Pros: Power, refinement, all-wheel-drive traction, ride quality, interior materials Cons: Nothing special to look at, nose-heavy handling, small trunk The Bottom Line: An eight-cylinder German sedan for well under forty has its appeal. Sadly, the W8 still looks like a car that sells for under thirty, and isn't much fun to drive.
Reviewers of the Passat have often stated that it has the look and feel of a much more expensive car. It seems VW has decided to call their bluff. For 2002 a W8 engine became available in the carfor $38,450. So, can the Passat truly support such a ...

Pros: Sweet Engine, Solid Ride, Looks Cool Cons: Price, Interior Space The Bottom Line: The W8 is worth the money if you really love Volkswagens. If you want others to know you can afford a $40k car, this isn't the one for you.
If ever there was an American success story, Volkswagen has got to be it. Theyve come a long way from what I like to call the dark days of the Dasher. If you dont remember VWs early transition in American from odd, old world...

Pros: Plenty of power, good interior room, fuel efficient for its size/power. Cons: No interior storage space, wiper blades are outrageously expensive, dealer service could be better. The Bottom Line: A decent car if you don't mind the lack of storage in the interior, and can afford $75 wiper blade replacements each year.
We purchased a 2003 VW Passat GLS wagon in November of 2002 as a replacement for our trusty old 1993 Subaru Legacy L wagon. The Passat has been mostly a joy to drive and own, but there are some small issues with it that tend to take away some of the ...

Pros: Good balance between sport and comfort. 5 speed manual matches engine much better than automatic. Cons: Radio reception, sound system in general uneventful, gray interior not complimentary. The Bottom Line: Recommended for the person who wants a balance of family friendly, sportiness, and luxury, without significant expense realizing some concessions are required for a taste of each.
2004 GLX I thought I would provide my experience given the tremendous assistance I found in the many personal reviews I have read. This is intended as food for thought to the extent it helps other consumers. First, I come from a group of Automotive ...

Pros: A reasonably priced German Driving Machine Cons: The German way of designing a German Driving Machine The Bottom Line: If you want an average car, there are cheaper options. If you want a family Driving Machine, this is the car for you.
Depending on what you are looking for, the Passat may or may not be your idea of the ideal family car. To illustrate what you are getting into, I will offer a comparison between the Taurus, the Accord, and the Passat. (I traded in an Accord to buy the ...

Pros: Interior fit and finish high; nice appearance/design; decent MPG; lots of cargo space Cons: Reliability mediocre; turbo lag; brakes require constant, expensive maintenance The Bottom Line: Good comfortable car works best when not driven frequently and must be maintained meticulously. Reliability & maintenance costs a problem. Recommendation: Maybe.
I own a 2003 VW Passat GLS Wagon with 70,000 miles on it which I bought new from a prominent local dealer in NJ. I opted only for the premium Monsoon stereo and automatic transmission; everything else is standard equipment, which is fairly generous. ...

Pros: Gas mileage, Smooth Ride, Upscale Appearance, Manual Transmission, & Turbo! Cons: Velour seat material in base model GL and reclining the front seats. The Bottom Line: An unexpectedly sporty, reliable, and affordable "family" sedan that can blend in with it's upscale relatives.
I purchased a new '03 Passat GL 1.8T manual transmission as a compromise with my wife -- I wanted a sports car (or the closest thing I could afford), but she wanted a sensible, family vehicle. I was on the fence between the Passat and the new (at the ...

Pros: German Engineering, German attention to detail and quality. Performance and smooth, refined V6 Cons: Plastic glove box, no trunk release latch on trunk, no rear airvents. The Bottom Line: There is no car for under $30,000 that compares. I have looked at Honda, Nissan, Volvo, GM, Ford, Subaru, all fell short of this German Touring Sedan "on a budget."
I went to buy/lease an Audi A4 at the local dealer in Scottsdale, AZ. With in minutes he was talking about a $500 per month with money down etc.... and took a very snotty attitude with me when I questioned the value of the lease. As the car was...

Pros: Handling, acceleration, gas milage, fit & finish. Cons: Premium fuel, very expensive repairs. The Bottom Line: I would NEVER buy it used, only new with a good warranty.
We bought our new Passatt in the fall of 02, it was the first new car purchase we made in quite some time. It was our intention on "keeping it forever" using only Mobil 1 oil, following all the suggested maintenance and so forth. Our particular ...

Pros: Cars drives well and feels solid, handles well at higher speeds (above 80 mph), safety Cons: Quality of construction, mechanical breakdowns and major safety issues, dealership service non-existent The Bottom Line: DO NOT buy this car because of mechanical and safety issues; also, dealership washes hands with responsibility.
I bought my 2003 VW Passat GLX in July 2003. I swear that I will never buy another Volkswagen for as long as I live. It is now April 2006 and I have had the following issues with my car, all before 20000 miles: 1) The brake rotors were warped and ...

Pros: Wonderful ride, great handling, great gas mileage, smooth shifting 5 speed Cons: a little on the pricey side, 1.8t is a little slow off the line. The Bottom Line: When you are sitting and driving in this car, there is no question that you are riding in a precision built driving machine. I would absolutely recommend this car.
{I've updated below)
This is the first ever car I have purchased new, and frankly, it is wonderful.
I test drove everything on the market. I don't exactly know why, but I fell totally in love with the idea of a station wagon. [a...

Pros: Powerful engine, All wheel drive, Safety, and Comfort Cons: Weight, Gas mileage, looks like all other Passats The Bottom Line: Power, safety, all wheel drive for low to mid $30K range. Sub standard service departments.
I recently spent considerable time shopping for a car for my wife. Her 95 BMW 325 was too small for us (new baby),and was not good in snow and rain, and it was getting rather old. My task at hand was to find a safe car with all wheel drive. Suburu's...

Pros: Engine; Tiptronic transmission; ride and handling; solid, well-built feel; styling Cons: Limited interior storage space; light colored interior shows all scuffs; tires; stereo The Bottom Line: Except for tire issues the car has been perfect.
It's good looking, has a nice ride, and fuel economy is good (I'm averaging 26). It's a buy.
I've been driving my 2003 Passat for three months now. It's a Colorado Red GLS model with the tiptronic transmission, 4-cylinder engine, Monsoon stereo and winter package. After 4,000 miles here's my two cents on the car:
Pros:
