Pros: 3.34 Megapixels, Swiveling Zoom Lens, Great Feature Set Cons: A few Minor Compatibility Concerns
My first opportunity to try the Nikon Coolpix 990 was in June of this year, and I was really very excited, since I had heard a lot of good things about this new Nikon Digital Camera. I spent about an hour scanning the manual and getting familiar with...
Pros: Great detail and color Cons: Pricey, needs bigger memory card, eats batteries
Recently, I decided to retire my trusty Nikon F3hp and go digital. I was tired of buying film and then shelling out big bucks to get the prints professionally done. Typically, I burn through a lot of film each trip, and quickly came to the conclusion...
Pros: Ultra-sharp high res photos, Lots of user Cons: Batteries drain too quickly, Included Software Sucks
The CoolPix 990 is the best consumer digital camera to date. Having 3 other consumer digital cameras in my collection (Kodak DC260, Kodak DC265, Kodak DC290), I must say that the 990 beats its competition hands down in terms of the quality of the photos...
The Coolpix 990 has a sharp 3x zoom lens, rendering 9 Megabyte images from moderate wide-angle to short telephoto with the choice of a quick all-auto shooting mode or a fully customizable auto/manual shooting mode. You can choose between previewing the...
Pros: Sharp, contrasty lens, 3.34MPixels, neat twist body. Cons: Limited zoom range, limited to 400ISO, not constant aperture zoom.
For my first digital camera, I wanted something that didn't force me to give up too many of my film camera habits: manual control of focus, aperture and shutter speed, use of external flash, and interchangeable lenses.
Although it is now discontinued from Nikon, the Coolpix 900 remains a highly viable candidate in the "under $1000" digital camera arena. Even if you need to get one from a used camera dealer, or an auction site like eBay, don't overlook this...
Pros: Great LCD screen, rugged, customizable Cons: Price, supplied CompactFlash card is small
The Nikon Coolpix 990 is a high-end, sophisticated, weird-looking, ruggedly-made, not-for-the-timid digicam that became my entrance into digital photography.
I have used 35mm Nikon cameras for many years, and I'm a big Nikon fan. But that's...
I had my camera on order from the day pre-orders were being accepted. It arrived a few days ago and I quickly put it through its paces side-by-side my Coolpix 950. As with the 950, the 990 eats batteries. Nikon should supply NiMH batteries with the...
Pros: Great pictures, 3.34 megapixels produce great printout up to 8 by 10, Durable, Great interface Cons: Built in flash is weak (like all point and shoot cameras)
I have been waiting quite some time to buy a digital camera. I figured, like almost everyone else on the planet, that prices would continue to drop and quality would improve as time went on. Eventually I was going to have to "stick my feet in the...
Pros: unrivaled digital image quality Cons: not for novices
This camera gives seriously advanced photographic performance with unrivaled digital image quality! It has a 3x zoom Nikkor lens with 38mm to 115mm coverage(35mm equivalent), giving clear, sharp images plus 4x stepless digital zoom, and it's very...
Pros: great pictures, easy to use, pro settings Cons: crummy case supplied by Nikon, no viewvfinder-lcd
The pictures are breathtaking, but protect your investment by buying a decent case for it! I recently dropped mine, which was inside the flimsy case supplied by Nikon, and it now needs to be sent in for repair (the auto focus isn't working). I'm...
Pros: great picture quality Cons: does great video without sound though
Tips: Don't listen to sales people, don't get your inf. from late night TV, they don't know either. Go out test them out and talk with owners. Cross check site like www.pcphotoreview.com and www.megapixel.net it easy do it your self.
Pros: It's the picture quality stupid. Cons: Complexity, the manual, no type 2 memory slot and included software
I have both a Nikon 990 and a Canon S20. I bought the S20 and got the 990 as payment for some consulting work. What I really, really would like is a combo of the two. First the S20 advantages:
The swivel body design is what intrigued me, and after using it for 6 months now, I am sold - especially in crowd settings. I do a lot of work at parties, receptions, family gatherings, etc., taking candid photos of the event. The camera can be held...
Pros: macro ability can't be beat, and the nikon lens is amazing. Cons: size, design and usability can be beat. Ridiculously expensive accessories.
I'm a veteran of digital cameras. I've owned them for over 5 years now, dating back to my first model - the venerable Epson PhotoPC, circa 1996. The Nikon CP990 is my 6th digital camera. It won't be my last.
Pros: Swivel body, great picture quality, features for the money. Cons: eats batteries, cumbersome menu, a few niggling concerns.
There has been a lot of hype over the Nikon CoolPix 990. I think the camera is living up to most of it. You get very good quality digital photos out of a camera that retails for less than $1000 ($899 at time of review in the central Indiana market)....
