  • Citibank: Good Customer Service from a Credit Card Giant

Sep 22, 2005 by Bryan_Carey is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Personal Finance
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Lots of services and incentives; Good customer service
Cons: No rewards on this card; High interest rate if one payment is late

Summary: Credit cards are issued by all the major banks in the United States and by the majority of smaller banks, too. This type of service is very profitable, so it’s no wonder that banks are so anxious to gain approval for the issuance of credit cards. One ... read more

    Pros: None.
Cons: Dishonest; promises rewards they don't give; website nearly impossible to use; representatives contradict each other.

Summary: The most recent scam from Citibank was offering $150 cashback if people took their "Thank You" card and put at least $1000 on it in the next 3 months. I put over $2000 on it, and it has been much less than three months. This gave me 17,050 ... read more

    Rated a Helpful Review
    Pros: None
    Cons: The above.

Summary: Rather than declining a transaction that goes over the balance, they let it go through (so they can make the additional money on the transaction) and then call you at least 5 times a day, several times a week, until you pay the part of the balance that ... read more

Pros: Diamond Rewards Points - that's it.
Cons: Frequent shut downs of card due to OVER-active fraud suspicions.

Summary: I've been a Citicards customer for over 10 years and, for 8 of those years, Citicards has been a good card company.  The last two years, however, their policy with respect to early fraud warnings has changed to be overly-conservative.  As a ... read more

    Pros: none
Cons: high APR, poor customer service, won't work with you

Summary: I've been a good-standing Citibank credit card customer since 2002. I opened my card as a college student, and at the time my interest rate was around 10%. It has since been raised a few times, with no given reason. Just got a notice in the mail that ... read more

Cons: The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing.

Summary: This is a letter that I wrote to S. Larson: Dear Mr/Mrs S. Larson, I was quite bereft having read your break-up letter to me. After all, we’ve had a relationship for nearly twenty years. Admittedly, I too have been seeing the folks over ... read more

  • One of the worst cards around!

    Apr 23, 2008 by
    Rated a Helpful Review
Pros: I can't think of any. Really. They are awful.
Cons: Late fees that are huge!

Summary: Citibank is terrible. They don't have an auto-pay option for their cards and that can result in late fees if you have a busy lifestyle (as I do). The minimum fee I have been charged for being late was $39. Hello usury. Now take a guess at how late I was? ... read more

    Oct 24, 2007 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Widely accepted, nice online account access, cash rewards
Cons: Very poor customer service, time-consuming dispute process where the burden is placed on the customer

Summary: This review is based on my experiences with the Citibank Platinum Mastercard Cash Reward card. I initially signed up for this credit card since I needed a MC/Visa card since many places don't take American Express. I've now had the card for over 3 ... read more

  • Citibank treats its cardholders like parolees

    Jun 21, 2007 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Online account management (when you're not locked out of it for "security threats") is good
Cons: They treat their customers like idiots; they're more concerned with fraud protection than functionality

Summary: Citibank’s marketing their “early warning fraud alerts” as if they’re making our lives better by blocking transactions on our credit cards is insulting to its customers. I’ve been at a gas station, with no cell phone, at 3a.m. with a sleeping baby in ... read more

Pros: Fair APR's, no annual fees, low-rate balance transfer offers, rewards programs, friendly customer service.
Cons: Must abide by their repayment terms or they will raise rates and charge fees.

Summary: I have had an account with Citibank since 1996 and they have proven themselves as very fair-minded creditors. I would suggest that if you really don't need a credit card, then don't apply for one. However, if you do need one to build your credit or for ... read more
