Kenmore Calypso wrinkles clothes and leaves soap residue
by powerday ,May 13 '05
Pros: Large capacity for washing bulky items. Cons: Calypso wrinkles clothes badly; can't iron them out. Leaves soap residue and bleach spots
My major complaint is wrinkled clothes. They get twisted in both wash and rinse cycles. Respond if you have same problem. It is a lot of money to be able to wash blankets and rugs.
It also leaves bleach spots and soap residue.

Whirlpool Calypso
by bocklee ,Feb 11 '06
Pros: none Cons: unreliable, doesn't clean well, junk
This machine is a piece of junk. I have had it only two years and the agitator stopped working and wouldn't drain. The repair person came out and told me that it would be $325 for a new motor. I paid a lot for this machine and it should have lasted years. I paid the $325 because I had so much money invested in the purchase of this machine. When it breaks again, it will be sitting by the curb.
I always recommended Whirlpool products to my friends. I will never again buy any of them again.

Another vote for worst washer ever
by tanthat ,Mar 27 '06
Pros: Looks pretty Cons: Ruins clothing, build quality non-existant. A true piece of crap.
We bought our Calypso new in 2002. It lasted two years before the main control board died to the tune of a $300 repair. In the past few months the washer has begun streaking brown stains across light colored clothing and leaving lint tracks on dark clothing. It is incredibly disappointing to realize that a washer that was so highly touted and expensive is truly a white monolith of junk. After reading some of the other horror stories about this machine it appears that Whirlpool has truly done a major disservice to it's customers. I plan on calling the law firm investigating these machines tomorrow morning.

Poor design constant replacements of seals and pumps
by hatewhirlpool ,Oct 07 '05
Pros: great place to grow mold and mildew Cons: Eats pumps, Seals wear out, Whirlpool admits Mold will grow between use
Having bought this washer in 2001 I have had to replace the pump no less than 3 times due to socks and other larger items being sucked into the pump. This was all due to the seal between their unique agitator and the drum wearing out and allowing bedsheets, jeans and yes even socks under the drum wedging inside the drum. Whirlpools answer to all this has been to take the pump mechanism and drop it from their replacement parts inventory and replace it with a far more costly combined pump and motor. Way to make more money off a lousy product. I won't be buying their products again. They have also had the nerve to send out very slick looking consumer notices telling you to leave the top of the washer open between uses because all the water does not drain and YOU WILL get MOLD growing inside. Criminal and they didn't have the decency to extend warranty

Calypso Nightmare
by dotdumdum ,Nov 25 '05
Pros: No pros. Cons: Lots - see description above!
Since we got our Calypso (after having it recommended by Consumer Reports), we have had the same problem hundreds of time since we bought it. It will start washing, then will quit sometime in the cycle and will give us error code "C1" or "CA". So when you go to put the load into the dryer, you realize that the wash cycle has not finished, that your clothes are sitting in the undrained water, and that water has leaked out of the bottom. The only thing you can do is to "Extend Spin" to drain the water, and then to re-wash without any detergent. Sometimes, though, the Extend Spin will not work and you have more flooding. We have had technicians here on four occasions. They have replaced the electronic board, the U-Joint, the Lid, and one other thing I can't remember. Two days after the technician replaced the U-Joint, we got two loads done before it gave us the "CA" and then "CI" code.
Truly awful machine. And I agree with other reviews that the clothes are not particularly clean at all. What a serious disappointment!

Just throw your nice towels in the trash now
by samphonic ,Jul 11 '06
Pros: It's advanced interface settings make choosing water temp and such kind of fun. Cons: It ruins terrycloth towels
Because if you don't, this washer will reduce them to rags in just a couple washes. The terrycloth loops get ripped from their base and become a frayed mess. And it wasn't the quality of our towels -- we had towels from several top quality name-brand manufacturers and the Calypso ruined all of them. Not worth any savings in water or energy.

not built like they use to be
by lydiakm ,Apr 18 '06
Pros: When it works its great. Cons: Doesn't take long for it to stop working great
Bought a whirlpool calypso from Lowe's about 18 months ago. I just loved it. Did everything I wanted it to do and more.
But my towels were starting to be chewed up. Thought it was my dryer, which is 12 years old. Bought a knew one and low and behold it is my wonderful Calypso. Had a tech come out and look at it. The repair will cost around $250.00. He said in a couple of years I would have to have the water pump replaced for about $300, decided to cut my losses and buy and old fashion top loader for a little more than what the repair would cost. The last old fashioned washer lasted 13 years with 1 repair costing $75.00.
I tried calling several repairmen I knew before calling Lowe's. They said they wouldn't touch the Calypso type top loader or the front loaders. Nothing but problems.

by mitchellt26 ,Sep 07 '06
Pros: the design is nice. Cons: doesn't clean, very loud
I purchased this washer a year ago and have had nothing but problems. The clothes do not get clean, It is loud and ruins the clothes. I will never purchase another whirlpool product again!!! The whirlpool customer service rep. was very rude every time I called for service. Which is quite frequently!!! My towels stink even if I was them several times.

