Pros: There are no PROS on this unit. It looks good! Doesn't work, but looks good! Cons: Dependability. Just doesn't have it.
I have had the same problem as other write ups listed here. We purchased our unit in August 2005. It is not used heavily, just my wife and I. It looks like it lasted 2 years and 6 months. Then, the magnetron blew along with a fuse. I called GE and was ...

Pros: When it worked it met my expectations. GE warranty actually exceeded my expectations. Cons: Not very reliable, I'd search for something better if I wasn't getting an inexpensive replacement.
My condo came with a JVM1640. Last year, when the microwave was a few years old, it started making bad noises and recently quit heating. It's a common story, several people in the neighboring units have had the same thing happen. Pretty much everyone ...

microwavejunk
by microwavejunk ,Aug 10 '07
Pros: Operates as easy as any other microwave. Cons: Does not last very long.
Loved this microwave until the warranty was up. Then it blew a fuse which shut everything down and cost $113.00 to repair. This repair lasted until the repair warranty was up and the same thing happened again. GE should recall/replace or stop selling these ovens. I recommend that you don't buy one and if you have already don't waste your money on repairs.

Very disappointing
by lauralou2 ,Jul 05 '06
Pros: Looks nice Cons: $250 is a lot to spend for 15 months of use.
Loved it for a year, 3 months after warranty expired, it did too. GE charges $65 to come out PLUS parts and labor and $20 more if you decide not to fix it. If I had read the reviews, I never would have bought it. It suddenly started to smell like melting plastic - electrical fire and made a loud humming noise when turned on. Used a local repairman to diagnose ($50) part was going to cost $240 to replace. Microwave cost $250. Hmmm. Needless to say, we are getting another microwave and it won't be GE!

Magnatron Blows
by hagers1 ,Oct 27 '05
Pros: When it works it does fine Cons: Not a reliable unit. GE should recall. They know it's defective.
Shortly after we purchased this model in 2000, it stopped heating. The magnatron had to be replaced. A month or two later it went out again. We asked for the unit to be replaced. We were told that there was a modification kit for that unit to keep the magnatron from going bad. It was installed. It has been replaced eight times. Now that our extended service contract has expired, it has gone out again. They want the price of a new one to repair it. Someone needs to sent GE a copy of the "Lemmon Law" statutes.

Too expensive to fix
by hayallmom ,Sep 17 '05
Pros: Heats things when it worked. Cons: Heat function broken & expensive to repair.
Many options to use. Vent fan, over range light. Defrost, plate reheat. Used many times for many different things. Reheats a great cup of coffee.
Defrost often cooks food, too.

Nothing but trouble
by jdtailot ,Dec 29 '03
Pros: When it works, it works well Cons: Too many major repairs in a short period of time.
I purchased one of these in the fall of 1999 and within a few weeks the magnatron blew. Found out there had been numerous similar problems reported just at the local appliance dealer I made the purchase from. Less than a year later I had another major problem, don't remember what exactly, which the dealer repaired at no cost. Now I have another problem. As I am writing this I am waiting for the service call. Especially considering the rocky start when I first purchased the microwave, it seems that a recall might have been in order by the manufacturer. Since the major parts were all replaced within the first year, I now have a microwave that is about three years old with still another, probably major, problem. That is unacceptable!
