Another Calypso bites the dust... by batchman1956 ,Oct 09 '05
Pros: Looks good. Cons: Breaks, smells, leaks, lint, streaks in clothes, twists clothes, lid rusts.
My Whirlpool Calypso which is less than 2 years old just broke. After reading how bad this washer is (and I can concur with a lot of the postings) I have decided not to get it repaired. It makes a grinding\whirring noise instead of operating the agitator. We experienced the following issues with this washer before it broke: streaks and spots in clothes after washing, smells, lint balls, clothes twisted, lid starting to rust, slight water leak, etc. I'm having a new Whirlpool Duet front loader delivered tomorrow morning. Sort of hated to buy another Whirlpool but the duet had decent reviews, I wanted a front loader and in case Whirlpool offers $$ in the future towards another Whirlpool as part of a settlement, I'll be in a good position. I've also signed up for the class action lawsuit against Whirlpool mentioned in one of the other reviews. I've never really liked this washer due to all the above issues. Don't get one.
DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE; DON'T BUY AT SEARS by brhurley ,Oct 27 '05
Pros: It didn't explode and kill anyone. Cons: It is a financial sinkhole and aggravating customer service experience.
I bought this machine (having heard some positive reviews) about 3 years ago. I am now out over $600 in repairs, and its still not working (not good with 3 kids under 10 and lots of sports) - broken two times due to failure to drain; and then broke a few days after second repair where it would not even spin. This is the worst dog I have ever purchased. Sears is awful to deal with -- for timeliness of technician repair, to surliness of call center operations. I refuse to sink more money into this piece of garbage, and I will not be entering a Sears store again.
The Calypso will Collapse by dbaity8377 ,Jun 25 '05
Pros: Looks nice. Cons: Does not perform as specified.
I purchased this machine based on Whirlpool describing it as top of the line machine that is energy efficient and cleans even the most delicate (dry clean only) clothes. It worked for about six months then I began having problems with the pump leaking water on my floor. The pump was replaced and the machine appeared to work well for another six months. After that The machine continued to fail. I have had the pump replaced six time in four months. The sub J unit failed twice. The drain pump leaks. It shreds delicate fabrics, just pulls them into the wash drum and shreds them. Now as if that is not enough, the machine is leaking rust on my clothing. This machine cost me $1049. and in four months it has cost $2000 to repair. It now sits in my garage because it will no longer was. Do not waste your money on this machine. Currently there are thousands of consumers gathering for a class action law suit against Whirlpool/Sears for fraudulently marketing a defective product to consumers.
Pros: The color Matched my Maytag dryer. Cons: Pump plugged several times, dumps water on floor, Control computer is now brain dead.
My message to whirlpool is "If this is your best design you should fire them all!!!!!!!". My Grandmother owned 3 washers in her lifetime she died at the age of 94, what happened to the noble notion that we stand behind our product and demand quality of ourselves. This Calypso is ready for the landfill. This is truly no way to treat our environment by filling up our landfills so fast. Hang your head in shame Whirlpool.
Pros: None Cons: Absolutely the worst excuse for a washing machine!
This is the only washing machine where clothes come out dirtier than before. If you like soap stains, grease, lint then the Calypso is the perfect machine. The biggest problems are minimal water consumption and the apparent re-use of dirty water. I couldn't even fake out the water level sensor by trying to add extra water manually. What's really sad is two major companies Sears and Whirlpool will not acknowledge this product failure and assist customers with an economic replacement. We contacted Sears and requested a coupon or discount towards a new purchase, and they blew us off like the wind. For over 30 years I was a Sears Kenmore customer, but not anymore. Since the manufacturer is actually Whirlpool, I will avoid Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Roper, and their other brands. Design, quality, and customer satisfaction don't seem to be part of their corporate values.
This is a classic example of why imports such as Bosch, LG Appliances, and Miele will eventually take over the American appliance market.
Class Action by State?? by wedontwantany ,Aug 19 '05
Pros: Looks good, works great when it works right!! Cons: Seldom works right, streaks and spots clothing. Three repairs in first year.
I've been owned by a Kenmore Calypso for over a year now and, with the exception of the water leaks, have/am experiencing the same crap as everyone else. After the third repair visit I called the customer service line and told the lady (not that she could do anything at her level anyway) that I wanted the washer replaced or a rebate towards a new washer (another Kenmore even, but different model). She said she would check with her supervisor. When she called me back she said her supervisor said they ("Sears" I'm assuming) wouldn't do that. So I guess I'm stuck with this piece of $#*@ unless a class action suit gets us a settlement. My question for you, my fellow sufferers, is ... are there class action suits by state or are Alexander Hawes & Audet, LLP handling the case for everyone in the U.S.? Appreciate your feedback. The wife is seriously on me to just go buy another washer now!
JOIN THE CLASS ACTION SUITS! WORST PIECE OF JUNK EVER! by ktd445 ,Sep 17 '05
Pros: Looks good from a distance. Cons: Expensive. Faulty design. Poorly made. Extremely high repair costs. Totally unreliable.
Believed the sales hype and paid $1200 for this piece of junk. Costs over $300 to replace pump or U-joint thing. I am more fortunate than others who replaced their pump 3-4 times before throwing in the towel. Have had this machine for 4 years and 6 service calls later and hundreds of dollars thrown away. Leaves streaks on clothes, does not drain fully, electronic controls faulty, pump clogs and breaks down repeatedly, etc., etc. Purchased from Sears and have had to wait two weeks for repair/parts. Will NEVER buy from SEARS again. Will NEVER buy Whirlpool who makes junk.
