What's Not To Like-- It's Free!!

by linda1527 , Jun 14 '00
Pros: convenience, open long hours, automated phone system
Cons: hefty overdraft fee
I was surprized when I went to write an opinion on this to find it rated highly only 33% of the time-- (this is the Minnesota TCF anyway). Why I ask. I have totally free checking here and a savings account. I've been banking here for at least 15 years...

Pros: Lots of locations and ATMS, free checking, online checking
Cons: Rude bank tellers, high overdraft fees
I have been a TCF member for about 4 or 5 years now. I started there because they had a branch down the street from my college and they had free checking. The checking has always been free and convenient for me. I like the number of locations they have...

TCF Bank: Convenience in Banking

by jzak , Apr 13 '00
Pros: Many branches, branches are in Cub Foodstores, weekend hours (including Sunday), friendly personnel
Cons: None, if you don't mind convenience and service
For the past four years, I have held several accounts at TCF Bank-Minnesota: two personal checking accounts, one small-business checking account and one savings account. I switched banks primarily because I was moving from an rural suburb of the Twin...

Pros: Free and easy
Cons: No interest; poor service
Everyone has different needs from a bank. For many, high interest rates on savings and checking accounts are important. Some consider professionalism to be the most important feature of a bank. Others like friendly staff who greet the customer with a...

TCF - Miserably failed to meet my banking needs.

by TrekBody , Oct 04 '04
Pros: Inexpensive. Good for only the very basics of checking.
Cons: Very poor/uninformed customer service. Worst online banking I have ever seen - bar none.
My wife has been a TCF customer for about 15 years, so when we moved to the twin cities 3 years ago, there was no decision who we would bank with, but now we are regretting the decision. The last month has seen error after error compounded upon by TCF ...

Not Secure

by onator123 , Jan 02 '08
Pros: Good deposit rates, convenient.
Cons: Unacceptable customer service, questionable business practices and lack of identity controls.
TCF Bank simply is not a secure place to keep your money, Period. On countless visits I have walked up to a teller, presented a personal check and have walked away with cash without ever showing ID nor entering a PIN number. This is simply unacceptable. ...

Do not use TCF

by beckty , May 24 '00
Pros: No check writing fees

BEWARE TERRIBLE at making funds available

by spam62 , Sep 17 '04
Pros: Lots of locations and open 7 days a week.
Cons: RIDICULOUS funds availability policies.
The reason TCF has so many locations and is open all the time is because they want to grab your money and wait as long as possible to let go. Unless it's a direct deposit or cash you are depositing, good luck in getting your money anytime soon. I've ...

TCF Bank Rip Off

by marybach , Sep 05 '09
Pros: Handy.
Cons: Inconsistent.  Policy gaps regarding coin machines.  No recourse for unsuspecting customers--victims of TCF's coin scheme.
We have banked with TCF in MN for many years.  The other day my husband used the coin counting machine to count $250 worth of $1 coins.  The machine jammed in the middle of the counting and the teller couldn't get it fixed.  The teller and ...

Bad Choice For Personal Banking
by pilotlgnokia ,Dec 15 '07
Pros: ATM Locations
Cons: Fees, Poor Customer Service, Con-Artist like practices
TCF is one of the worst banks I have done business with. They clear large transactions immediately and keep small transactions pending for days sometimes as much as a week at a time. I spent lots of time both online and on the phone with TCF and the only conclusion I can come up with is they do this on purpose to charge fees. On one occasion an employee hung up on me when I asked to speak with a supervisor.
Customer service is awful in branches and on the phone. I absolutely dread having to go into one of their branches to interact with the employees.
Everyone I speak with regarding TCF has horror stories, I would imagine you will find out the same thing if you ask around. I have yet to meet someone that has something good to say.
I would recommend going elsewhere. There are so many good options for banking these days and TCF Bank is not one of them.

