Four Years and I Still Love It
by northsider ,Sep 26 '06
Pros: Easy on clothes, very flexible. Cons: Hard to know how much soap to use on a small load.
I have had my Calypso from Sears since September 2002. I have read about all the problems others have run into, but they just haven't affected me. I used to do about 5 or 6 loads a week; now we are empty nesters down to about 2 or 3 loads a week. The washer gets clothes clean and helps me keep them looking new for a long time. I don't wash anything by hand -- everything goes in the washer. If I think it will snag I put it in a mesh bag. I use the gentle, normal, and "whitest whites" cycles most often, with occasional use of the "bulky items" cycle. I also use the "custom cycle" feature from time to time.

Worst washer I have every had.
by khightower ,Aug 01 '05
Pros: Looks pretty. Cons: Clothes not clean, leaks, clothes twisted and streaked.
This is a total piece of garbage. Clothes are twisted and knotted and I have ruined clothes that end up streaked. All of the soap is not removed. It is now less than one year old and sitting in my garage disconnected. I can't sell it to anyone - I have a conscience.

bad, bad, bad - don't buy!
by doug7654 ,Feb 11 '07
Pros: Easy settings, big basket, min. water use Cons: Frequent expensive repair
We've had this washer for about 3 years. It's been serviced several times. A dime in your pocket will end up in the pump requiring the service guy to come.
Now it's out of balance always. Turns out the basket has come loose - it costs $200 and the u-joint below it would cost $300 to be repaired!

Calypso Washer is not what they have you to believe!
by sherriefsc ,Jun 24 '05
Pros: Matches the dryer Cons: clothes tangle, stay dirty, breaks down
Wow I just thought it was me..I have had the machine since 2001 and it has broken down twice. Oil leak and now control panel. Clothes are dirty and dingy all the time. I have streaks on the whites and Grey in color. This was a very expensive piece of junk. I wish that I had my old machine back. Had it for years with no repairs.

Funky smell/brown gunk
by smcquillan ,Jan 25 '07
Pros: Energy efficient - unless you have to rewash your clothes! Cons: Mildew, brown gunk, fabric softener dispenser clogs
Thanks for the reviews - I feel vindicated! We bought our Calypso in August of '03 and have not had any mechanical issues yet. However, every time I go in my laundry room, I smell something funky like mildew and I now know I'm not going crazy - it's my Calypso washer! I also have a problem with brown gunk that collects up under the rim of the tub. If I don't clean it out on a regular basis, it gets on my clothes and then I have to wash them again! The only remedy - and it's short term at best - is to run the washer empty on the whitest white cycle with bleach and detergent. Additionally, I can no longer use the fabric softener dispenser because it got clogged and gunked up.
It's really annoying and frustrating!

Very disappointed!!!
by bonnie18 ,Mar 30 '08
Pros: Uses less water Cons: Too expensive
Too costly to repair
We purchased this machine 2 years ago, and paid $1000.00 at the time. Recently a Bath towel, not a small towel---get caught up underneath the rotating basket part of this machine. I've had problems ever since, 3 service calls, and $400 worth of repair parts! By the way, I am waiting for this machine to be repaired again, still doesn't work, won't fill with water. Whirlpool won't help out, none of these parts are still under warranty. I don't feel I should worry about placing items in my machine to wash them, and have them get stuck every time I wash a load! No, I do not recommend this machine!!!!

DO NOT BUY CALYPSO WASHING MACHINE
by static796 ,Jun 18 '08
Pros: NONE Cons: Buyer Beware consumers are getting RIPPED!
Clothes smelled soured had repair man out. Did not fix the issue. Couldn't afford another machine so we settled for a CHEAP washing machine. Obtained documentation for lawsuit settlement to get another washer and they tell us we do not meet the criteria. Sears has the documentation on repair and would not release it. So now we are stuck with a cheap washing machine that works almost as bad as the calypso. Why cant anyone make things right?

Bad Machine
by falcontalker ,Mar 16 '08
Pros: Nothing Cons: Just very unhappy with this product.
Don't buy this machine. It is not worth the money they are asking for it. It breaks down and never gets repaired correctly. After 5 years, it is loud, stops in the middle of a spin, and this right after the repair guy left. Three repair guys have looked at it, no one can fix it.

Highly Disappointed
by montanakellie ,Nov 01 '04
Pros: Easy to use Cons: Noisy
My Calypso is not even a year old and I hate it!! It does not clean the clothes very well, sometimes I have to wash them twice. It leaves fabric softener on the clothes and when dry, is highly visible on dark clothes. It has left rust marks on my clothes and long fade marks that are permanent.
Believe me, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS ONE!!