Pros: Looks nice Cons: A nightmare and money bottomless pit!
We have owned Whirlpool washer & dryers for the past 25 years and have always been satisfied&...until now. The "next generation in clothes washing machine" CALYPSO Washer is JUNK. AVOID IT! We have owned it now for 2 years and have had 4 service call and have spent over $400 in repairs and it still does not work. It eats clothes and does not live up to it's claim of whiter and brighter clothes. The authorized repairman says it will need a new pump and motor assembly. WARNING: Forget all the Whirlpool hype on this piece of crap! CHECKOUT all the other complaints on the net and the CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS! If you choose to ignor this warning, make SURE you purchase an EXTENDED WARRANTY. Buyer Beware!!!
My tears washed my shirt better than this machine!!! by toomuchlaundy ,Jul 14 '05
Pros: The machine looked good from the outside but now I know looks can be deceiving! Cons: Clothes come out dingy and smelly. I had to keep rewashing same load twice.
The Whirlpool Calypso is the worst washing machine I have ever bought in my life. Never Never left my clothes clean. Always SMELLY and DINGY. The first time I washed my whites in this machine I wished at that moment that I was color blind my whites were A dingy gray color (yuck). So I quickly looked inside the machine to make sure I hadn't washed a poor elephant in with my whites and to my surprise I DID NOT (HA) some machine!! This machine finally died two years after I purchased it (Thank God). It was a HORRIFIC headache to deal with Whirlpool. The Whirlpool company gave me the runaround for almost 4 months bringing in 3 repair companies to resuscitate this stupid machine, and fortunately all three companies were not able to revive it (whew)! I finally called the manager of place of purchase and within 1 day he was able to give me a refund. I should have called him 3 months ago!!!! Learn from my experience DO NOT BUY THIS MACHINE!! OR YOU WILL BE WASHING YOUR SHIRT IN TEARS!!
Pros: None, except that it is easy to load. Cons: Poor quality, poor cleaning ability, poor warranty service
I have had my Calypso for less than a year, and it has already needed service twice! I may try to sell it and take a loss. It does not clean our clothes well, and if I use bleach, the next load I put in gets bleached too. The warranty service from Whirlpool is about the worst I've ever experienced. They said they would come during certain hours and after several phone calls to them whereby Whirlpool promised the repairman was on his way....he never showed up. He didn't show up the next day either! Glad I work for myself so I could take the time off! I don't think I'll ever buy Whirlpool again! Not only is the service received under warranty awful, but this machine's performance is not at all what I expected from all of the literature! Buyer beware!
worst product EVER MADE, terrible cleaning capability, there is none, by lanametheny ,Apr 14 '05
Pros: NONE it's a piece of junk ruining my clothes and flooring Cons: EVERYTHING IS WRONG WITH THIS MACHINE. DO NOT BUY IT. a .
THIS MACHINE SUCKS. It tears up clothing, leaks water and bleach on floor, ruining floor, stains clothing with grease marks, had to replace clothing, stops in mid cycle, doesn't rid water in well, whites are NEVER clean even with bleach. was supposed to be top of line when purchased. sears acts like there is NO problem. there are 3 class action lawsuits as of this date and hundreds of complaints and sites dedicated to this very problem. even with the HE detergent, clothes are not clean. dispensers do not dispense properly, clogs with softener, all around it is a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE machine. after spending 1200 dollars, besides repairs, and replaced clothing, and stain remover products, you'd think sears would get a CLUE. they are still selling this machine today. what water efficiency is there when you wash the same load over and over plus electricity usage and stain removers to remove the grease stains??????
DO NOT BUY THIS POORLY DESIGNED PIECE OF JUNK by drsteevo ,Nov 12 '05
Pros: Large Capacity Cons: Large Capacity (a heavy load of water to drag outside when it breaks)
We bought a Calypso washer a few years ago and it broke down after 4 months. After paying about $100 for the repairman to come out, it worked for a while, then broke again a few months later. We keep getting FL warnings every few months. I have figured out a way to fix it by dragging it outside, draining the water, taking off the plastic pump from the motor, and digging out pieces of clothing from the water pump. I paid about $1,000 for this machine in 2001, but I have to work on it every 3-4 months. I tried to buy some replacement pumps, but the web sites don't list the right one. Well, I finally had enough, it broke down again this weekend. I just bought a Maytag washer. I am paying the store $20 to haul away this worthless machine, but I considered using it for shotgun practice. I never thought I would throw away something for which I paid $1000, but I am really tired of fixing it.
I bought one in April of 2005 (around then). I didn't get to use it until August of 2005 due to occupancy on my new home. I got a new job and the house was vacant from April of 2006 until Sept of 2006. The person living there now is getting the LD error. I have a tech come out, and he basically wants $600 to fix it. I can get a new washer for that, and I plan to. I've had nothing but problems from my other whirlpool appliances too. I wont' buy them again, ever.
Anyone know if there is an additional class action suite on this? I'm not eligible for the last one.
Pros: large capacity Cons: leaks water even after water pump replacement. 4 yrs. old Not the quietest machine.
I have had several washing machines over the years and none of them have ever leaked water on the floor. This one has leaked water to the point it has come through the basement ceiling and buckled my hardwood floors
