Pros: fantastic photo transfers, touch buttons, easy install, great quality for good price Cons: some programs were not needed, some text did not scan with full characters
Summary: This was a scanner brought in for a test scanner in class last week. UMAX offers great quality, good software packages with overall decent performance. Well known for very comprehensive software packages and their easy to follow Owner's Manual. ... read more

Pros: Good price, good software bundle, adequate for faxing and documents. Cons: Freezes up, bad-quality color scans, cannot get it to work with XP.
Summary: I originally got this scanner to run under Windows 98. It worked adequately, although I never could get a good scan on photos. Every single one of them had stripes and lines all through them. I got the scanner used, so maybe that had something to do ... read more

Pros: Inexpensive Cons: Questionable software; little or no tech support
Summary: This is a scanner for the occasional user, not for someone looking for speed. The VistaScan software packaged with the scanner is probably one of the worst available in the marketplace. It's slow, not very intuitive, and lacking in sophistication for the ... read more

Pros: Works fine as expected Cons: Not super fast; incompatible with XP
Summary: I thought a scanner would be a useful addition to my home PC, so I tried to find a steal on just anything. Well when the initial scanner a bought (a no-name brand I can't even recall) crashed my system (2-3 year old Gateway running Windows 98) and took ... read more

Pros: Cheap, USB, some good software Cons: Warm-up routine before each scan, misleading specs
Summary: I bought this scanner to replace my Artec AT6 SCSI scanner, simply because I ran out of slots and wanted a USB device. I find that it scans well, though some of the photos suffer from banding, which is not in the photo itself. Other than that, OCR has ... read more

Pros: Good color, resolution. One-touch buttons. Cons: Terrible customer support, not a good company.
Summary: The UMAX Astra 3400 is an OK scanner. But UMAX is one of the worst companies I have ever run in to in terms of customer support. First, about the scanner.
The 3400 scans relatively well, with a few minor glitches. It's not ... read more

Pros: decent software Cons: poor picture quality, bulb lasted 1 month, poor customer service
Summary: I purchased the UMAX Astra 3400 and after only one month of use (light use), the bulb went bad. First, I noticed horizontal grey lines on my scanned photos, then colored vertical lines. Then, I noticed the bulb was dim and flickering. The guide said if ... read more

Pros: Cheap! Includes good software. Cons: A little flimsy.
Summary: Installation
You have two choices for installation. You can, of course, run the installation program from the CD, or you can install the drivers manually. As a plug and play device, once you plug the USB cable into the computer, ... read more

Pros: Cheap, works great for the price, easy to use and install Cons: Slow at high res, can be noisy
Summary: I got my Apple Umax Astra-3400 scanner free with the purchase of my Dell Dimensions 8100 computer. And i cant say that i wouldnt have bought it if i didnt get it for free. Yeah its not the greatest but if your not trying to work on professional photos ... read more

Pros: Fast enough scanning, easy to use, smaller than other scanners Cons: none
Summary: This scanner, i would say, is close to perfect. The 600x1200 resolution scanner with 42 bit color allows me to scan everything with utmost clarity. It's much smaller than some scanners i've seen. Yes, you're probably going to say, "Well, the Canon one is ... read more

Pros: Low is price, Easy to use Cons: Too Many Programs, Needs to be off at startup
Summary: When I bought a new computer, I didn't need many of the extras such as the printer, scanner, or monitor (I had an extra one). But where there was a huge rebate for a 3 of them, I just had to get them.
The scanner was a great accessory. Once ... read more

Pros: Inexpensive, easy to use, doesn't take up very much space, comes with lots of picture-programs. Cons: Cord that plugs into the p/c is much too short.
Summary: I purchased this Umax scanner along with the rest of my computer about 9 months ago. I have no complaints about it except that the cord that plugs into the back of the p/c is too short, which doesn't leave much room to move it around or re-arrange. ... read more

Pros: one touch buttons, easy installation, good quality, good price Cons: no power button, lots of useless software
Summary: After looking at the system requirements, price, and resolution of some other scanners, I decided to go with an Astra 3400. The store I purchased it at also had a $20 mail in rebate, which was another factor in my decision.

Pros: inexpensive, fast, simple, high resolution, high color depth Cons: loud, some color scans show lines
Summary: I bought this with a Lexmark Z22 printer for $65 after rebate for both of them. I upgraded from a UMAX Astra 2000U to the 3400, and am pleased overall. The 3400 is much faster than the 2000U and has higher color depth (42-bit compared to 36-bit). It was ... read more
