Pros: Safety, interior volume, ride quality, third row available Cons: Handles like an SUV, non-linear power delivery, rear visibility, third row cramped The Bottom Line: A European MDX, the XC90 does not handle nearly as well as a BMW X5, but it holds more and rides better. The actual MDX is a better value, though.
The Volvo brand is more closely associated with safety than any other. Many people buy SUVs because they are perceived as safe. It seems a natural fit. Yet Volvo did not get a true SUV to market until 2003. (The station wagon-based XC70 doesnt ...

Pros: Handling, Safety, Updated Emissions, Space, Good Power Cons: Gas Mileage though better than most, Can get pricey The Bottom Line: The XC90 offers versatility and safety in a nimble, fun to drive SUV.
SUVs are under a lot of controversy now for various reasons including increased air pollution over cars, safety problems and increased gas consumption. It seems every time I look at an auto news site, like TheCarConnection.com, I always see at least one...

Pros: Styling; front and middle seat comfort; luxury features Cons: Gas mileage; driver visibility; truck-like ride. The Bottom Line: Friends don't let friends drive gas guzzlers.
In all fairness, I'm sure there are lots of people who would love this car. I had hoped to be one of them, but I'm not, and as a result, I'm trying to sell this vehicle after a scant six weeks of ownership. As any review here will tell you, the Volvo ...

Pros: Contemporary Styling, Extensive Safety Features, 3rd Row Seats, Good Sound System Cons: Gas Mileage, Cargo hard to reach without climbing on to the car The Bottom Line: Overall, considering the styling, features, and service, I strongly recommend this car.
The demand for this car is still extremely high, and we had to order and wait couple of months. At f ...

Pros: Exterior, interior, zoomy T6, Volvo safety
Cons: Gas mileage, possible transmission issues
The Bottom Line: I love the car and would recommend it with caution--perhaps wait until the 2005 models start arriving. This way Volvo will have more time to "work out the kinks".
We were very leery of purchasing a brand new model car. Working in the medical device industry I am all too aware of the problems that can occur with neophyte products. However, due diligence and research was done and we moved forward. We are overall e ...

Pros: Design, safety, power, navigation, and looks. Cons: Poor reliability. The Bottom Line: Find a German or Japanese substitute for this Ford owned division, as build quality is abysmal.
The XC 90 has been a disappointment for me. I choose the XC 90 after hours of research, and it was ...

Pros: Very comfortable to drive, very solid, great performance Cons: 5 cylinder lacks a little power, but it's worth it for the great 5 speed. The Bottom Line: If you are considering the MDX, the X-5, Tourag or Porsche SUV, you need to look at the Volvo XC-90. Great styling performance and ride. Solid as a rock!
I just bought a 2004 XC-90 with the five cylinder engine and AWD. This is the best SUV I've owned (a ...

Pros: The XC90's exterior styling is among the best of its peers. Cons: Heinous gas mileage and excessive interior cabin noise are major faults. The Bottom Line: I cannot recommend the Volvo XC90 with its Hummer-like mileage, excessive road noise and interior cabin faults. For the money, there are plenty of other choices.
I previously owned a 2002 Toyota Sequoia and sold it because it was a gargantuan truck and averaged a dismal 12.5mpg during my 15 months of ownership. On April 1st, 2003, I bought an XC90 because I like the exterior design plus the EPA window info stated...

Pros: Attractive look, sound interior, quality seats, navigation system is magic Cons: The fuel consumption is high, torque of engine pulls vehicle left The Bottom Line: If you have the cash, buy it. Get the navigation system so you don't get lost, this should help make up for the mileage. Car has no peer!
Overall we have been very impressed with the vehicle. The exterior has a handsome look, it appears rugged yet sophisticated. (SEE UPDATE BELOW)
The interior is a real treat. The leather seats are firm and reminds one of a quality leather...

Pros: The car has great pick-up and it has a smooth ride. Cons: The interior noises drive me and my kids crazy! The Bottom Line: The car has too many interior noises for me. For the money I spent I wanted a nice quiet ride.
The main reason I chose this car was the body and the word Volvo on the front. I grew up associating Volvo with safety and reliability. For years I could never really tell the difference in the year of a Volvo ,they all looked the same. When this ...

Pros: Nice interior, safety, Cons: Price, interior width The Bottom Line: A Pilot or an Acura is a better bet
We wanted an SUV with 3 seat rows. We dismissed truck-based models as heavy, rough and with poor mileage. This meant Pilot and Volvo among car-based models (we dismissed Acura because it is just a Pilot with a higher price). Remarkably, these have as...

Pros: Exterior styling Cons: Interior Lack of styling/ Options incompatability The Bottom Line: If you can get past the spartan interior and do not want the good headlights, then, by all means test drive this car. But also drive an RX300 for comparison.
When the first glimpses of the XC90 came out I immediately identified with the sharp styling and functionality of the Swedish carmaker. This SUV IS a real head turner, on the outside at least. And the price range puts it in contention with the RX 300...

Pros: Great drive, nice styling, comfortable. Cons: Poor, Poor reliability!!!, many problems with integrity, electrical and transmissions!. The Bottom Line: AWFUl CAR, AVOID! Run for your life. This car will cost you more than the price tag. Maintenace is expensive, problems are rampid and transmission is faulty.
We bought a 2004 xc90 that was a dealer demo and had 20,000 miles on it at purchase. It had all the records and was driven by the General managers wife while they owned it. We bought it in the summer and loved the SUV on how it drove, most ...

Poor start but getting better

Pros: Styling, drive, comfort Cons: Build quality, fuel consumption (but we all knew that)
Having waited for delivery of my XC90 with great excitement my first weeks of ownership were filled with disappointment. First the handbrake seized, then a loose drive shaft was diagnosed then leaking fluid meant that the power steering had to be replaced (a problem seen by another reviewer). The phone was tempremental and has given up working - I am still waiting for "new software". A seat belt was replaced and a rear headphone socket didn't work.
In all I was without the car for about 10 days in my first three weeks of ownership. My local Volvo dealer has fixed all the problems except the phone. The car is driving well and I am very pleased. One does wonder about all the safety features which are part of buying this sort of car. Most are invisible to the driver until they are needed. If Volvo can't get the basic mechanics right is the rest ok and will it deliver in an emergency?