Pros: Sharpness and advanced capabilities Cons: Battery life and Red-eye
Back when I used to own a photo lab, I prayed that digital cameras would never be this good. Well, they did and now I'm no longer in business.Recently I laid my bitterness aside and decided to go digital myself. I was not prepared for the...
Pros: fast in taking pictures, fast in reviewing pictures, fast in changing camera settings Cons: Battery life
I received my Nikon Coolpix 990 Friday 5/12/00. WOW! This is a sweet camera. I shot 104 pictures the first weekend. I especially like how fast the thing is: fast in taking pictures, fast in reviewing pictures, fast in changing camera settings.
...
Pros: Extensive manual control option, good photo quality Cons: Complicated hidden menu options, poor focus lock shutter sensitivity
In trying not to make a same mistake twice, I waited almost two years before making the decision to buy my second digital camera. I read all available articles I could find about all digital cameras and narrowed it down to Coolpix 950, but it did not...
Pros: memories, previewing as it happens, showing to people as you go Cons: price, taking a laptop or buying a digital wallet
Enough people have written about the benefits (and disadvantages!) of the Coolpix 990. Before saying anything else I should say that I am a (semi)serious amateur photographer rather than a professional, I mostly take landscapes (that are still) rather...
Nikon Coolpix 990
I do not recommend this product.
RED EYE TROUBLE
If you should take indoor pictures where you have to use the auto flash with the red eye reduction feature, you will be in for a big-big surprise. This...
As a professional photographer, I find this little camera somewhat limiting. However, I'd strongly recommend it to any deep pocketed consumer looking for the latest and greatest digital camera.
The Nikon Coolpix 990 camera is one of the better cameras I've ever used.It has the 3x zoom nikkor lens with 38mm to 115mm coverage for very sharp images. It has the 4896 step multi area auto focus for quick compensation and 256 element matrix metering...
Pros: GREAT picture quality Cons: Don't lose the manual, you WILL need a larger memory card and rechargable batteries
So, I've written epinions on the Kodak 265 camera and the Epson Stylus Photo 750 printer. I've been using digital cameras for 3 years now, went through the Kodak DC50, DC120, DC260 and most recently the DC265. I am mostly a hobbyist, a lifelong amateur...
Pros: Best image for under $1000 Cons: Requires thorough understanding of photography
Early adopters of any technology always pay a higher price in some way, either sacrificing cash or quality. Until this camera, digital photography simply hasn't been worth bothering with except for some photojournalists, commercial photographers (using...
Pros: fabulous picture quality, very quick operation Cons: some purple fringing, battery hog
[Update June, 2001]
After having shot more than 1000 pics, I came to respect the lens/ccd combination more and more. The details and resolution simply can't be beat by lesser cameras. There are, however, some limitations. For one thing, the white...
Pros: Blow your mind pictures Cons: Expect to spend some time if you want to learn it all.
It is clear that the Nikon tradition continues as this camera takes INCREDIBLE pictures!! The USB interface worked flawlessly with my desktop PC but failed to install on my Dell Laptop. While customer service line was no help, I am sure that the...
Nikon's 990 model is the successor to the extreamly popular 950 and has a 3.34 megapixel sensor, with a maximum image size of 2048 x 1536. The camera can take 2 frames per second at full resolution, or 40 seconds of QVGA Motion-JPEG at 15 frames per...
Pros: economy of digital with images = to film Cons: no through the lens viewing at eye piece
After being a somewhat avid photographer and believing that my Minolta 7000i was still adequate, I must admit I was wrong. My son in Alaska sent me this camera as a belated Father's Day gift. Am I pleased, ***** and more so!
First surprise THE...
I decided to go to purchase a digital camera after spending years of waiting it out than I wanted the best.
I went into the store with the intention of buying a Olympus my brother-in-law has one and it was a real simple set up.
However I was...
Pros: Great Quality, Sturdy Design Cons: AF slow, loud, battery life is so-so
The Nikon Coolpix 990 was part of the first crop of 3 Megapixel cameras released on the market. Others in the group include the Sony DSC-S70 (See my earlier review.) and the Canon S20. I've used the Sony S70 for several months now, and been very...
Pros: Great photo resolution, sharp images, good color, easy to use Cons: Battery life, Hard to see the monitor outside in sunlight
My company purchased this camera three years ago when digital cameras were first starting to come into play to the consumer. We are a small advertising agency who needed to take shots of products for our clients for flyers and catalogs. We also propped...
I am a professional web designer not a professional photographer, but this camera is one of the better cameras I've used. I will explain what I feel are the negatives and positives. You can get the specs from the
other opinions.
