons: Tall people won't fit, ride, rear seat, handling near the limit
The Bottom Line: Inside and out looks and feels much more expensive than it is. Lacks competitors' finesse near the limit, but also does without tacky styling details. A great buy.

The automobile market is currently awash in car’s that look nice on the outside but look and feel cheap on the inside. Nissan products leap especially to mind, but many domestic brands also do poorly here. More and more, it seems you must spend over ...

Pros: 6-speed manual transmission, Interior and exterior design, Price.
Cons: V6 offers less horsepower than much of the competition's 4-cylinders, V8 fuel economy.
The Bottom Line: While not as fast as the competition, the 2003 Hyundai Tiburon GT V6 offers good acceleration, an excellent interior, and looks to die for.

Once a small sports coupe built on the Hyundai Elantra's platform, and a car with a 140 horsepower engine as its up-scale power plant, the Hyundai Tiburon for 2002; sold as a 2003 model comes with an all new suspension, optional V6 power, and ...

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 4.0 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Head-turning looks, excellent build quality inside and out. Killer sound system. Tremendous value.
Cons: Overall performance only adequate. Uncomfortable back seat.
The Bottom Line: Hyundai has a winner here. It's a knock-out, with high quality and value to boot. It's a lazier performer than some competitors, but still a great touring coupe.

These days, almost every Hyundai review starts with a small blurb on how bad Hyundai cars used to be, and "now look at how far they have come". Although Hyundai's sales have improved dramatically over the years because of this quantum leap in quality ...

Pros: Smoooooth tranny, beautiful styling, cheap
Cons: Some interior peices seem cheap, poor gas mileage
The Bottom Line: Nice looking cheap car, my choise would probably be Civic or Celica, but this is still a good car.

My roomate bought his 2003 Hyundai Tiburon GT used last year when his slow-dying VW Jetta stopped dying so slowly. He drove it off the lot with 22k on the clock, all the while the poor Jetta was spewing coolant on the dealer's lot. My roomate isn't a ...

Pros: terrific handling, quick acceleration, long warranty, aggressive styling, under $20,000 base price
Cons: 4-cylinder out-powered by weight, rear-seat accommodations, ride, loud tires, needs more cargo space
The Bottom Line: The Tiburon is a quick, stylish sports coupe. It will, however, have to need to become more reliable over time for me to rate it higher than just AVERAGE.

When the Hyundai Tiburon first came out, it was to replace the South Korean's original sports coupe , the Scoupe. Redesigned for 2003, the new Tiburon continues the automakers tradition of long warranties, and sporty styling at a reasonable price.

The Bottom Line: The Tiburon is an absolute bargain. Handles well, great acceleration and looks, and a host of premium yet standard features. Loaded for $19,200...what v6 in it's class can compare?

Cons: Could use a bit more power at the mid-range, back seat is a joke.
The Bottom Line: I'd recommend this to anyone looking to buy a solid performance car but doesn't want to pay the $25,000 price tag of comparable Japanese cars.

So I was getting a bit tired of my 1996 Mustang GT and got myself looking into what I might buy to replace it. I knew I wanted something sporty, but at the same time I had a moderately tight budget of about $20,000 I was trying to stick under. I ...

The Bottom Line: This car had constant problems. I spent too much time in the repair shop there was ever a time that SOMETHING wasn't broken. Cheaply made. Lots of road noise.

Pros: Great Looks,Enough power out of the gt-v6,Great standard features.
Cons: poor quality sound system, too quiet for a sports car.
The Bottom Line: The Tiburon is a steal for a cheap fast and furious car.

First, I would like to say, that anyone not wanting to buy a Hyundai for reliability reasons, should reconsider.Ever since the early 90s, to present Hyundai has completly changed on the spectrum of reliability. In the 80s, you couldn't give a Hyundai...

Pros: Well-equipped, reasonable price, appearance, low cost of parts and servicing.
Cons: Headroom, no electric seats.
The Bottom Line: For single people or couples with no kids or big dogs this car is hard to beat.

When the first gen Tiburon came out I could not think of a vehicle that missed the mark on more styling cues than the Hyundai. Everything about it was slightly wrong. The back end wasn't big enough. The wheels were too small. The engine wasn't peppy...

Amazing Bang for the Buck

Pros: Power, Handling, STYLE, Comfort
Cons: Back seat, quickly worn stock tires
This vehicle surprised me when I first drove it off the lot. I was first attracted to it by the looks, but once I drove it knew it was exactly what I was looking for.

