Beware! Do your research!
by simba1025 ,Jul 12 '05
Pros: Large Capacity, I'll give it that
Cons: Doesn't wash well, moldy smell, and defective parts. Broken in 6 months.
I wish I had done my research! I'm now stuck with a $850 washing machine that will probably need repairs for a long time to come. I'm on my first service call after owning it for 6 months. It's leaking water and is giving an error message LD, which means long drain. If you do a search on Whirlpool Calypso Washer Complaints, you will find a good bit of information. Not to mention there is a MOLDY smell to my cloths. You can smell it in the washer. If you let the clothes sit in there for an hour or two, they will smell like mold. Which to me means the clothes aren't getting clean. Please remember, I've only had this washer for 6 months and I have read several other similar complaints. Just do your research.

Horrible, Horrible Product
by melissa3535 ,Jan 13 '08
Pros: Nothing to comment on!
Cons: Lemon! Sears will not stand behind their product, they've lost a customer for life!
Very Disappointed. Salesman said it's the top of the line washer, best you can get. First service call I wasn't even charged for b/c repairmen said part wasn't on right to begin with and hot/cold hoses were mixed up. Now, washer is 2 years old, Sears repairman has been out 5 times since Dec. 21, replaced pump and control panel two times each and still can't figure out what is wrong-meanwhile, I haven't had a washer for one month and three small children. No empathy from Sears, out of warranty, tough luck! Growing up, my parents always said, by from Sears, they stand behind their products, they sell the best. All I can say is Hogwash!!!

Where is the Lemon Law for consumers
by hurtjt ,Aug 06 '06
Pros: It's white.
Cons: The pump fails regularly. Major design and engineering flaws.
This washing machine seemed like a top of the line model. I bought expecting that kind of quality, however, it is anything but reliable.

Yes, my family's clothes have been ruined by stains caused by this machines design. I've had a few clothes get ripped, but I'm not sure I can pin it on the washing machine - other reviews say they've noticed that.

WHAT'S WORSE: Reliability.
I'm making my THIRD call today for a repair man to come out and replace the pump. The pump that discharges water after each cycle seems to be the #1 faulty part of this junior engineered jalopy.

Under the initial warranty, there is no charge, but off warranty, it's a high-price to pay for a high-priced tin-box that so badly designed, it should be recalled and anyone who has one should get an apology for buying a high priced doorstop.

CALL A LAWYER TODAY - there is a class action law suit in regards to the qaulity experience consumers have reported on this product.

Calypso Washer - A Piece of JUNK!
by dfwlandscaper ,Sep 21 '05
Pros: None that I can find.
Cons: Doesn't clean clothes!
What a piece of junk! And Sears isn't much better. We purchased the Sears Calypso in 2001 because it was supposed to be the best. Since then we have suffered through marked and torn clothes, error codes, problems with the machine draining. Now I'm looking at a $400.00 repair bill. There is a class action lawsuit involving Whirlpool & Sears on this product yet Sears will not even acknowledge there is a problem. This product should be off the market!

great washer so far!
by amandaandbryan ,Jul 03 '06
Pros: cool design, large capacity, lots of washing options, and water efficient.
Cons: can get a little noisy with larger loads on the spin cycle.
I have read a lot of bad reviews on the calypso washer. However, in my experience it has been great. It cleans efficiently, it's user friendly, quiet, large capacity and of course it's cool design makes it fun to use. I would recommend it to anyone. If your looking for a cheap washer, this is not the one, but it pays off in the long run with with it's ability to use less water and also requires less detergent.

One of my biggest regrets! :(
by dogoftroy ,Nov 02 '07
Pros: Really cool electronic display! WOW!
Cons: Knots in clothing, dingy whites, use bleach-get holes, wrinkled clothing.
We thought that we would pay the extra money to get this fine washing machine, but as it turns out, it was money down the tube! The electronic control has broken twice...I am finding that most of our appliances with an electronic controller fail more frequently than we would like. The clothes get twisted in knots, and we have to shake the wrinkles out before we put them in the dryer - otherwise nothing but totally wrinkled clothing. We can't use bleach....spots on all of the clothing, and the machine is so different that what we have used in the past, you can't manually apply bleach.

I wish I can trade it in for the washer I bought in 1984. :(

Whirlpool refuses to service/warranty once " model/serial # "sticker peels off
by msj51 ,Jul 01 '06
Pros: Large capacity was useful (5 kids)
Cons: Manufacturer VOIDS warranty and service once paper sticker falls off within washtub!!
Machine is three(3)years old, multiple problems w/ washing plate sucking underwear beneath plate. Tech told us to wash all small items in a garment bag!!

The electronic board has burned up (under 5 year factory warranty) and Whirlpool factory Service tech arrives and tells us that the adhesive, paper sticker with the model/serial number has deteriorated in the wet environment (stuck onto inner edge of washtub, WITHIN the washtub) and w/o it the machine's warranty is VOIDED, and the policy is to never fix it again.(Even though I have the original invoice, previous repair orders w/ numbers).

