Less gas mileage but better handling, ride, pickup & power than average SUV.

by
Jul 23, 2009 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great handling, pickup, vision on the road, smooth ride, heated seats, sits super high.
Cons: Gas mileage, a little tippy (what SUV isn't?), replacement parts are expensive, limited dealerships.
The Bottom Line: If you want a vehicle that stands out, handles great, has great acceleration, holds 5-7 passengers, and more, get it! Don't expect a sports car in a luxury SUV.

Okay, so a lot of people start off by reading the cons....so YES, this does:A) Get below-average gas mileage than an average SUV. (Constant 4WD & V8 4.6 Liter engine is why).B) It is more expensive to replace parts. (Because it's a rare ... read more

Bought mine for cheap

by
Jun 17, 2009 (Not Yet Rated)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: tank feeling, character, theater seating, go anywhere vehicle, low resale if you are the buyer
Cons: thirsty, expensive repair bills, low resale if you are the seller
The Bottom Line: Buy it if you want a vehicle with character. Don't buy it if you are expecting a vehicle with zero problems.

4 months ago I picked up a used 2003 Discovery SE with 85K miles for 6000.00 USD. It was cheap because the 3 amigo lights were on and it had a cracked windshield.  I took a gamble and bought it knowing repairs were needed.  Prior to ... read more

Doesn't get much better

by
Jun 10, 2008 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Exceptional offroading, well built, good looking machine
Cons: Of course Gas mileage and not for road drivers only
The Bottom Line: Bottom line is the Discovery is meant to go off road so if you haven't been in one off road I'd wait before commenting.

If you use the Discovery for what it's meant for it doesn't get much better. We frequently abuse our Discovery in the Colorado mountains and love to do hard core off roading. Go anywhere yes indeed. It doesn't get much better. Yes it is on a truck ... read more

I'm Sold.

by
Jun 6, 2008 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Style, cheap$parts for import, capilbility, average mpg, fun2drive, freindly dealers, views from cabin.
Cons: turning raidus is low for big city driving, wheel well bumpers fade, thats it!
The Bottom Line: Buy it, unless its not taken care of.

Iíve Had my 03' Disco for 8 months now, it has 90k miles on it. like many SUV owners I bought it to bring the family, and tow the toys, however is was surprised with much more! The land rover is of course great off road, but also great for highway trips ... read more

Great car, unless you want to drive it

by
Jan 6, 2007 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Cute, awesome off road capability.
Cons: Criminal mileage, unusable room, poor drivability
The Bottom Line: Do not get as a people mover. 4 wheel drive is overkill for its usability

When I got drove my Discovery off the lot, I was thrilled. It looked great, had a fabulous green color, I could see everything - what a great ride. Then life happened. I live in a snowy part of the country (well, not this year) and I loved the fact ... read more

This Rover Hits A Sour Note

by
Nov 3, 2004 - Updated Nov 12, 2004 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Status Symbol of sorts, Leather seats, powerful engine
Cons: Reliability, build quality, very poor gas mileage
The Bottom Line: I wouldn't recommend it based on our experience but others out there seem to love them.

Owning a Land Rover was status symbol where we lived in Vegas. Upon first inspection our Red Land Rover Discovery SE with beige leather interior seemed like a dream come true so we purchased it. The first year with the Rover went fairly well and we ... read more

Do anything, go anywhere, all without looking like a minivan.

by
Sep 13, 2004 - Updated Mar 29, 2007 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Just doesn't look like it can go off-road like most SUVs; it actually can.
Cons: Gas mileage, sparse number of dealerships, pricey parts and options.
The Bottom Line: Soon the LR3 will come out and replace the Disco as we know it. While the LR3 will be nicer, there's only 1 Disco. It's truly a classic.