What the heck?
by osomething ,Oct 05 '05
Pros: Cleans great! Saves me time! Cons: Have to use HE detergent
Well, I bought a Calypso way back when they first came out, revolutionary I thought.
At the time I had 5 kids living at home, not only did I do laundry less often because I could fit more in there, but the clothes came out ten times cleaner.
The sales associate did warn me not to put light clothes on a heavy cycle, like dress shirts on a heavy duty wash.
I have never had any problems with this machine. I absolutely love it!!!! It's odd because I read all of this and wonder why the heck it hasn't happened to me and I can only believe that it's a good product!

Whirlpool Calypso Loser Machine
by frostyfriend1 ,May 30 '06
Pros: What pros, it doesn't work!!!!! Cons: Save yourself time, trouble, and headaches--stay away from this machine!!!!
Our machine broke down just after one year which exceeded the one year warranty last month. We have had problems with water under the machine and ends up all over the floor. There are constant error messages on the circuit board and they don't clear away. We paid to have an authorized repair shop repair the machine, and the fee was $90 just to look at it. They said it was the drain motor and drain pump. They replaced this last month at Whirlpool's expense after we complained about this machine and the number of lawsuits against it. WELL, HERE WE GO AGAIN!!! There's water all over the floor, and we are out a washing machine. Save yourself the time and trouble and keep away from this machine. Going shopping for another brand tomorrow. Expensive machine and not worth the headache!!!!

Crapalypso Washing Machine
by msedye ,Jul 21 '09
Pros: NO pros Cons: Pump goes out every couple of years & it's very rough on clothes.
We bought this washer in 2002 and have already replaced the pump twice! It claims to be gentle on your clothes while cleaning them well but it's exactly the opposite! I don't dare put anything delicate in it because it twists everything up so badly and stretches it out. Fortunately my husband is very handy & can order parts and do the work himself but it still costs $120.00 for the pump. I will NEVER own another machine like this one! Save yourself the headaches and get something else.

Don't waste your money on this machine!
by chanatx ,Apr 11 '06
Pros: Easy to use control panel Cons: Everything else!
After reading great reviews my husband surprised me with this supposedly wonderful washer. It only took a few loads for me to decide I hated it and felt too bad to tell him.
The clothes are always twisted up and tangled no matter what size load I put in. I find items such as t-shirts with little holes in them and the neck tends to get caught and stretched around the center Wash Plate. It's not an easy machine to keep clean either. Since the machine doesn't fill up with water I keep a container of water handy to wash down the inside of lid and dispenser area. The softener dispenser gets gummed up easily. I also don't like the limited selection of HE products available.
We've not had to repair it until now almost 4 yrs after purchase but overall I would NEVER purchase this machine again.

I'm not alone in this. bad buy.
by biggerray ,Dec 16 '05
Pros: the timer lets you know how much time is left till it's done. Cons: if you don't wash every thing on maximum it probably aint commin clean.
I decided to check epinions to see if other people were having trouble with there calypso. WOW I'm not alone in this.I just folded a load of blue jeans, and the mortar stain on the knee looked dusty so I flicked it with my finger, and A dust cloud came off of it.how is that possible, I just washed them! I've been reading all the reports about smelly clothes, I have that to! I'll use 2 or 3 dryer sheets to try and get rid of the smell, but that don't work. the wrinkled clothes, I have that to! The lines and the lint on the dark clothes, I have that to! mysterious stains, yep got that to. I washed my Carhart jacket and a couple pair of pants and probably a quarter of the jacket wasn't even wet. at least mine hasn't broken down yet. I think I'm going to bite the bullet and buy A new washing machine.I'll give this machine to some poor unsuspecting niece or nephew. DON'T BUY!!

Pros: I liked the fact you could wash several things in one load. Cons: I've had so many problems. The washer will not work at all now!
I have had so many problems with my Calypso washer. The bleach dispenser leaked bleach on my clothes. The lid has rusted. We had to replace the spring, so it would Calypso. I have had problems with lint on my clothes, When it spins it sounds like a helicopter going over my house. Clothes have been stretched, especially socks!!! We had a wire from a bra get stuck in the hose.A couple of weeks ago I noticed the water would not come in when I stated the wash. Now it is not draining water from the tub.
