Pros: Has some great driving holes. Cons: Fairways need a few more years to get smoothed out and all grassed over.
The city took over this course last year and is bringing it around. There are 2 new tees and 2 new greens, better markers, even the bayou is cleaner. The layout is fantastic, never boring, never tricked-up.
On the 3rd hole through the fence you can buy a dozen balls for $5, matched by brand. Good driving range, chipping green with bunker, excellent food at the grill. Great walking course though with some elevation on the half dozen holes over the bayou. Nos. 7 and 18 tees are 'way high up, you can drive the ball into space as if you were in Colorado.
Right now the fees are reduced to $13.50 weekends ($10 weekdays, I think) but as the course heals expect that to go up. This course plays very good now and has the potential to be one of the best in Houston.
Pros: Nice layout and hole design... cheap... can buy balls for $5 per dozen. Cons: Gremlins... the line at the first tee... condition of course.
Once was one of the finest courses in all of Houston, Gus Wortham has now become a below average course. Too many new courses in the area now to even warrant a trip to the south side. Beware of gremlins. The neighborhood that surrounds the course is extremely poor... so you have numerous people (adults and children) walking through the woods on the course picking up golf balls. I once "lost" a golf ball that was lying in the middle of a fairway... turn your back, and your ball is gone. This course has a couple of holes with blind shots... you can pretty much count on losing your ball then. The folks "finding" you golf balls sell them back to the group behind you very cheap... about $5 per dozen.
