Pros: Two ovens; small oven features "toasting", "warming", fast preheat; warming burner; two built-in timers Cons: Cooktop can stain and stays hot long after turned off; no utensil drawer
Once upon a time, the dishwasher leaked...a hidden leak that wasn't discovered until the subfloor needed replacing. And since the subfloor needed to be replaced, new flooring needed selecting. Wouldn't the kitchen cabinets (over 30 years old) look shabby ...
Pros: Double oven, accurate temps, self cleaning, warming center on cook top Cons: Very expensive, no drawer on the bottom - if anybody actually cares about that
Im a spur of the moment type of guy. Always have been. A few months ago I went out one day and came home with a Mercedes. I had no idea that I was buying one when I woke up that morning, it just sort of happened. My wife hates this tendency, ...
Pros: The smaller oven is more useful than you think.
2 ovens without remodeling. Cons: The stove is slow to cool.
The lower/simmer temperatures don't work well.
When we moved into our house, I settled for a single oven (it's hard to go back to one when you've had two) and there was no space for a second oven without remodeling. Then Maytag introduced the Gemini. Essentially, you trade the bottom pot/utensil...
Pros: Excellent performance
Easy to keep clean
Convenient small oven conserves energy
User friendly
Cons: Cost may not be justified unless one does a lot of cooking/one has money
I bought this product in 2002 or 2003 and am happy that I did. It was the most expensive range at the Maytag dealership and with the added price of a convection fan, the most expensive appliance I have ever bought. But, it has proven to be well worth ...
Pros: Ovens and top heat fast. Two ovens in one. Looks sharp. Cons: Convection fan requires a learning curve, more so than other convections I have owned.
Let me cut right to the chase. If you are reading these reviews to decide whether or not to buy, and you've already decided you can afford it, then quit wasting your time with further reading and go buy it. You will not be disappointed. However, if ...
Twice I have used the self cleaning for the bottom oven and both times I have had oven door lock stay locked (F9-5 error). Cost a lot of money to fix it last time so now I will have to call for service again !!!!
Update--March 07-- Tried to self clean top oven and this time (F-1 error) came up. $400 + to fix this time, now have over $700 in repairs.
Maytag know of these problems and still manufacture this range the same way. Search this Gemini Range on the web and there are many reports of the same problems, do yourself a favour and do not buy this product especially from Sear's as they offer no assistance if you are over the warranty. This is a faulty product and has nothing to do with warranty.
Pros: configuration
small oven size and capability Cons: poor reliability
long preheat time
I purchased the Gemini shortly after it came out.
I did encounter problems. The first one that was delivered did not work. The second one had to be repaired within 1 month. After that, the preheat time on the large oven was VERY LONG. I talked to Maytag several times and was told that was normal. I've never owned an oven with such a long preheat time.
Having said all that, I am looking at reviews. I am hoping those were initial release problems that have been resolved. We had to move and leave the range. I would like to buy another double oven and the set up of the Maytag far exceeds the other double ovens that I have seen. The others are nothing more than toasters...for the 2nd small oven.
I bought the gemini oven, because i thought it was one heck of a buy. Little did i realize that the outside of the oven stayed so hot. My 5 year old burned her self pretty bad on the outside. I had the oven on 500 for the self cleaning, and even after i turned it off it was incredibly hot.
good oven, bad design. Maytag's products are slowly going down hill
Pros: Two ovens at holidays is wonderful, warming and toasting features super. Cons: Panel melted when cleaning oven; top needs replacing.
We love our Gemini. We're always grateful at holidays when the heavy cooking starts. The only problem I've had was when I cleaned the top oven the second time, the heat melted my touch control panel and it had to be replaced. Even that didn't take away the usefulness of this range. I rushed the repairman through the fix and kept on cooking. We use the upper oven most. My husband loves to toast in it although we have a toaster. The large capacity of the lower oven accommodates large roasting jobs and three or four items at once when we're doing a big dinner. I would hate to go back to the single oven again. We've had lots of questions about it and always praise the Gemini and would recommend it highly.
Pros: We really like the two ovens. Mostly use the smaller one. Cons: Seems to have some built-in obsolescence; or Maytag has not done enough product testing.
