This machine is a nightmare - lint, dingy whites, stretched necks on t-shorts, torn towels, mildew smell, soap residue, rusted lid, poor service from Sears, etc. Avoid like the plague!! Do not buy this machine or anything else from Sears.

Pros: Ease of use, large load capacity, cleans cloths like wool and silk normally dry cleaned.
Cons: Recent staining of clothing.

We have had this washer for 5 years, and have loved it until now. The wool and hand wash features on it have been very cool. We paid just over $1000 for it when we bought it and expect it to last at least 10-15 years. We have just recently began experiencing the stains which appear as gray streaks and a few other unexplainable things like musty smell, and dingy whites.

We have had minimal problems with it prior to the recent months and have required minimal maintenance on it. The extended warranty is now expired, so my husband is taking it apart to identify where the problem is and see if we can correct it. I was really fed up with it and was ready to buy another one, but with what I'm reading on the internet, it seems several HE washers are having issues which may be due to the way it is being used. If we get this machine working again, I will love it again.

We plan to clean the fabric softener/bleach compartment, replace the rusty clamps with stainless steel, and replace the water supply lines.

Pros: Nothing.
Cons: Vibrates excessively.
Parts fail very quickly.
Goes out of balance very easily (for no reason).

I bought this washing, thinking that since it was top-of-the-line, and a Kenmore, a brand that I trusted, it would be a great machine for many many years. My experience with this machine and with the Sears Service department has been a nightmare. After four years of fairly reliable washing, except for frequent out of balance problems, all parts have failed. I have been without a washer for a month now. Sears has been unresponsive to requests to expedite ordering of parts (it takes them 5 days just to place the order for the parts, and then 7 to 10 days to deliver). The pump is blown, the u-joint has had to be replaced twice, hoses are failing, and the wash plate has had to be replaced but the new one still does not fit properly. I've had the repairpeople come out 5 times now and I still do not have a machine that works. I've talked to Sears' legal department and they will not honor the no-lemon law. For the price I paid for this, I'm really upset that it has only lasted for four years. I will NEVER do business with Sears/KMart again.

I am 66 years old and have owned many washers. I have owned the Whirlpool Calypso washer for almost two years and I have hated it from the first load. Because of the high cost, I have tried to make it work for my family but I am giving up and shopping for a replacement this week. The Calypso twists clothes, doesn't rinse properly, tears holes in clothes and every towel and wash cloth I own has threads pulled loose and hanging. If you are considering buying this washer, you would be very wise to choose a different model. I only wish I had read these reviews two year ago, it would have saved me from the nightmare that my Calypso has been.

Just as everyone else has written, it lasted about a year before the infamous Long Drain (Ld) codes. I've been though the entire unit - nothing blocking the drain. I installed a 2 1/4 inch hose in place of the little peice of crap hose it came with. That stopped it for a while, but only for a couple of months. Worse, the "automatic leveling" mounts (cheap plastic) broke themselves and I had to use a board to keep it level.

Whirlpool - I will never buy another appliance from you again. Your engineers should be quartered. I'm leaving this $900 washer on the curb and buying a cheap tub washer from someone else.

This washing Machine Vibrates, Leaves stains on clothes, shuts off before cycle is completed and only works on normal setting. For the money I spent I could have bought a cheaper washer and dryer set instead of a single washing machine. The calypso SUCKS. Hey somebody owes me a descent washing machine.

Yes, this machine worked efficiently for the first 2 years, now it is constantly breaking down from "uneven" load issues.
WE have spent more money on repairs than we paid for it new. I wouldn't have another Kenmore anything! Where are they importing their product from these days!

My mother encouraged me to buy this washer because she thought it was the best.Now I'm blaming her due to constant need of repairs. Even under warranty,the repairman was charging us for the cost of the pump and accusing us of machine abuse. The pump gets plug with lints, so I was told not to wash clothes with lint...and make sure I check each piece of clothes I'm washing....Ya Right!!!I believe the design is crappy.
I don't recommend this washer due to lots of headache,frustrations,cost,arguments with the repairman,and troubles.

I have owned many Whirlpool appliances in my fifty-five years and have enjoyed them all. This is why I did not hesitate to purchase the Calypso model when I needed a new set. The Calypso washer and dryer takes the prize for the worst piece of junk in history. The washer shreds towels and pulls clothes. The dryer takes a short eternity to dry even a small load. If Whirlpool knows of the problems with this set, why do they not compensate the consumer?

I've had the Calypso washer dryer set since Feb 2001. Just this weekend, I began to hear odd noises and the spin is not happening, in fact, on extended spin, it is now adding water and not spinning. Reading other reviews about pumps going out, perhaps I have just now hit that point. I am also concerned about the computerized timer. On extended spin, it comes up as 8 minutes to start. It went down to 7 and then back to 8 so I turned it off and am now researching repair options. Other than that, clothes have always come out clean although sometimes with lint in the creases.

Cons: Doesn't wash good, leaves a smell, twists clothes, streaks clothes, ruins clothes.

We bought the Whirlpool Calypso washer and dryer about 2 years ago. The dryer seems to work fine, however the washer is the worst washer we have ever had - bar none! It twists clothes, rips them, leaves stains on them and makes them smell horrible! We cannot use the washer for any of our good clothes, only good for things like shop rags, so if you only wash junk, then this is the washer for you!

I too mistakenly believed all the hype on this washer in Consumer Reports, but I read a LOT of folks did the same. I think the mistake was buying it too soon after they came out...all the reviews I read were positive back then. This thing has ruined all of my dark clothes, and since it can't rinse the HE detergent out of darks, it's fair to say all our clothes are carrying detergent. What clued me in that Whirlpool knew there was a problem was the THREE letters sent to me basically blaming consumers for causing the problems by not using HE detergent...that really ticked me off! My neighbor's Calypso broke down last night, and we are both looking to join in the class action suit if it is not too late.

At this point the word is probably already out everywhere what a piece of crap this set is!! I bought it at Sears 3 years ago and is the worst washer/dryer I've every owned. All that money for a washer that doesn't clean, leaves stains, doesn't even fully wet ribbed clothing such as sweaters. The dryer went bad last year to the tune of $600 repair (which luckily I had an extended warranty). Tomorrow I am going to buy a new washer/dryer and it will NOT be at Sears!!!!

From day one this washer has twisted almost everything put into it into a tangled mess. We must use the "extra" rinse to get soap out.

Pros: At least the digital display gives fairly accurate error codes that aid in diagnosis.
Cons: Poorly designed and engineered. The people at Whirlpool should be ashamed.

I have owned this piece of garbage for 4.5 years and have averaged 1 pump replacement a year. If you enjoy appliance service calls or wrenching in your spare time buy it, if you have better things to do with your time and money get something else.
