Pros: Adequate performance when working. Cons: The least reliable product of ANY kind that I have ever owned.
Some recent reviews of this washer have been positive, so I felt the need to voice my own experience. I bought this washer due to the claims of water efficiency, since we wash a lot of small loads in our house. I thought that $999 was a lot of money, ...

Pros: Looks Nice Cons: Tears, Ruins Clothes
Spots Colored Clothes
Does not clean well perma press, normal
I moved into my new home in December 2005 and had purchased all Whirlpool Appliances. Among them, the Calypso GVW9959KQ2. I had gone by Consumers Report who rated this machine highly. I did not know that there had been a class action case against ...

Pros: Lots of great cycle options. Cons: Apparently this model has a plethora of design flaws!
We got our Calypso off Craigslist for $150. It was 'nearly brand new' hardly used. We didn't do a review search for it prior to purchase. However we've used it for about 18 months with no real complaints until this evening. Got ...

Pros: Many options, easy to use, large drum Cons: Clothes stink, whites look dingy, mold & mildew come off on clothes, price
We've had enough, the CALYPSO is HISTORY!!! The washer has never failed to complete a cycle and works great if you like dirty, dingy, smelly clothes with mildew spots all over them! We bought our washer in Nov. '03. We have not had any ...

Pros: NONE Cons: Smelly clothes, Stains, Reuses dirty water
BUYER BEWARE - TOTAL PIECE OF CRAP!!! I bought this washer under raves reviews from the salesman at Sears. Upon reading reviews AFTER I purchased it, I attempted to get another in exchange. I was again assured that all the defects were fixed. What ...

Pros: It looks really good. It was fairly easy to use when it was working. Cons: Breaks down frequently, expensive to repair, shreds towels, does not get clothes very clean.
Like so many others here have proclaimed before me, I was persuaded by the Sears salesman and his shiny copy of Consumer Reports that this was the mother of all washing machines. I too bought the matching set and was so proud of my new high tech ...

Pros: Well, it looks nice. Cons: IT DOESN'T WORK AFTER THREE YEARS! When it DID work, it washed POORLY.
Too lazy to write a full review. Here's what I cut and pasted from the problem summary I just submitted to one of the class action lawsuits against Whirlpool (Yes, I said "one of" - there are several, including one from a toxic mold legal organization!) ...

Pros: It worked fine the first year. Cons: Rusting, leaks, catches anything in the drum.
Everyone so far has spoken about Sears. I purchased my washer AND dryer; both Calypso from Lowes. Like everyone else the salesman convince me this was the best set for "heavy duty washing" like comforters, etc. He never said I could not wash bathmats in ...

Pros: None Cons: Rips and shreds
Purchased a Calypso washer and matching dryer just about 1 year ago and from day 1 every single one of my towels that I have washed have been shredded by this machine. I called whirlpool with all of the pertinent information and they said they would send ...

Pros: washes OK for the first year or so. Cons: Starts rusting away just after warranty
My wife and I purchased in 2001 and everything was fine until 2003 when rust was getting all over our clothes. The top of the machine was rusting out and needed to be replaced. The top was under warranty but all the hose clamps were not, and they are ...

Pros: In the end, none. It dies an early death. Cons: Too much money for such a short lived washer.
What makes this washer so bad is that it was so good in the beginning. DO NOT consider being one of these used!!! I researched this machine, read reviews, trusted the brand, and felt so good about the purchase. For the first 3 to 4 years it ...

Pros: It's pretty to look at. We bought it and the matching dryer in gray. Cons: Does not clean or rinse well, defective drum, pump, bleach dispenser, requires expensive soap.
Take a load of clothes down to the creek, wet them with soapy water and then pound them on a rock. That is pretty much the technology of WHIRLPOOL CALYPSO WASHING MACHINE, but your clothes will be cleaner at the creek. Very expensive, requires the ...

Pros: Large tub, holds large loads.Multi-load features. Multi-temp settings. Extended spin feature Cons: poorly constructedpoor designagitator breaks and deposits oil on clothingno longevity in the machine.
I bought the Calypso washer and Senseon dryer brand new back in 2002. I paid somewhere in the neighborhood of $1800 for the pair. I LOVED this washer/dryer combo. It did great UNTIL the circuit board went out on the washer about a year and half into ...

Bye Bye Calypso after only 5 years.
by bestdaddyo ,Feb 09 '04
Pros: When NEW: Quiet. Cleans thoroughly/gently. Looks great, especially the pewter color. Saves water/energy. Cons: Expensive. Pulls loops on towels. Mildew smell. Pump broke at 5 years.
Last machine was Maytag, 20 years old when we sold it with our house. Tried other machines while traveling, learned to appreciate the Maytag. Main drawback: the high noise level. New Maytags are poor quality, and ugly. Decided to try this Calypso action machine, and it performs well beyond my expectations. Extremely quiet. Very quick & easy to start. Clothes come out cleaner/softer than any machine I've used. Water use is reduced. It works best with the "high efficiency" detergents. Dispensers for detergent, fabric softener and bleach work perfectly. Had it for over 6 months now and still in awe of this machine. If it proves to be half as durable as my Maytag was, I'll be a customer for life. UPDATE: 8 mo.later, still working well. Reading other posts, class-action-suits,not confident for future. Downgrading review 2 stars, to not give false impression. UPDATE AGAIN: OK, 3 years and zero problems. FINAL UPDATE: At 5 years, pump dead, control panel dying. Not going to throw money at this thing because now it pulls fibers of towels and wrecks them, and because of it's reputation here on epinions. Bought new Speed Queen top load yesterday. Calypso is history.