The car feels amazingly powerful for 172 hp. I've added a few cheap mods to mine which put it easily over 200 hp and didn't cost a lot of money. It doesn't really need it tho, it felt very powerful right off the lot.

The handling is also very good, thanks to Michelin Pilot Sport tires on the stock 17-inch rims. Very good deal. Sadly, the Michelins will only last 20k miles if you're lucky.

Everything seems to work well together in this vehicle, and the only thing that surprises me about it is that so few people drive them.

TERRIBLE QUALITY

Pros: Incredible handling. Little engine loves to wind up.
Cons: Very poor quality Bad service
Our 2003 tiburon is literally falling apart. Not driven hard, and yet the door handle came off in my dad's hand. See http://www.tomvale.com/hyundai.htm for a full list of the problems we've had, and how much was NOT covered by Hyundai.

Don't believe their claims as to "Honda Quality". It's nonsense.

Also, the three dealerships we've dealt with have all had disappointing service.

Pros: Beautiful lots of options Great aftermarket support
Cons: NONE!
One of the most original looking cars on the road and a blast to drive. After almost 30,000 miles on mine so far I have had ZERO problems! There are so many cool things to upgrade for the car, turbo's, superchargers, body kits and that makes it a blast to own!

Here is a great price on superchargers if you want one:

A Great First Sports Car

Pros: interior with Leather; attractive ;fast enough; Small back seat (No carting around freeloaders lol)
Cons: The fuel economy is poor ;Can attract unwanted attention from your local law enforcement
I bought my 2003 Hyundai Tiburon GT after suffering through a difficult relationship with a Saturn SL2. Needless to say I am impressed, you are simply not going to find a better deal on a sport coupe. During my research period I looked over many other Sports cars and the tiburon was exactly what I wanted, great looks and decent preformance. I have read many reviews on them before buying and found many complaints as to the agility and power. I mean people lets be honest you are spending less then 20K, you are not buying a Aston Martin or a Lambo and will not get the same preformance from it. As far as competition with the celica goes, don't race it. If you insist on it supercharge it and then you can see the celica in the rearview mirror. I do not think it is even fair to compare it to the RSX as it is not in the same price range and for a completely diff. audience. Simply put the Tiburon GT is a great fist sports car and one I hope to own for at least 6-7 years.

AWESOME CAR

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 5.0 Recommended: Yes
Pros: Looks, price, a/c works awesome, seats are extremely comfortable
Cons: Ride quality
I bought my tiburon over a month ago. So far no problem except a sqeaky brake on the back, ( I accidently left my
parking brake on for a couple of miles). I love this car. I am turning 30 this year, and this will be my first sports car. I love the looks and everything about this car...EXCEPT the ride. I have to drive on a bumpy highway for 30 miles everyday to go to work and it is not pleasant. I turn up the music so I dont have to listen to the road noise in the cabin. But when you are on the interstate this car rides like its on a cloud. Its like night and day the difference in the ride. This is the only
complaint I have about this car...but I guess I should have expected this with it being a sports car with sporty suspension.

Cons: highway noise and noise
Every since i've had that car i cannot stop playin with the shiftronic. The car is great, looks really nice, and i havent had any problems. There is alot of highway noise but its liveable. Yet, for the money i paid, the car surpasses any minor problems

After 58,000 miles....

Author's Product Rating: Product Rating: 3.0 Recommended: No
Pros: quick
Cons: windows go after 58,000 - 59,000 miles along with the radio
After my Tiburon reached 58,000 miles the passenger and driver windows are having a hard time going up and down and the light for the radio began to come in and out. Now my wheel barring is shot and I just got the car may 2007. and i already had the brakes changed, and the tires wore. I heard many people have had the window problem I figured the wheel barring and the brakes are normal wear and tear but the windows! it is ridiculous to have that problem. they should have done a recall or something because a number of people i have spoke to that have the 2003 tib. have had or have the same problem. Something should have been done.

Torque Steer

Pros: Great acceleration!
Cons: Torgue steering!
This car in an Automatic DEFFINATLY has a torque steer! Accelerate hard and this car is going to pull. So if you are experienced in that sort of thing then it is no problem, but rookies need to watch themselves. It is slight enough though that one could get used to it and learn how to keep the car under controll. This little car sure does have some power to it though for how small it is! I am loving it for being my first car ever. :)