Beware of Repair Costs
by greginky ,Apr 22 '05
Pros: controls Cons: reliability, value
We have had our Calypso washer and dryer for a couple of years, with average performance for each. Recently, washer quit draining with (Long Drain) code. Determined that a heavy piece of yarn got sucked into the pump and jammed the impeller and also wrapped around the shaft, no way to get to it! Whirlpool in their infinite wisdom, decided to require to replace the pump with a unit requiring me to by the motor as well! Instead of $30 for a pump, I had to spend $115 for the pump and motor! Beware! I have had problems with dryer as well but will save that for another review. Research before buying a Calypso! There are other sites with more graphic details on problems!!!

Stay Away
by lessm ,Oct 18 '04
Pros: Pretty Machine Cons: Poor washing performance
We have had spots on our cloths since we got this washer. Also, as others state the cloths come out very wrinkled, whites are not clean and bright. Go with standard technology washers....sure wish we had.

died after 2 months
by nanjvp ,Jan 18 '06
Pros: no agitator fits queen size comforters Cons: died after 2 months.
I purchased a whirlpool duet and that had major problems after 3 months. It ruined all my clothes with beach stains. I returned that for a Whirlpool calypso which died after 2 months. Electrical panel kept flashing LD and water would not drain. The repairman said he would never buy a whirlpool. Also the delivery men said that whirlpool duet and calypso get returned all the time. Also top lid is rusty after only 2 months.
----UPDATE---JUST PURCHASED A BOSCH WASHER MODEL #WFMC2100 here's my review.
BUY AT LOWE'S BECAUSE THEY REALLY STAND BEHIND THEIR PRODUCTS.
BEST REVIEWS: Miele, Bosch, LG and Asko.
WORST REVIEWS: Maytag HE 3T, LG model #WM1814CW only, Whirlpool duet, Whirlpool calypso.
Frigidaire: good/bad reviews.
My king size comforter in my new Bosch washer came out beautiful. Next I did my sons king size comforter and it barely fit. It was a lot thicker so I really had to work it in.
AND MY FAVORITE The bleach option, you can use 1/2 cup, which is just right for my whites. NOTE: With whirlpool duet you can only use 1/3.
I hope this helped you because I don't want to see anybody get hurt.

landfill addition
by edmcoo ,Jan 09 '06
Pros: sleek styling, energy rating Cons: twists clothes, and stretches them out of shape, leaves spots.
This machine has destroyed so much of my wardrobe it isn't even funny. As others have mentioned, many times it makes the clothes dirtier than when they went in. For instance a dish cloth that I had used to quickly wipe off kitchen counters before washing in hot water, with bleach, and extra rinse cycle came out with coffee grounds still clinging to it. That just isn't right!!
I will replace it with a regular , water filling, top loading machine, asap.

Calypso Class Action Suit
by rageman1 ,Jun 24 '06
Pros: little soap needed, can wash a lot of clothes Cons: Knotting up of clothes,Display screen replaced, internal valves,Spin does not work correctly
My wife and I bought the Calypso washer in Jan. of 2004. For starters the LED display went out in March of 2004,then in June of the same year the internal valves had to be replaced. Then the LED screen went out again in Feb. of 2005. The repair man replaced the whole top display. Now in June of 2006 the washer flashes an error code and will not do a final spin unless extended spin button is pushed, which is an internal circuit error. This wash machine also had the problem of twisting and knotting all of your clothes up. Which in turn ruins you clothes. We have received letters from a lawyer saying there is an on going class action law suit to replace this wash machine. If you look on Whirlpool web site the Calypso is not even offered anymore. Although Best Buy and Sears will sell you one. We are getting our replaced due to the best buy lemon law requirements

DO NOT BUY
by shushpls ,Oct 07 '05
Pros: It is a very quiet machine. Cons: This machine is very harsh on your clothes.
I've had my machine for exactly 6 months. One day it just stopped working. In a matter of 7 days I had 4 service calls. A couple of times the tech got it to work. But I was only able to run 1 load before the machine stopped again. I wasted a week of my time trying to get this thing working. Whirlpool was not helpful at all even though the machine is still covered by the 1 yr warranty. Finally I contacted the place I purchased it from and they agreed to take it back. I consider myself lucky to be rid of this heartache.
