Great Receiver on a Budget

by ir0nma1den , Apr 11 '02
Pros: Good overall sound for music, DVD's, and TV
Cons: Remote is the absolute worst
I received the Pioneer VSX-D409 and a Pioneer DVD-434 as a Christmas/birthday present from my wife in December of 2000. We had stopped in Best Buy because we got "Customer Appreciation Day" coupons in the mail and wanted to see about using them. I...

Good, but better can be bought for very little more.

by dgwright99 , Jul 27 '01
Pros: Inexpensive, good sound, lots of features
Cons: D509 is much better and barely more expensive
I bought this as part of a $300 bundle with (Pioneer)surround speakers from Costco.

Setup was easy. I used the co-ax digital input to hook up my Pioneer DV-434 DVD player which I bought at the same time.

Setup menus were all...

Home Theater System for an apartment

by navin2000 , Mar 23 '01
Pros: Best value for it's price
Cons: Little hard to operate
I brought this receiver as part of an entire home theater system from Costco for just $ 389 plus taxes in December 2000. I am very very pleased with it's performance. The model number of the entire system is HTP-209 and you can find it on the web being...

What a great deal!

by integracer , Oct 23 '00
Pros: GREAT SOUND, features, lots of features
Cons: Hard to program remote, no optical output, might be hard for some to hookup.
This receiver is great. Everyday I discover a new really cool feature. With all the options and features, and all the inputs on the back, this receiver could be a little daunting to the entree level user. The instructions are clear though and should...

Great Deal Bundled with Speakers

by guncoat , Dec 08 '00
Pros: Solid product, lots of features for a good price.
Cons: A little patience required to learn features.
I was in the market for a surround system, looking first only at a speaker system (sub with satellites). I quickly discovered that for not much more money, I could get a complete multi-media package including receiver, sub and five speakers.

Crap. Go elsewhere

by mdroc1 , Dec 19 '02
Pros: Good decoding of Dolby digital; High number of sound modes, OK remote
Cons: So many, I don't know where to start
I don't know what the rest of the reviewers are thinking. This is a pretty damn-poor amp. I want to catagorize each part separately.

POWER
It is rated at 100W x 5, by this is not a true indication. In fact, it feels more like 60W. When I...

Better than my $1900 Yamaha

by abmarsh , Jun 11 '01
Pros: Does it ALL at a price you won't believe!
Cons: Manual could be easier, but follow along at it works fine.
Five years ago I bought a Yamaha surround sound receiver amplifier for $1900. The Pioneer VSX D409 is so much better and it only cost $149.

100 watts per channel! One coaxial DTS digital 5.1 dolby and two optical inputs! Wonderful, remote...

Bring DTS into your life

by papbear , Aug 10 '01
Pros: Supports both Dolby Digital and DTS; includes a plethora of inputs, easy to operate
Cons: No S-Video input
I received this receiver as a Christmas present--and boy was Santa good to me!

I went on a trip for a couple of days, and, being the person I am, I brought the manual along with me for some reading material. So by the time I got home, setup...

Buy something else!

by jennifersean , Jan 28 '01
Pros: Good quality Dolby Ditigal and DTS surround for DVD movies, especially given the price.
Cons: Poor sound quality on "regular" CD playback. Sounds "muddy".
I saw the VSX-D409 on sale for $349 (Canadian) and I jumped at the chance to graduate from "mere" Dolby Surround sound to enter into the Dolby Digital and DTS realm. What a mistake!

While the Dolby/DTS surround re-production is surprisingly...

Awesome

by pierce13 , Jun 29 '00
Pros: power
Cons: dull
This receiver is excellant. It has given me more moments of joy listening to it than trying to figure it out. It has been very reliable to me and sounds great! The only bad thing about it is the "no s-video inputs or outputs" Other than...
