My worst purchase in 27 years of marriage
by tycoontype ,Dec 27 '03
Pros: High price uses little water and takes special soap is very loud bangs the wall
Cons: Would like to sell this junky excuse for a washing machine
Calypso sucks. does not clean clothes, with medium to large loads some items don't get wet they have dry spots when it completes the cycle. Also the clothes stink when they are left in the washer for a few hours like it does not get the grime out. This was an expensive unit and it does not do a good job and it takes for ever to do a load of clothes. Then when they come out dirty they have to be washed again where is the savings it should be advertised as a energy waster clothes stay dirty and very noisy. Mine is for sale for one third the price I paid! Hope I get a sucker like I was to buy it so I can buy a real machine with an agitator and adjustable water level that actually saves money and gets clothes clean!

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS CRAP
by edomanico ,Mar 19 '07
Pros: Seriously can't think of a single one. No seriously, not one!!!
Cons: Oh I could go on for hours. Just trust me and don't buy this.
This is the worst excuse for a washing machine ever. I've lost more clothes to this machine than if I had rolled in mud!!!!!!!!! My whites haven't been white since i bought it. I frequently get my clothes out of it dirtier than they were when they went in. The inside of the machine walls are covered in rust. The 'activator' came loose so grease was covering my clothes. If I wash a bathroom rug, I get an error and have to completely take the machine apart to get it to work again. Today I found a website that lists a class action lawsuit against Whirlpool and Sears for this machine. http://calypsosettlement.com/index.htm
Today I called my local Sears store and they are giving me 25% off the purchase of a new machine to try and make up for this. I wouldn't even wash my husbands work clothes in this machine and he's a plumber! It's a piece of crap!!!!!!!!!!!

Class Action Clunker
by gpbrose ,Feb 17 '05
Pros: None
Cons: poor design, leaks when pump goes, lousy service from Sears, expensive
10 months old and pump broke. Repairman told us not to wash bathmats!? Fixed and ran ONE load. Broke again. I guess we can't wash bed linens either...or socks?....this is ridiculous. They told us the second repair can't be done for another week. Not only is the machine junk, so is the service.

Recommend joining the class action against Kenmore/Whirlpool/Calypso for this inferior product. Sears appears to have no interest in accepting any responsibility at this point. I will NEVER SHOP AT SEARS AGAIN. Don't be a sucker like us. STAY AWAY from this machine.

I have a neighbor with a year old machine that has had the u-joints and pump replaced on two different occasions

I'd write more, but I'm going to go beat my wet soapy clothes on a rock....works better than the Calypso and is a lot cheaper!!!!

Class Action lawsuit against Calypso
by diamonde ,Feb 16 '05
Pros: Expensive
Cons: Doesnt work, is defective and a subject of a Class Action lawsuit
Our washer is not even a year old. Within two months of our purchasing this washer it started dumping water on the floor, causing significant floor damage. Sears first told us we should only use HE wash soap. But it kept dumping water on occasion. It also would catch clothes in the rubber seal. Now the washer has completely quit working, it will not drain and wont run at all. Sears couldnt send anyone out until almost a week later. He supposedly fixed it and told me I couldnt wash bath mats in the washer as that ruins the pump. He left, I ran one load of wash and guess what, it still doesnt work. Called Sears again, and was told they couldnt get anyone out for another week.

In doing some research, I have learned there is a Class Action Lawsuit against Sears for this very same Whirlpool Calypso. The complaints the lawsuit is based are exactly what is wrong with our washer. The webpage for the lawsuit is ALEXANDERLAW.com We have joined.

sold a bill of goods
by tellya2 ,Oct 26 '06
Pros: color, smooth lines
Cons: smelly clothes, soap stains, does clean well
This is the most useless washer I have ever owned...
Two different repairmen told me not to spend one dime on it ........said it
was a poorly designed machine and Whirlpool knows it.............."But", I said, "I love the beautiful grey color." The repairman said cut your loses and buy a new machine.....

I called Whirlpool and was treated very rudely, told them that in
one load it spilled soap all over two outfits and the soap stains
bleached the fabric. I followed all instructions and used the correct
detergent.
There should be a class-action suit against Whirlpool.

Sear Calypso Nightmare
by patriciajb ,Mar 23 '07
Pros: Low water use, Large Tub
Cons: Breaks down frequently.
My calypso washing machine broke down in April 2006. Of course parts were ordered. More parts were orders. Service techs don't show for appointments etc. Machine was fixed finally. In January of 07 machine started leaking. Parts and more parts and then wrong parts were ordered. Techs don't show for appointments. Its now late March parts are still back ordered. Water in my basement. I have taken 9 days of vacation time. Next week the tech is coming again for a new problem because the machine won't empty out. I don't qualify for a new machine under Sears "Lemon Law" because I haven't had 4 separate part failures. Sears answer is "sorry for the problems". I guess its ok for Sears to take 3 months to repair a washing machine. That is not a good business practice. I have been a loyal customer to Sears for over 20 years. NO MORE. I will never purchase anything from Sears again. No lawn mowers, no air conditioners, not even a screwdriver. My husband is active duty military and we move all around the country. Lowe's, Best Buy and Home Depot I will fill your cash registers with my money.

