  • Great little storage device

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Oct 18, 2000
Pros: Easier to save files than a tape backup
    Cons: the unit isn't portable

Summary: I recently set up a new PC for my family. We had a old out dated Pentium 150 machine that I built several years ago. In the old machine we had to use a external tape back up drive when it came time to save vital information.Well the tapes for this tape ... read more

Pros: Easy to use, inexpensive, fast, and password protected.
Cons: Not portable and not widely used.

Summary: I love my Iomega Zip Drive 100(mb). It was one of the best purchases I've ever made. It provides lots of storage space, privacy, and it will be my saving grace when my HD finally dies. Yes, Zip drives may be obsolete in this scary age of new ... read more

    Pros: Fast, Easy, Small disks.
    Cons: none

Summary: The zip drive is a great product. Although they hold much less space than a CD-R or CD-RW they are still great. They are easier to upload and download files than CD's. The software that you can download for them allows you to automatically back up ... read more

    Jun 19, 2001
    Pros: Excellent customer service
Cons: Drive shouldn't have failed to begin with

Summary: The symptoms of a "click of death" drive start with the drive emitting a series of audible and distinctive clicking sounds, either when a disk is first inserted or when attempting to read or write data to the disk. Fortunately Iomega is taking ... read more

    Jun 17, 2001
Pros: Perfect size for a super floppy, almost everywhere
    Cons: Not everywhere, questionable reliablity

Summary: Iomega's Zip media and drive format was very popular, but still haven't saturated the market. The Zip drive was a promissing floppy replacement more so during 1996 to 1998. During those years, PC manufacturers started to integrate Zip drives into thier ... read more

Pros: Easy to use for those who are only moderately computer literate
Cons: There are faster and easier ways to mobilize your data

Summary: I bought my first and only ZIP drive nearly two years ago. It was a time just before I returned to school and I am glad that I made the purchase. It is an internal IDE drive and I it is included with an Iomega CDR/W and a Toshiba CDROM. It ... read more

Pros: Easy to setup and use. Reliable disks
Cons: Not everyone has one. You may have to carry the drive around. Expensive media

Summary: Due to the nature of my work (I build new PCs and deal with hardware and software of both new and older PCs every day) I certainly need some kind of device to transfer data between them. I also need a device to transfer drivers and utilities to and from ... read more

  • Zip has it's advantages.

    Apr 23, 2001
Pros: Reliable back-up. Easy installation. Swappable between USB computers.
Cons: High cost of media, compared to CDs.

Summary: Back in the mid 90's, when the size of computer files started to skyrocket, the 1.44 floppy disks just couldn't handle the audio and visual files, or anything else, that usually were eating up your hard drive space. To store them you had to get an ... read more

    Mar 23, 2001
Pros: Small, Quick, Easy To Use
    Cons: Only 100mb

Summary: I began using Zip drives back in 1996 when the best of them was a very slow parallel version. Back then it was excellent, considering CD burners cost around $500 and a blank CD could run you $15-$20 each. Times have changed, 100mb's is not ... read more

Summary: I bought an external USB 100mb Zip drive to transport files form home to school. I like it because I don't have to hassle over burning a CD-RW or transfer files via e-mail. If Zip would sell these things for a little less I'd recommend that ... read more

Pros: 250MB of storage, USB compatibility, sleek new look
    Cons: obsolete technology, expensive media

Summary: ZIP drives have been around a long time, from way back when writing cd's on your home PC was more of just a dream. Back then, 100MB on a portable drive was very impressive. These days 100MB is nothing, and 250MB is close to nothing. The newer ... read more

    Pros: GODS GIFT TO DESIGNERS
    Cons: Limited Disk Space

Pros: not waiting for a burn
Cons: catridges are more pricey than CD-Rs

Summary: I do not want to examine weather or not a CD-R or a ZIP drive are one a better choice than the other. For one, I have both and like it this way - if you have to choose, read the other 55 reviews, they will give you even too many reasons to like one ... read more

  • you'd be foolish not to get a cd-rw instead

    Feb 24, 2001
Pros: much faster than a floppy, much more storage capacity
Cons: not as much capacity as a cd-r

Summary: This device comes in handy every once in a while when I want to back a few files, but overall I have to say it is not worth the money. Each disk can hold only 100mb, ( i guess now they have slightly larger capacity disks 250mb). If you want to store ... read more

Summary: My college professor required the purchase of a zip drive. We work on Macs at school, and at home, most of us have PCs. I didn't get it. What's the purpose of a zip drive? My desktop's CD-RW CDs hold 700MegaBytes. The zip disk? 200MeaslyBytes. ... read more

    Feb 6, 2001
    Pros: Robust, faster than CDRW
Cons: Lower capacity, lower market penetration

Summary: When it comes to removable storage it’s really about CD-R/RW versus Zip. And there is no clear winner, as it all comes down to do you know anyone with a CD/Zip drive. Obviously lots of people have CD drives and so can read CD-R/RW discs but far less have ... read more

  • Thing of the pre-RW

Rated a Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jan 8, 2001
Pros: Was good in 1999, at least a 140 Gigabyte DVD/CD-RW is only 5 years away
Cons: Not good now, competition is better, everything else includin color of the system, cost of the system, and cost of the disks, can't be read on almost all computers like a CD-RW can

Summary: 100 Megabytes of storage in mid-late '99 was great. Well now you can store 6.5 times that amount on a CD-RW and the CD-RW drive does cost a little more but the disks a lot cheaper (under a buck compared to $10 for a ZIP 100). This is only good for ... read more

Summary: My experience with the Iomega zip drive all began 2 years back with the purchase of my new 500 celeron computer. It had seemed like a great idea to buy the drive at that time for a few reasons. First of all, unlike the dated 3 1/2 inch floppy disks, zip ... read more