Pros: Excellent image quality Cons: Too big in size, awkward swivel lens
No doubt, this is one of the best consumer digital cameras that are out there. The camera features both auto and manual modes. I have mostly used the auto function-- and sure it takes exceptionally sharp pictures in different light conditions. I have...
Pros: Many features, flexible use, good pictures Cons: Dirty optical view finder, poor battery life
I got this camera for christmas. What a great gift!
It very flexible allowing two fairly automatic "modes" and a manual mode. By this I mean that there is a full automatic mode which does everything for you, plus a setting called...
Pros: Superb image quality, lots of options, fast download speeds to a PC, AUTO mode is as easy to use as a regular camera, and much more... Cons: Relatively weak built-in flash, carrying case not included
My previous digital camera was a refurbished Sony DSC-F1, which has served me very well for more than two years. I loved it for its small size and ease of use. However, its maximum resolution is 640x480...inadequate compared to today's standard. I needed...
Pros: Excellent high resolution photos with 35mm camera functions Cons: Unbearable red-eyes and broken zoom in first month
Before buying a digital camera I read reviews from many different sites. I decided to get the Coolpix 990 because of all its features and high ratings. After taking a few pictures with it using a flash, I noticed that everyone ALWAYS has red-eyes. I...
Pros: Resolution, Magnesium Body, USB Interface Cons: Small Zoom, Poor Light Collection, Short Battery Life, Type 1 CF Slot
I bought this product to replace my older Nikon camera that decided to no longer accept film. I wanted a camera that could come as close as possible to matching the resolution of 35mm film and the Nikon 990 does a good job. However I DO have a few...
My needs in a digital camera were simple, or so I thought. I take a lot of photos, 10-15 or more rolls at a time, which can get very expensive when you take into account the cost of film, developing and printing. It is also time consuming, as I scan the...
Upon realizing that the only reason I got film developed was in order to scan the prints into the computer, I realized it was time to get a Digital Camera. Most important to me in my decision was the quality of the images that could be captured by the...
Pros: High Rez, Smart Style and Features Cons: Availability of Acessories
I have the Sweet Job of Selling Digital Camera's, and it is part of my job to know how to use em, and sell em.....and this camera usually sell's itself. The Name Recognition should be enough to convince you it is a quality Product, lots of inovation...
Pros: lens swivels for desired shots, produces high quality images Cons: expensive
Nikon Coolpix 990 is an expensive camera. It has a rugged construction. The lens swivels more than 270 degrees so you can get the shot you want. It has 1048 by 1536 resolution images and has 3.3 megapixels. It produces high quality images. You can...
Pros: This camera produces some of the best prints Ive seen, great features and solid workmanship Cons: red eye with built in flash
I consider myself a fairly experienced digital photographer, having owned six digital cameras, and taking thousands of photos with them. I owned two epson's, a cannon, and three Nikon's. I have used the coolpix 700, the 800, 950 and now the 990. I have...
Pros: Image quality, Functionality, Design Cons: Battery Life, Software, User Interface, No charger
The image quality of this camera is great, and that was my primary reason for choosing it, as 3.3M Pixels was about as good as you could get, and the lens is of good quality. Also when I first took delivery of the camera, and read the instruction book, I...
Pros: Flexibility, Usability, Technology, Price, Quality Cons: Low Battery Life (turn the screen off when ever not in use to conserve battery life)
I choose the Nikon 990 due to its massive resolution ability and its super functionally. My personal and professional use of this camera has proven to me without a doubt that I made a good choice. The camera is fast and easy to use. The image quality...
I remember when my Uncle purchased this camera last year and showed it off to me. I immediately took it out and shot some macro's and other general images to try it out. He's since gotten a Canon D30 and let me buy his 990 for a great price.
Since...
Pros: Similar featuresd as 35 MM counterparts, great automatic mode-Quality, simple to use!! Cons: Expect to buy more Compact Flash storage media cards!!
I have used Nikon 35mm cameras for many years. I have also bought many point & shoot cameras. When digital point & shoot cameras exceeded three megapixels, I learned I could get sharp 8x10 prints on my inkjet printer that came close to the...
Pros: Stunning image quality, manual modes for custom shots, USB transfer, external flash capability Cons: Inadequate flash/red-eye, power consumption, relatively high price, slow response time
The CoolPix 990 is a lot of camera for a lot of money. Whether it is a good value is another question. I have been shooting 35mm as a hobbyist for the last twenty-five years, and like many others, have been checking out the digital units on the...