I was so shocked that I went to Brandsmart where I purchased it originally and found one, single Calypso on the floor with the paper/adhesive tag PEELING off right there in the showroom!
This is planned obsolescence: a clever, scheming manner in which to void warranties and service.
After spending $900.00, I cannot afford to replace the electronic machine control board.
I will not buy Whirlpool ever again, nor any subsidiary: Amana, Kitchenaid,Kenmore, Jenn-Air, or Maytag.

Nightmare
by km040670 ,Mar 14 '07
Pros: Looks great - loved the dark grey color.
Cons: Everything about this machine is awful - gets clothes dirtier, not cleaner.
The Calypso machine is absolutely the worst washing machine I've ever encountered. And, Sears is not interested in supporting this product nor do they care about customer satisfaction. I've experienced: unclean clothes, clothes with soapy residue, lint-y darks, and a capacity far less then what is promised. But the real treat is the mold that has now built up between the clothes basket and the machine itself. Whenever we wash a rug or comforter, large, black chunks of mold or mildew - not sure exactly what it is - end up all over the blanket and are left inside the basket. Finally, after five years, the motor has burned out and we are going back to the standard agitator model.

DO NOT BUY
by searsisawful ,Oct 19 '06
Pros: meeting a new repair man
Cons: I don't think there is anything else I need to say
Do not buy this machine. I have had it for 2 years and Sears repair comes to my house once a month. They now know myself and my dogs by name. Complaining to Sears won't get you anywhere, they have the worst customer service department on the face of the planet. These machines are under lawsuit with Whirlpool.

what a waste of investment! should not even think about buying this crappy product!!
by jayhawker97 ,Apr 18 '05
Pros: easy of use, nice clean look, free from parents-in-law :), nice color, like the presets
Cons: leaks water easily, loud, not reliable, doesn't clean very well
i agree with most of negative reviewers of this product (i.e. Calypso top load washer from Whirlpool).
after 1.5 years of heavy use (we used it almost every day), the washer started to leak water to the bin underneath it.
several months after that, our second-floor laundromat's vynil started to get mold.
the washer is easy to use, but if we had to deal with this inconvenience, we could've spent more to get a real washer!!
like the others said, the machine didn't clean stains very well, either (other than the fact that it's very loud!!).
i'd be interested in trying the front-load Duet, but i'll definitely check out what others have to say.

Do not buy this piece of junk
by dick2479 ,Aug 08 '05
Pros: Good concept if it worked
Cons: Breaks down regularly!
We have had this washer for a little more than 2 years. It is a replacement for a prior identical washer that failed after 4 months, with the water pump breaking. The new one has had a number of service calls. Only 3 weeks ago the water pump was replaced. Today it is broken down again for same, and different problems. Clothes and sheets ruined by bleach that come out from previous cycles. Sears refuses to take any corrective action. Service personnel are not helpful. Some confirm this is a piece of junk. Sales personnel confirm "higher than usual" numbers of service calls. Do not buy.

This Machine Shreds Your Towels and Stinks!
by cnowlin ,Jun 28 '06
Pros: Uses less water -- efficient
Cons: Shreds towels and stinks to high heaven!
The first load of towels I did in this machine came out all shredded, but I wasn't sure if it was the washer or dryer. Then I thought maybe it was because I bought the towels at an overstock store...but it shredded all of my terry loop towels and even some of my daughter's wash rags that have a tiny terry loop!

There is also this gross odor sometimes...like old musty clothes or the jeans you wore to the bar the night before. Stinky!

Of course we've had this machine past its warranty so there is nothing we can do but sell it and take a loss. I miss my old 2nd hand washer. Not as good looking, but who cares if it doesn't shred my towels and smell to high heaven!

Absolutely Lousy
by ecd64 ,Mar 28 '07
Pros: Very spiffy looking design
Cons: Everything to do with it's purpose of washing clothes.
I guess by now most folks have realized how bad this machine really is - is it still being sold?

It ripped apart towels, tore holes in clothes, left stains where none existed before. We finally gave the machine away to good will and frankly I feel guilty about this. Truly. We should have thrown it away. I was torn between whether it is better for someone who has no washer to have this washer rather than none. I don't think we did the right thing.

Pros: clothes came out very clean
Cons: started ruining numerous whites after 18 months of use
our experience with this machine was wonderful at first. after 18 months of use this machine started trapping clothes in the agitator which would result in gray metal streaks in the whites. We have had to throw out numerous white clothes due to the metal streaks which don't wash or bleach out. Sears recently gave us full credit on our machine towards another new machine (not a calypso). This is not a warranty issue issue but a design flaw.

Calypso Suck!
by fyee ,Nov 24 '04
Pros: None
Cons: Everything
I purchased this Whirlpool Calypso washer machine in March time frame this year(2004), not thing but problems. Most of my machine problems are same as everyone else: Do not properly wash clothes, causing staining and streaking on clothes have problems with mold, causing the machines and the clothes washed to smell of mildew tear clothes that get caught under the wash plate.
I read the article from the internet and saying the water softener may help fix or reduce these problems. So, spent $3300 to installed a water softener system in my house. The out come is the same, no improvement at all.
I called Whirlpool customer service and explain the problems to them. They are nice to sent a technician to my house to test the machine. The out come is no problem on the washer machine, but still have problems on my clothes. He simply told me it is the machine design problem. The
machine is NOT doing what they said on the advertisement.