We purchased the MER6772 Gemini in April 2005. Here it is the end of 2007 and the electronic controls went dead last night. This is the third time we've had a breakdown with this appliance. The first time after using the self cleaning on the small oven, the door discolored. It was under warranty and a new door was installed.
The second time, a load buzzing could be heard throughout the whole kitchen. We called Maytag service, who sent us to Best Appliance Repair in Denver. The repairman showed up at the door with the part in hand and the invoice already filled out; indicating to me that there is a known issue with a loud transformer on this appliance. That cost us about $200.
Now, we're looking at another costly charge to get the electronic control panel repaired/replaced. I am afraid that we may have a lemon; or that this product has some serious faults.
Pros: Two Ovens...PERIOD Cons: Top oven burns, bottom oven inaccurate. Excessive wear on the cooktop.
I bought this oven two years ago, mainly for the convenience of two ovens. Unfortunately this is about the only thing this product has going for it. The bottom oven works adequately, but the top oven is only good for warming. Any baking done in the top oven burns on the bottom. We have had a service technician out a couple of times to adjust the temperature of the ovens, and they still are not correct. The smooth surface cooktop is showing excessive wear after less than two years of use. The burner areas are discoloring and the texture is wearing off. When I contacted the manufacturer they said it was cosmetic and the best they could do was to offer me the new cooktop at one-half off plus tax and shipping. I would still have to have a service technician install it. Obviously Maytag does not stand behind their product!
Poor Quality , Maybe a lemon, but It will still cost me by katzap02 ,Jan 16 '07
Pros: When it worked , it was a pleasure to have two ovens. Cons: I thought I was buying reliability and quality. NOT! Maybe I got a costly lemon!
I purchased this oven in Dec. 2000. The electric element in the top oven burned out in 2003. And again Jan. 2007.The top burners are not working now,and neither is the bottom oven. It may be a circuit but it will cost me.
All repairs are costly repairs. I've never had a stove break down within 10 years ever before.
Gemini Electric Kitchen Range by frederickavon ,Oct 16 '05
Pros: Small top oven is great. Smooth cook-top is super. Cons: Expensive parts $$. Should last longer than 4 years for the price I paid.
Love it, but worried about electronic controls. After four years with no problems, all of a sudden my upper oven no longer works. Also, the two timers no longer work. I will have to purchase a new electronic clock control for about $265. That is kind of expensive I think.
Pros: Two ovens, great idea for special occasions Cons: Bad execution and appalling customer support.
Like an earlier reviewer, I've had electrical problems. The Gemini Range was delivered, I turned the stove on and it sent my electrical panel into a state of shock. First repair man (three days after delivery) got it working, but whenever I had three burners on, left front one would short, tripping breaker. Last week and at the tender age of 18 months, the burner shorted and tripped the breaker EVEN WHEN THE STOVE WAS NOT TURNED ON. Repair man said not to use the stove at all until the the offending element could be replaced. No firm date on part's arrival from Maytag. And no stove now for six days.
Also, upper oven door handle became detached on one side and needs repair. But Maytag and my retailer call this a cosmetic issue (guess I could open the oven with my finger nails?)and warranty doesn't cover. All in all, wouldn't buy this brand again. Never had problems like this with an appliance before, don't want them again. In my personal opinion, the famous Maytag repairman of old didn't die of boredom, he died from a broken part!
Serious problems from the start by no1doglover ,May 07 '06
Pros: Upper oven preheats fast, display shows the actual temp as it's heating up Cons: Burners cook on high even on the lowest setting. Maytag's customer service stinks.
Bought 7 months ago and the top didn't latch on one side and a screw was missing on the lower oven door hinge. There was no temperature that allowed for simmer.
Called Maytag and they sent a repairman out who saw nothing wrong. Called for another repairman and he said the top was warped because I had been cooking at too high a temp. (Note: burners cook at high even on lowest setting). Called for another repairman who replaced the top and jury rigged the door hinge. He replaced all regulators for the burners. There is still no temp low enough for just a simmer. All temps rapidly boil. Maytag says they won't replace the stove because the repairmen says it's fine.
Back burners are too close to the control panel. Put a pot the same size of the burners to boil on large back burner and the steam collects on the control panel.
Love the small upper oven which influenced my decision on which range to buy. Used both ovens for Thanksgiving and it was a life saver. Self cleaning works fine but drip pans are difficult to clean and chip easily.