Pros: great camera awesome resolution, zoom. Cons: expensive, overkill for most web uses
this is the nicest camera on the market at the moment! 3x zoom, great resolution, and a lens the equivalent of a 35 millimeter! how could it be bad. my only advice is that it is a little steep in price, and if all you need a digital camera for is to post...
Pros: Excellent pictures in Auto almost every time. Cons: Flash Red-eye is a pain. I try never to use the flash. Low battery life
I have a 6 volt lead acid battery pack 4.5 AH which I carry in the case with a 4 foot cord which plugs into the battery socket. I have two batteries which last for many hours. I charge the batteries in my car with the lighter socket and 110 volt socket....
Pros: Durablity, quality of photos, easy to use. Cons: Eats batteries.
We bought this camera in June of 2000. We did have to buy a larger memory card, rechargable batteries, and the power cord but in all we're very happy with it's flexiblity. The pictures are great. And more importantly, it's withstood my toddler. Two...
Pros: Tons of features, movie mode, and very clear pictures! Cons: Must have original software CD, AC power in front, limited movie & no sound.
I've owned the Nikon Coolpix 990 for a year or so now. On the positives, it has very good picture quality. You can adjust both the quality of the picture as well as the size (so for example, you could take a 3.3 megapixel pictures at 640x480...
Pros: Very sharp! Excellent zooming, good view panel, easy to use Cons: eats batteries, flash too bright for close-ups, it's expensive!
The CoolPix is an excellent camera as far as I am concerned. The quality of the pictures that it produces are of an extremely high quality, thanks to the 3.34M pixels it can handle. With a 64Mb card in the camera, it is possible to take 999 640*480...
This camera is an excellant choice. It is one of the best in my opinion out in the market. It should cost you around one thousand dollars but is well worth it if you are looking for that digital camera that is on someone you know christmas list. I must...
Pros: Solid, dependable, well documented. Cons: Should have come with NimH batteries
After reading all I could find on dig cameras and narrowing my choice down to the Olympus 3030 and the Nikon 990 for semi-professional use, I decided on the Nikon.
I picked up the Olympus, played with it etc. Picked up the Nikon and knew instantly...
Pros: swivel body, multiple modes, ease of use in automatic mode, quality of images Cons: red-eye, poor flash range, hard to focus in low light
I take this camera everywhere. It does eat batteries if you like to look at the LCD, so I carry 4 sets of rechargeables. It's hard to get a bad photo with this camera; that's why I have almost 8000 shots filed on CD since June of 2000 when I bought it....
Pros: Small, easy to use, and takes great pics Cons: Slow download without separate drive
I used this camera this past summer on a camping trip with 25 junior high students. We used it to take pictures of the kids activities to send home via e-mail for the kids' parents. This camera worked great! I enjoyed using this digital camera so much...
Pros: Great features, if I ever get the software I paid for. Cons: Outrageously bad telephone support.
I bought a Nikon Coolpix 990 camera on June 23.
When I unpacked the camera, I noticed that some of the software that was supposed to be in the box was not there, but--in its place--was a piece of yellow paper referring the buyer to a "24...
Pros: Big Pictures, high res. Cons: eats batteries alive
We go this camera for our Nordic Team Website to take pictures at meets and so on. In the hands of someone that now knows how take pictures it becomes a very good tool.

I have been using my Nikon 990 professionally (I am an off-road magazine photographer), and this is absolutely my favorite digital camera out of a dozen that I own and use. It has produced clearer pictures, and less problems than any other brad I've used. I take it everywhere with me, and it has held up great to world of abuse - dust, banging around, etc. I have put almost 100,000 photos through this camera, and it still works as good as the day I purchased it. HIGHLY recommended.

Outstanding picture quality. Could use better battery life. Get an external CF reader to save on battery. Attachment lenses block flash area. All in All the best camera on the market.
I have owned this camera... by kbrkr_dt3000 ,Jan 30 '03
I have owned this camera for 2 years.
Cons: Swivel lens, can add telephoto and wide angle lenses, long battery life, uses compactflash, great control over aperature, shutter speed and film speed. Great Optics, Macro ability
Optically the Nikon has no rival. The picture quality at 8x10 is outstanding. The color saturation and white balance is also outstanding. Once you get the Menu settings set, you just point-and-shoot just like any other camera. You have great control over photo settings with this camera, or you can just use it like any other Point-and-shoot. The focusing is fast and the flash adequate for small venues and recharges quickly. Using Nimh batteries carries the power requirements of the camera a long time for both flash use and outdoor usage.
It's just a great camera -- I'd get it if I were you.

I love the quality of the camera and the flexibility it offers. Overcame battery drain on download by purchasing a Zio flash card reader - much like an external drive - download AND upload in a snap. Would like stronger flash for low light and outdoor night shots.
