Pros: Free Cons: Limited Options, Mutant Ad-Banner
After a short layoff, FreeLane is back! Better than before? Hardly. But at least there is another national choice in Free Internet providers. It does need more access numbers and to revamp the lame ad bar.
This review is for FreeLane...

Pros: Free and most dependable to connect Cons: The "bar" ,slows surfing down a little
I have been using a local ISP for about a year now and some days it doesn't connect me or when I get online it is so slow surfing the web..
I decided to look into some of the free ISP's and found this one to be the best so far..It's pretty...

Pros: Well... it used to provide decent internet service Cons: Ad bar that won't dial the modem, inability to download
I had a major blow dealt to me this past week. I am one of those cheap people whose sole connection to the internet is through free ISPs. I used FreeLane as my primary connection, with My Points Connect as my backup. Unfortunately, both services were...

Pros: well, it's still free Cons: few dial-up numbers, sluggish, tedious download
Prudence dictates a back-up ISP (internet service provider), especially if you elect to use free services. Being tighter than a size-6 girdle on a size-16 lady, I do. Freelane, from Excite has been my choice as a reasonably good back-up service. But...

Pros: Free, many numbers, good viewbar Cons: health meter
Excite FreeWorld was the first Free ISP that I tried, and it will probably be the last due to its good service. When I was trying to find a free ISP I wanted one that had many access numbers, a small download, and an easy to use viewbar. FreeWorld has...

Pros: Umm, hmm, well, it's free! Cons: Slow, hard to install/create new account (register)
No. And that is saying something, since I really hate AOL (check out my profile page). I have had several problems with FreeWorld that, had I not been motivated by desire to experience the unknown world of free ISPs, would have caused me to delete it...

Pros: FREE service, FREE email, FREE search engine (IE) Cons: Must click banners, limited email storage space 3MB
I recently had to delete my AOL account after being a loyal AOL user for the past 6 years. I needed to find a FREE isp that I liked. I'd already had the software for Free i internet service but was not happy with the service mainly the email address,...

Pros: free and seems competent Cons: could be faster
Freelane (by Excite) has been transformed as of today (12/10/00). I am thrilled at the change!
As many of us know, 1stUp.com has been powering many of the free ISP’s. Frankly they did a mediocre job. 1stUp is now history. They went down the...

Pros: It connects reliably. Cons: Wastes screen space and requires clicks.
After using FreeLane for a month, I knew I had to find better, and I did. Here's what is wrong (and right) with FreeLane and what I recommend.
I can't believe I used to pay $19.95 a month for Internet access. My first free ISP was Freewwweb,...

Pros: It's Free! Cons: Disconnects Often
Update 12/13/00 ~ FreeLane is no longer powered by 1stup (as of last Sunday). They did do me the courtesy of letting me know my service was being canceled the day before. Great, lots of time to find someone else! I was impressed when I got an email...

Pros: free, 42-46K connection speeds, no drops, no busy signals Cons: vroom vroom of the signon
Clarification and Update: (June 2, 2001)
FreeLane is dead. It was good while it lasted. The clarification I'd like to make is just that I think this product listing should probably be deleted now that the product doesn't exist anymore....

Pros: FREE AND REALLY EASY TO USE Cons: SOME MINOR ISSUES
12/17/00 - Excite.com no longer offers free internet service.
I found Excite in December of 1999. I had been accessing the internet through Worldspy and wanted a "back-up" for when Worldspy was having issues. So I signed up,...

Pros: Free, quick dial-up, fast connection Cons: Ad banner can be moved around but not taken away
OK, it's one thing to be skeptical about getting something for nothing but quite another thing to keep throwing 20 bucks out the window every month. Please don't tell me you're one of those people who are STILL paying to get online. As I write this, I...

Pros: More or less reliable, free Cons: Disconnects without warning, software interface crashes, no longer available anywhere in Canada
January 8, 2001
I would just like to add a quick update to this review. Two important points need to be made: 1) FreeLane is no longer available anywhere in Canada; 2) the service I had with FreeLane deteriorated over time, and just before...

Pros: Decent setup. Small adbar. Reliable Cons: Very slow.
I joined the World Wide Web infusion a few years back and always used Search Engine portals. I've never been a fan of Excite because it is average. I recently started a freebie webpage and needed a separate email address, so I tried Excite's free email...
