Easy to Use but is the Quality there?

by OpalMan OpalMan is a Lead on Epinions in Computer Hardware, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Nov 06 '00
Pros: Quality in almost all facets of the product
Cons: Flimsy Case makes it less than ideal for travel
As usual, this is a product I have some experience with from my job. We use several of these modems both in the main building and when we send employees out for Car Sales and the like.

PRICE
First let's tackle the issue of price. Yes,...

This Modem Got My iMac Up to Speed

by johnshepler , Jan 07 '01
Pros: Reliable connections at high speeds, status lights on front show activity, audio lets you know it's connecting
Cons: No USB model for new Macs - needs adapter
I was likely to break my leg drop kicking our iMac DV Special Edition in sheer frustration. The computer would almost never log on using the internal modem and V.90 script. When it did, it then almost always disconnected within an hour. Only when I...

It doesn't get any simpler.

by harleyds , Jun 08 '00
Pros: Durable, Reliable, very well built
Cons: Sometimes it challenging to hide it.
What’s there to tell about the 3Com 56K External Modem? This was a purchase decision made by my companies Purchasing Department. They chose a standard then kept with it. A pretty good choice if I might add.

The installation is a snap. Open...

Your Internet experience is only as good as your modem

by amerpie , Jul 04 '00
Pros: speed, reliabilty, software, documentation, customer service. Do you want me to go on?
Cons: It is more expensive than the throwaway modems advertised in the Sunday Best Buy circulars
When evaluating a modem, the factors to consider are: reliability, speed, technical support, and price. A shortcoming in any of these areas is simply not acceptable. Most users who own an off-the-shelf computer purchased in the past two years more than...

A Fine Modem.

by regotti , May 23 '00
Pros: Everything cept the cons
Cons: Price still steep years after release, 56k is getting really slow really fast.
Quite an elegant little piece of hardware. There hasn't been many pieces of hardware that I can give a whole hearted stamp of approval on. Usually there is some little problem with drivers, some little flaw caused by designers rushing the product out...

External is the only way to go

by Furo , Aug 05 '00
Pros: External. Solid connections that intelligently re-sync when needed.
Cons: Might require firmware upgrades, but that goes with virtually any modem.
Being a computing professional, I often get asked a plethora of questions, one being what kind of modem to buy. I ALWAYS tell people to buy external modems. There are two benefits.

First, you can be sure you're not getting a Winmodem....

The Courier Business Modem: The Best 56K Out There

by csprague , Nov 25 '00
Pros: performance, reliability
Cons: price
This is a review for the USR Courier External 56K. I couldn't find the category for it, so I'll put it in with the regular old USR 56Ks.

The Courier is a beefed-up Sportster modem. It has every feature you could ever ask of a modem. A list of...

Robotics Modem Really Works

by ouidam , Oct 16 '00
Pros: It works. It has graphics bar to monitor the rates, etc.
Cons: Expensive and box has no mention of needed cord.
I purchased this based on the recommendations of Compaq, my local server, and my neighbor. I had the good old (not) reliable Winmodem in my Compaq computer. After a years worth of phone calls to Compaq they suggested I upgrade my modem. They wouldn't...

Great modem... when it works

by tc17 , Aug 15 '01
Pros: Great performance when brand new
Cons: QC lacking; warranty service
Out-of-the-box, this modem is everything I expect of 3Com and USR. Great connect rates, great sustained throughput. You can even get the V.92 upgrade although that's just a toy until your ISP reciprocates.

Unfortunately for me, the honeymoon...

Excellent Modem

by evand , Jun 30 '00
Pros: Reliable, easy to use and install
Cons: Doesn't come with a cable
When I was building my computer, I didn't want to use up a slot with an ISA modem (PCI modems are a gamble with Linux; they can be Winmodems). I had always had excellent results with 3Com/USR products, and I figured that the 56K External would be an...

Leader of the Pack

by mr_sallis , Feb 12 '01
Pros: High Quality, Excellent Performance.
Cons: Pricier than most.
I originaly got my 3com external modem when the WinModem that came with my computer began to be more effort than it's worth.

It installed easily and I didn't have any problems, which in and of itself is a big plus in my book.

And...

You want to spend less then go ahead and get less

by op1500 , Aug 07 '00
Pros: Easy, Reliable, Durable, Customer service you can count on
Cons: With this brand? Ha.
I have owned and sold dozens of modems over the last 15 years, Hayes, Rockwell, Bocca and on and on. I now own 4 modems, all USR. Two are external (desktops) and two are PCM/CIA (laptops). Why? Because they are well worth every penny. Recently I woke...

AN EASY INSTALL & UNBELIEVABLE RELIABILITY

by DENGNY Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, May 16 '00
Pros: easy install, reliable, lifetime warranty, excellent tech support
Cons: price is a little high
Not too long ago, you could choose a modem based on a couple of features, one of which was speed. If you decided to purchase 56k rather than a 33.6 kbs modem, you then had to decide on whether to go for K56Flex or X2. Today, it's very different....

This modem is awesome!

by darrotta8 , Jul 10 '00
Pros: Reliabilty, durability, ease of use
Cons: higher priced than many other modems, but well worth it
The reason for purchasing this product is because of its reputation. I have worked with 3com/USR modems for a few years now, and I find that these modems are simple to use and rarely encounter problems.
I believe that this modem is good for both...

Pros: Easy To Install, Reliable Connections, X2, V90 standards
Cons: Higher cost than most modems.
How I bought It

If you have line noise this is a great choice

by paul287 , Jul 02 '01
Pros: Easy to install. Resistant to line noise=faster connections
Cons: none noted
I recently lost my Supra Express external modem to a lightning strike and was on the look-out for a new modem.
I live in the country, and I do mean the sticks. I doubt we'll ever have cable access in this area, so I have to rely on a standard...

Caveat emptor

by rwebb , Sep 08 '00
Pros: looks nice
Cons: short MTBF
While it worked, it worked well. When it died, it took out the whole house.

From new out of the box in January 2K it lasted until early September. The decay was slow at first: gradually becoming harder to get and hold a high speed connection....

Best of the Best

by howardgraber , Oct 04 '00
Pros: Service, Reliability, Compatability, Durability
Cons: Analog Modem
This external modem by 3COM is the best personal choice for modem communications. I bought this device because it has been engineered from it's predecessors of 14.4, 28.8,& 33.6, and each one of those modems has also been top notch in terms of...

get something cheaper

by shmanda , Jul 12 '03
Pros: ease of use, stable, great website support
Cons: price, can't withstand small line surges
Pros: Easy to install, fast & stable download speeds, website has drivers and a lot of information.

Cons: Too expensive compared to PCI modems, not clear which cable to buy, and most importantly - only took one little surge to kill it.

WARRANTY PHONE CALL A RIPOFF

by limepoint , Sep 19 '03
Pros: Looks Nice
Cons: Warranty is vapor warranty, buy a ZOOM modem.
The phone call to inquiry about warranty service for a US Robotics modem is a ripoff. They put $8.00 on your credit card just to talk to them. The phone number that you must use is a 801 (NOT 800) number; I assumed that 801 must be just another toll f ...

3Com Data/fax 56K modem external

by oppfinneren , Apr 09 '02
Pros: Brand name, reliability, external, lights, on/off switch, volume control
Cons: None!
Not much to say really, other than this is a top notch modem. Forget internal modems which fight for IRQs with other PCI devices, this external modem is reliable, solid, nice modern design and easy to use.

It's got all the familiar modem...

Pros: Very good speed
Cons: None visible yet
