You get what you pay for.
by kryk411 ,Mar 05 '09
Pros: Price Cons: Reliability, Customer Service, Quality, Condition of trailers.
ABF price is far cheaper than using a moving company, renting a POD or SAM, but so is their customer service. My belongings had an estimated 2 day transit time. It turned out to be more of a 3 1/2 day transit time, to transport it 8 hours. The terms of our contract showed we had 3 days to unload our belongings once the trailer arrived. When the driver arrived with the trailer he told us it was going to be a "live" unload. Meaning he would wait for us to unload the trailer. We explained to him that he needed to leave the trailer and respect the terms of our contract. He ignored our request, parked the trailer, sat in his truck and read a newspaper. I've used a POD before and after my experience with ABF I would gladly pay double the price to rent from a company that is more reliable/customer friendly.

Use ABF U-Pack Moving for the stress free move
by acuspirit ,Dec 30 '03
Pros: Low cost, did everything they said they would do plus more. Excellent customer support. Cons: Ramps were not available in our destination location.
ABF U-Pack moved us cross country for more than half the cost and we were very happy with their service. I have been telling everyone about them. I had such a bad experience before with moving cross country and I was so afraid to do it again. It was such a pleasure working with a company that sticks to their word and gives no surprises. I would use them again and again. Thanks, Lucille Butler

cheap and hassle free moving
by limewater02 ,Dec 30 '03
Pros: 1)cheap Cons: 2)you have to pack
I moved from seattle to the bay area , california recently.
I had on the whole a good experience with abf upack movers.
1)The driver arrived with my moving truck in the specified
window of time and parked it conveniently for me.
2)Enlist some good local movers to pack your stuff
in the trailer. They must know how to pack the trailer,
economically. (I saved some space and money due to them)
3)You need two people to install the bulkhead.
In any case, when the driver come to pickup the trailer,
ask him whether the bulkhead is installed correctly or not.
4)My stuff was at the destination terminal in a couple of days. (seattle - bay area is a short distance).
They dropped off the trailer in a convenient spot.
I did my unloading at myown pace.
I recommend them very high.

Best way to go if cost is an issue
by dewayneward ,Jan 17 '05
Pros: Much cheaper than other commercial moving companies. If it breaks, you know its your fault. Cons: Showed up late each time at the Indiana location. Dispatchers lied about times.
Have moved a total of 4 times, 3 of those times with a "professional" mover. My last move, approx 1000 miles with a moving company cost 10k (4 bedroom 2700 sq ft home). The move back to the same location using ABF was just under $2k. The difference was non of my stuff was lost or broken through error and I had to u-pack and move it onto the truck myself (which is one of the reasons it is a lot cheaper).
If you are wanting to move over long distances and not overpay (and dont mind packing and loading yourself), ABF is the way to go. Also, they are a Union company, which made my father, a retired teamster very happy.
These trucks are FREIGHT trucks. Purchase and use extra padding. Lay plastic down on the floor and up above. They have been known to leak.
Also, they charge an additional $50 for a ramp at pick up and drop off locations. YOU CANT LOAD or UNLOAD without one. Look for coupons for free ramps.

Overall great experience
by wkheide ,Nov 26 '05
Pros: Price: great. Service: great. Driving: they did the driving! Trailer: ok Cons: Trailer: ok, not many tie downs, took some work to load
Very happy.
Moving from Sacramento to Kansas City. Uhaul would have taken a full truck and a trailer and would have cost over $3000 not including gas. ABF was only $2300 (I used the entire 28 foot trailer) and they did the driving!
I did need to spend about an hour with a couple of rolls of duct tape and some plastic drop cloths to close up a few holes and cover the floor to keep dirt/road grime out. I think the drive was clear (no rain). I've moved with Uhaul before - this seems about par for the course.
If you don't know how to pack/load, it might be worth it to hire a contract mover to help load - it takes some skill (I used to do this on a by-the-hour basis). I used to work for a full-service mover so I am fairly experienced. There aren't many tie-downs in the trailer so you have to load accordingly (load it tightly).

Excellent Alternative
by mcmingo ,Sep 16 '05
Pros: Very easy. Clean truck. Excellent instructions. Cons: None.
From start to finish, ABF U-Pack was a very positive experience. This is the first time I've done a major cross-country move and I was apprehensive. Very helpful, professional people starting with the the home office, the terminal managers to the drivers on each end. All questions answered promptly. Very fast once details were all in place.
Meticulous service. I would highly recommend.

great way to save money!!
by ilovelife ,Sep 22 '03
Pros: Inexpensive, reliable, did i mention inexpensive? Cons: Involves packing/lifting/loading your own furniture.
If you are on a tight budget, and don't mind the extra work of packing and loading your own stuff, then this is a great way to go!
After doing exhaustive research on the various moving options, (Full-service movers, U-Haul, freight-forwarding, U-Pack) my girlfriend and I moved from NYC to Phoenix, using ABF. I will admit, with all the scam moving companies out there, we had our trepidation, but it went great, they delivered our stuff to our new address, and not a thing was broken! (This is a possibility, since the trailers do not have suspension, so you really have to package your things with a lot of padding.) As long as you: 1)use strong boxes, 2) put strong/heavy boxes on the bottom, 3) Use plain ole common sense, then you shouldn't have a problem. Also, our driver was very helpful in suggesting how to load the boxes, and suggested to put any unprotected furniture in the middle with boxes all around. Otherwise, the inside of the truck WILL constantly rub on your furniture and damage it. All in all, a great experience that saved us thousands in expenses...

