Pros: Price, easy to load paper and print cartridges, quiet Cons: Print quality, cheap telephone handset, will not work with answering machine connected

We could not set it up to our satisfaction
by ced1106 ,Feb 22 '07
Pros: Well-written manual Cons: Was not able to setup to our satisfaction.
We had a major installation problem: In order to receive faxes from some regular callers, we had to minimize the amount of time it took for the fax machine to *listen* to the incoming call for the fax handshake protocol. In other words, we had to reduce to one the "number of rings until the machine goes to the message center (built-in answering machine)", and cut the answering message to about four seconds, barely enough time to state our phone number. While Brother has an automatic fax-back number you can call to test if your fax is receiving, this number worked while incoming faxes from a regular caller did *not*. I'm not sure if this is a problem with this fax machine, a general problem with fax machines, or a problem with our regular caller.
Additionally, this fax machine is quite powerful and has a number of features. While the manual is pretty well-written, this nonetheless makes the machine complicated to program and I would not recommend it as a first-time fax, nor to anyone not used to programming electronic devices.
