Pros: looks nice on the outside
Cons: blew fuses, cracks developed on the outside, only lasted a little over 2 years.

This was a microwave that came with our new house. On the outside the microwave looks pretty nice, but its durability is in question. We have been in our house a little over 2 years, and we have had constant problems with this microwave. It started blowing fuses, and now it started smoking and will not heat up anything. This microwave has been a constant problem. Also, the outside of the microwave started to develop cracks into the second year of owning it. I replaced the cracked plastic pieces, but I noticed that the new pieces are also cracking. I took it to a local appliance repair center, and they told me that they have had a lot of these microwaves come in with similar problems. I would steer away from this microwave.

Cons: COULD HAVE BURNED DOWN OUR HOUSE

The JVM-1630 unit was an upgrade in our new house in April 2000 and stopped working March 2005. I contacted GE and GE service came out to inspect the unit and it had burn marks inside the unit where it had over heated and could have caused a fire. The service rep would not repair because of the FIRE DANGER. GE replaced the unit with the JVM-1440 A SMALLER UNIT WITH LESS POWER at the service price of $75.00.

Microwave came from the builder. After 2 years of use, it cannot heat up anything. Magnetron tube dead. Spent $125 for the labor to replace a new tube. After 1 year, only during winter time, not using the microwave for whole night, when I opened the microwave door, the turntable will start to spin for a few sec. Scary. Don't know if the microwave signal has been spread out or not. To solve this problem, never close the microwave door for overnight in winter time.

After 2 years, the magnetron tube dead again. Cannot heat up anything. I didn't think I will try to fix it again. I'm going to buy a new one from Whirlpool. No more GE.

Cons: Can't heat over 6 minutes

This is second GE JVM 1630 we have purchased in 4 years. The first one lasted almost 3 years and this one failed to heat after 5 months. I purchased a service agreement with the second one and because it is still under warranty, GE will have to pay for the service call and the part, which is the magnetron tube. I had an extremely hard time placing a service call with GE and locating a repair service in my area. Note (I had to find the repair service.) My agreement states that after 3 service calls, I can replace my appliance or my money returned. With the luck I am having with this one, it will only be a matter of time before I can replace it and it will not be a GE.