Move from California to Alabama
by byumikec ,Jan 04 '05
Pros: Fantastic. Cons: Website affiliate DAS is terrible. ABF is great.
I just used them and they were spectacular! My load arrived here when I did 3 days early. It was intact. Their dispatch were great in Folsom and Decatur.
Do not however use one of their web site affiliates Dependable Auto Shippers. My car will be 1 to 2 weeks or more late.

Move from NC to NY
by cianciolak ,Jul 06 '07
Pros: $$ saved; ABF does the driving, extra space if needed Cons: None
I wanted to thank ABF for the wonderful job you did moving me from Concord, North Carolina to Getzville, NY. The trailer was dropped off at the exact time I was told it would be; it was very clean, and the driver was extremely nice and helpful. He showed me how to set up the ramp before he left. The ramp was very sturdy and easy to use. My trailer was picked up by ABF when I called, and dropped off at my new home exactly when they said they would be dropping it off. The driver who dropped the trailer off set the ramp up for me, and also was extremely polite and friendly. Everyone who answered your phones in both Charlotte, NC and Tonawanda, NY were polite and helpful. Overall, it was an extremely good experience, and I will recommend ABF to anyone who will be moving. Thank you very much!

Great customer service; great equipment
by aekdelery ,Aug 24 '07
Pros: Helpful, friendly people; great equipment Cons: In some cities you must load the cubes at their warehouse
ABF U-Pack moving is terrific. My experience was wonderful from beginning to end. They even sent me a brochure and DVD about the entire process with helpful tips prior to my move. The many helpful, friendly people on the phone, and at both ends of my move were reassuring to a first-time mover like me. The relo-cubes are smaller and more manageable than PODS, but bigger than Door to Door's cubes, and they were easier for me to load. Two fit easily into my driveway. I could probably have fit two more, if I'd needed them. Because the cubes fit in my driveway, I didn't need to pay for a county parking permit to put them in the street. The machine that delivers/picks them up is like a state-of-the-art high tech forklift, and it keeps the cubes level--and your contents from shifting around--while they're going on and off the flatbed. Everything arrived safely. I would use ABF Upack moving again!

Excellent!!
by tkmb03 ,Dec 12 '05
Pros: Customer service, efficiency Cons: We have no complaints...
We just made a cross country move from CA to TN. We really researched moving companies and found ABF to be the most affordable. The truck we got was pretty clean, just needed a simple sweeping, and the customer service was great. They brought the truck right on time and picked it up quickly when we were done packing it. The company is easy to deal with and very responsive to questions/concerns. The driver even delivered our stuff to our new house at 9:00 at night so we wouldn't have to wait over the weekend! I would definitely recommend ABF for a worry free move!

Fantastic, inexpensive service
by popsicle38 ,Jun 30 '07
Pros: Great customer service, employees easy to get in touch with, inexpensive, door-to-door dropoff! Wonderful! Cons: Pack tightly to avoid shifting along bumpy travels.
I used the ReloCube option from ABF, which is perfect for anyone moving a one-bedroom apt. The service in both my departure city (Memphis) and my arrival city (Austin) was great. Employees were flexible, easy to get in touch with, and extremely friendly. It was such a relief to not have to drive my stuff and tow my car that far, and my stuff arrived relatively in tact. My only recommendation is to pack the cube tightly and use lots of padding to eliminate shifting. The only damage done was to pieces that I left standing without buffering them from other boxes and furniture in the cube. ABF U-Pack was a great service for a phenomenal price!

The greatest service for moving
by pmachowski ,Mar 15 '06
Pros: The trucks were clean and the drivers prompt with delivery. Cons: I haven't found anything wrong with ABF.
The service we received from the ABF U-Pack Moving was terrific. Because of re-locating circumstances as well as a time element, we needed a company that we could depend on. When they told us the truck would be there for us to load, it was there right on time ... no delays. When we called to have the truck picked up after loading, again they were right there for us. The drivers were very willing to show us how to use any equipment we needed and the truck's interior was clean and ready for our furniture. I wouldn't hesitate to call on ABF if I need to move again.

Excellent service
by sangabriel ,Apr 06 '04
Pros: Excellent customer service and timing Cons: Loading the trailer is not something everyone can do.
We chose to use ABF U-Pack because they were adept at international moves (Canada to USA). We got excellent support and many patient answers to our many questions throughout the process.
Loading the truck is definitely work, not play, but we got it done. In the future, we would ask for advice on how to load our many boxes, instead of making up our own method!
Everything went according to schedule, and the people I talked to at both ends were HUMAN, not automatons.
I highly recommend this method for its cost-effectivness and simplicity.

A great cube move with ABF May 2007
by snkja ,May 24 '07
Pros: On time, efficient, courteous, knowledgeable, helpful, smooth. Cons: None
Highly recommend. Cube arrived on time to fill in Oregon. Amazed as to what I could fit into what looked like such a small space!!! We packed it tight for limited movement. Everything got on. Arrived at destination within time stated. Easy to trace on internet. ALL people, corp office, phone people, drivers, destination dispatch were very nice, professional, and helpful. Destination terminal in Phoenix. went out of their way to deliver. No problems whatsoever. Nothing broken or messed. I followed their directions and it worked fine. I had a small move, but it was relatively painless, even for a senior citizen. After senior discount and AAA discount, I could not have done it cheaper any other way. They also have links to a great car transport company.