Death on towels
by oldmoo ,Sep 09 '05
Pros: Easy-to-clean control panel Water-efficient Chlorine bleach timer Doesn't un-balance
Cons: Stretches knits Pulls threads Noisy
I heard nothing but rave reviews from the salesman and the Web. The first one was delivered with a big crack in the tub, but I thought that could happen with any machine with a plastic tub. The second one seemed to be working just fine, doing everything pretty well.

After a few months, I discovered that my towels were becoming "hairy", even the old ones that I had laundered for years with no problems. I stopped putting bras into the dryer with towels, but that didn't help. And of course, when I went back to the store, they had never heard of the Calypso having that effect on towels. I guess I am stuck with an expensive washer that ruins my towels.

The "no lint trap" feature is a pain, too. I never realized how much lint was being generated in the wash. As the loops on the towels continue to fall out, my lint screen in my dryer fills very fast indeed.

Repairmen Will Always Be Employed As Long As Their Are Whirlpool Calypso's
by fidelis2dn ,Dec 19 '07
Pros: Stylish with a high-tec design
Cons: Expensive and very unreliable
I'm convinced it's called a "quiet operation" because it's broken most of the time! I purchased Whirlpool's Calypso washer and dryer in July, 2004. Fortunately I paid the extra $150 for the extended warranty. I'm now on a first-named basis with their recommended repairman! I've had the washer repaired 3 times and the dryer repaired a whopping 4 times! I planned to keep the set until the DAY the extended warranty expires; but, the machine is now broken for the 4th time and I'm calling it quits - extended warranty or not! I've learned the hard way, expensive with bells and whistles is not always better.

My Calypso is now a Crap-so too.
by mkonrad ,Oct 04 '06
Pros: Water saver (when it doesn't fail and make you start over)
Cons: Expensive, gets noisier the more you use it. Fails often!
Just wanted to add to the list of dissatisfied customers. My calypso worked great for about 3 years then began to experience failure codes(which you could clear, but they interrupted the cycle) and destroyed clothing and was not cleaning near as well as before. Now it finally completely bought the farm! Could fix it for around $250.00 but Why?!!

Problems with pump
by t-count ,Jan 14 '07
Pros: Came in the color we wanted.
Cons: Pump problems
We thought this machine would be cutting edge. As it turns out we are going to replace the third pump. It appears hair gets trapped in the pump and jams it.

Terrible waste of money
by shonim ,Apr 25 '05
Pros: It's pretty.
Cons: Leaks, smells, breaks down, eats your clothes...doesn't clean them.
We bought this washer with the general rule in mind that paying top dollar for something meant that you actually got a top quality product. Boy, were we wrong with the Calypso.
The machine is certainly attractive, no doubt, but looks (as we all know) can be deceiving.
Even with proper maintenance, following rules of thumb, and use of preferred products (HE detergent), the machine has never gotten my clothes as clean as the 15 year old dinosaur I used prior. I thought I'd done something wrong, to have my clothes smell like mold all the time, to come out with 'greasy' spots. The washer leaked all over the floor for no apparent reason, as though it had been too full. We've replaced the pump twice, and are awaiting our third this Wednesday. Our washer just turned 3 years old. All this, and the machine is so advanced that we have to go through Sears/Kenmore/Whirlpool directly to have it serviced...and pay top dollar once again.
In all, I have been happier with hand-me-down dinosaurs than I am with this beast.
I'd suggest anyone thinking about buying one, to think again....and again...and then buy something else.

Calypso Crap
by grangke1 ,Jan 23 '04
Pros: electronic diagnostics helpful (look inside machine)
Cons: poor reliability, poor customer service
This is a pitiful excuse for a washer unless you really like to see your repair man. This piece of junk has been broken more than it has worked. First it leaked water and they did everything they could think of including replacing the tub!! finally they found the design flaw and changed a gasket and voila no more water on the floor except when the repair man was pulling socks out of the pump. We have had three or four pumps now and numerous other calls to extricate those delicates from the machinery. Bottom line, the engineer that designed this ought to be fired for being stupid. Don't buy it!!

by texancindy ,Aug 05 '04
Pros: Nice not to have agitator in middle
Cons: DOESN'T CLEAN. I think they're dirtier than when they started b/c of lint.
Purchased October 2002. This is the biggest mistake we ever made. The clothes aren't clean. Lint is on EVERYTHING. It twists EVERYTHING. I thought I was crazy until I started reading these reviews. HOW DO WE GET IN ON THIS CLASS ACTION SUIT????

WORST MACHINE ON THE MARKET DONT BUY!!!!
by judder ,Sep 05 '04
Pros: THERE IS NOTHING GOOD TO SAY ABOUT THIS MACHINE
Cons: DON'T BELIEVE ANYTHING ABOUT THIS PRODUCT BAD NEWES
I'm in my 60's, and so sorry to have spent this much money on a machine, that does not clean, leaves soap and lint and dirt on the clothes. The dirt (even though it is pre-treated does'nt even budge) I get no help from whirlpool, and so I will have to buy another machine. My clothes are being ruined. I will never buy another product from this company again. Judy Papes