Big mistake by bank cost me $90 so far
by makenzie ,Sep 18 '06
Pros: None
Cons: TCF makes mistakes with your account and leaves you to deal with the consequences.
I have a business and personal account. TCF printed my business account number onto my personal checks, (their mistake!)--thus we started bouncing checks on the business account. For months I have been receiving letters from businesses who tried to cash the checks initially and who are now trying to charge me service fees. TCF reversed the bank fees but for every letter I receive from a disgruntled business, I have to make a trip to my local bank to get them to write a letter asking that the fee be reversed. Also, several businesses used the automated withdrawl method and I started seeing $30 service charges on my account for these transactions. When I called TCF Bank's main number, they said the fees would be reversed. Two weeks went by with no reversed fees on my account. I called again. This time TCF said they wouldn't resolve the issue and said I would have to go to the local bank again. Yeah, I want to take another vacation day to sort this out again. Very poor customer service. This is one of many stories. I am switching banks ASAP and I suggest you all do the same.

Just Perfectly fine
by maestrofjp ,Apr 29 '04
Pros: Free checking, Lots of ATMs, Lots of Branches, Good hours
Cons: None that stand out
I've banked at TCF ever since I was a kid. I've never had any problems or concerns. I even bank all the way from Canada where I live now (I still need a USD checking account).

TCF is all about business. Don't expect them to fix any financial short-comings of your own. If you check bounces because of NSF then that is your fault. FYI, Their NSF overdraft fees are very low compared to banks in Canada (up to $75/check here). Also, Canada only has 7 major banks - so everyone in the states is lucky for all the choices.

I love the free checking at TCF. In Canada free anything at a bank is unheard of. All checking accounts up here have monthly fees from $9-$27 depending on the bank plus a per check clearing fee.

TCF is launched a new website which is a major improvement from the old one. Online banking is just fine as well.

Worst bank ever....
by tagmshandy ,Dec 21 '06
Pros: Location
Cons: Terrible customer service, online banking limited, can only make deposits at branch bank
TCF Bank is not only the worst bank I've ever been around, it's own of the worst businesses period. My local bank branch is supposed to open at 7:00 AM, but about half the time at 7:30 AM there is no one there yet. If there is someone working, it regularly takes 10-15 minutes to complete a deposit in the drive through. Deposited checks always take a full five business days to post which is deceptive because it appears that you have money in your account, but if it hasn't been the five business days they will access you with an expensive overage charge. Online banking is limited and doesn't offer many of the features available at other banks. It's not worth an iPod, VCR or whatever their current promotion is to open an account with this bank.

TCF is terrible
by prunella8 ,Aug 19 '04
Pros: Decent online banking (free with a minimum balance)
Cons: Incompetent, unhelpful, and rude service
I've had accounts with TCF since 1987. In the mid-nineties what had been a perfectly serviceable bank became absolutely terrible. The only reason I still bank with them is that it would require a lot of effort to change, and most other banks seem to generate the same kind of complaints.

My major issue with TCF is their abysmal customer service. They routinely screw up such simple things as ordering new checks, you can't get a straight answer out of anyone about what their policies are, they overcharge randomly, and are generally rude and unhelpful.

I am actively researching new banks now, having finally become completely fed up with TCF.

Can't draw funds on new TCF account for almost 2 weeks
by johnwm60007 ,Oct 11 '09
Pros: convenient locations
promo offer of free cash
Cons: unreasonable, uncommunicated funds availability for new customers
quick to charge fees and totally lacking resolution effort
In their promotional material, TCF says "Tell your friends about the confidence you have in us." So, I will.

On Sept. 28 I opened an account at the TCF branch in my local Jewel. I wanted a separate account for my business travel expenses and the location was convenient. Opened the account with a $1500 expense check I'd received from my local employer (drawn on a local bank). On October 7 (9 days after opening account: 7 business days) I do an electronic funds transfer for $1200to pay my Amex bill -- and TCF bounces it and charges me $35!

I got nothing but blank stares at my local branch and nobody had a reasonable explanation other than "sometimes it takes longer for new account deposits to clear". Well, that's not my opinion of how you treat a new customer -- and it's probably a preview of more surprises to come -- so I closed my account.

As they suggested, I will gladly "tell me friends" that they should never do business with TCF Bank!