I bought this used Discovery with only a few thousand miles on it. The owner traded up to a Discovery HSE or something. As one reviewer complained, the resale value on these Land Rovers is horrible. But it equaled a great deal for me, because I paid ... read more

overall, I like it

by
Jul 29, 2004 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great driving position, stable ride and cornering, genteel curb appeal, good character
Cons: GAS GUZZLER, hard to get in/out of, poor turning radius, too tall for urban living
The Bottom Line: I like its lord of the manor character and forgive its faults. If you like cars with character, this is for you

I purchased a 2003 Discovery SD, the base model, and added a front sunroof and CD changer. It comes standard with vinyl, power adjustable seats (cannot tell the difference from LR leather) and although it lacks some of the amenities of the SE model, I ... read more

Great Off-road/bad road capability horrible resale and gas mileage

by
May 13, 2004 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Great off road/rough road capability. Handsome interior and fixtures. Great towing capability.
Cons: Horrendously bad resale (lost $19K in value in 10K miles) and awful gas mileage.
The Bottom Line: Not worth the loss in resale value when other similar vehicles are available

The pros of this vehicle are that it can go just about anywhere. Neither I nor my husband is an off roader but we used ours for long distance trips over questionable roads and in often poor weather conditions. At this task the vehicle performs ... read more

My 2nd Discovery

by
Feb 4, 2004 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 50 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Reliability, construction, capabilities, amenities
Cons: fuel economy, rear passenger door access
The Bottom Line: A solid, purpose built vehicle capable of handling a variety of road and off road surfaces. Plenty of options and amenities. A solid value.

I recently traded my 2001 Discovery for a 2003. It had 53,000 miles and stilll had the original brake pads. Brake wear can depend on how a vehicle is driven. Between the customer loyalty discounts and savings on a 2003 versus 2004 I lowered my ... read more

Huge snob appeal

by
Dec 28, 2003 - Updated Oct 15, 2006 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 30 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Distinctive good looks, rarely matched off-road agility, great on-road manners.
Cons: NO gas mileage, massive dealership attitude, poor driver side legroom for six footers.
The Bottom Line: It's an okay truck - would recommend it to a friend ONLY if you can get a good deal.

Have only owned it since Oct 03, have logged 7K miles - some highway - none off road. Did take a 2002 off road for 15 minutes. Amazing ability, the truck does what the maker says it will do AND the 2003s are supposed to do it better. Like my ... read more

Discovering how a Discovery can harm your road trip.

by
Jul 7, 2003 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 20 Recommended: No

Pros: Supposed to be excellent for off-road, lots of storage areas.
Cons: Uncomfortable seats, hard to climb on, doors have a very small ratio of aperture.
The Bottom Line: I did not enjoy riding or driving in this vehicle. It has limited cargo space for an SUV, it looks quirky in the outside and it is certainly quirkier inside.

I planned to travel to Cincinnati from Washington DC, the trip was for four adults and I thought tha ... read more

Great SUV, don't expect it be a sports car

by
Apr 13, 2003 (A Very Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Great looks, decent power, command view, top notch off-road capability
Cons: Seats don't go low enough, low premium gas mileage, gas & brake pedal positions
The Bottom Line: Don't expect it to be something it's not (read, not a car) and you'll love it. A few British quirks, but that's what makes it great!

I traded in my 1998 Lincoln Navigator for a 2003 Land Rover Discovery S. RIDE The new engine on the 2003 Discovery(taken from the old Range Rover) is tons better than the old one. Compared to my old Lincoln Navigator, the ... read more

Cons: Interior button control center looks like the same old stuff
The Bottom Line: I have to say it seems all it's cracked up to be.

I took the LandRover Discovery for a test drive this week to cover it on a review column. Found out that it is uniquely warranted by the Royal Family of England. It has a sort of stylish classic safari design, good on and off road capabilities. ... read more

First time Discovery owner

by
Nov 26, 2002 (A Helpful review)

Author's Product Rating: 40 Recommended: Yes

Pros: Solid look and feel, proven engine, good towing capacity, 4X4 like no other
Cons: Tilt wheel is a joke, requires premium fuel and a lot of it
The Bottom Line: If you need a real 4x4 with serious towing capability and serious curb appeal look no further than the 2003 Discovery

I have always been a Ford fan and so my first choice in looking for a 4X4 was the new 2003 Navigator. What a gorgeous and functional redesign it is and it had everything I was looking for - comfort, luxury, towing capacity for a 21' boat, etc. Just one ... read more

Pros: Unmatched off-road capabilities, also handles well on-road, definitely stands out in a crowd.
Cons: Bad mileage, poor turning radius, very expensive to repair and for normal wear & tear.
