5 years ago we moved into our 3 bedroom, 3 level, older brick house. 5 years later, now with 1 child, one on the way, and still 4 pets, we decided to move again - across town to a 5 bedroom, 2 level house. The first time we moved we used U-Haul, and ...

What a Great Moving Experience by lcumpire ,Sep 10 '03
Pros: On time - no extra charges - good price Cons: Have to watch the website for price changes.
I had to move my daughter from Washington, DC to New York City on August 23, 2003. What a great experience. I initially booked through U-Haul but after reading some other reviews I change to Penske.
Penske's rate was higher but after I called and told customer service that Budget had a lower rate Penske lowered their rate by $100.00. I read on other reviews that Penske often lowers their rate as you get closer so I kept watch and they lowered their rate again and again until it was $75 less than Budget and U-Haul.
I rented a 15 foot truck with only 25,000 miles and as long as I kept the speed under 70 mph the truck ran great. Their was a rattle in the cabin but we stuffed mattress pads and that helped quite a bit. I took out the accident insurance for $35.00 so when I scraped the truck on a sign post I was not charged one extra penny.
The paperwork went smoothly on both ends and the truck was waiting for use when we went to pick it up.
I would recommend Penske again for anyone wanting to move.
I went to U-Haul and waited in line for an hour. They were out of trucks even though I had a reservation. Several other people there had the same problem.
Then I contacted Penske and it was much different. Their friendly customer service man called several local Penske rentals places and public storage places to locate a 15' truck for me so that I only had to make one call.
I went to the rental place to pick up the truck and they had it reserved. When I got the keys, I made sure to tell the lady there how good their service was compared to U-Haul.
Penske for cross country moving!! 5 stars by jen_marien ,Nov 12 '04
Pros: Great prices, customer service, cleanliness, mileage, maintenance and overall external look of the truck. Cons: none
In early October 2004, my Husband and I rented a 17 foot truck from Penske's Hollywood branch (Public Storage off Beverly Blvd) for our move from Los Angeles to Colorado.
1) They allowed us to change our reservations when we realized the original 25 footer was way too big for our needs.
2) The mechanic asked us to assist him in a 'walk through' of the truck to confirm all gauges etc were working and to point out any already existing dings.
3) We never had any mechanical issues and the darn thing even had the same gas mileage as my 1994 Honda Accord (which I drove behind the truck the whole way).
4) Price was $1,000.00 less than Uhaul.
5) Truck was extremely clean and high end.
Suggestions:
- Bring plenty of cash on long trips, those tanks can cost you a lot of money in the end with these gas prices. (it cost us about $250)
- If you see an online discount on the Penske site, call them as well, they might be able to get you an even better deal!
THANKS PENSKE FOR GETTING US TO OUR NEW HOME SAFELY! :)
Pros: Maintained trucks -this is the most important i think! Cons: No CD inside only radio!
Had to move from PA to GA , me and my husband decided to get a moving company so we don't have to drive and move our stuff but after reading a lot of comments about these companys i was horrified and we quickly changed to self moving -PENSKE was the best choice,we've used it in the past and didn't have any probs,in fact we blew a tire in the middle of nowhere but we just called the guys and they send somebody to fix the tire -well we had to wait about 1.5 hrs but as i said we were in the middle of nowhere so i think that was not bad.
Anyways we decided to get PENSKE again and this time we had excellent experience -we picked up the truck in the morning ,got the AAA discount:) and everything went the way we planned it,my hubby drove the tuck with his car attached and i followed him with my car-well he said it is stressful to drive a big heavy truck with a car attached but he quickly adjusted he said.
Definitely a good experience by agleckel ,Sep 18 '04
Pros: Great value, good customer service, new and clean trucks Cons: Didn't have furniture pads or a lock for the back of the truck
I had a very positive experience in renting a 15 foot truck for a one way rental. Not only did Penske have the cheapest rate, but also unlimited mileage. Be sure to call and confirm that they have any extras you paid for (hand truck, furniture pads) a fews days ahead as they run out during college move-in times. The truck was clean, comfortable, and had less than 7,000 miles on it. And drop-off was very easy. But be sure to bring your own padlock (larger than a normal lock) to lock your possessions in the truck. I did not know that the truck did not have it's own locking mechanism and had to buy one once I picked up the truck.
Two perfect Penske experiences by realbambi ,Dec 31 '06
Pros: Safety, ease of drive, no mileage on one way rentals, solid equipment, great customer support. Cons: Public Storage p/up ... be prepared for rude and idiot staff people.
I've rented Penske trucks twice: 16 & 26 footers. As an over fifty Grandma, safety and driving ease are huge for me. Penske trucks are never more than 18 months old and they are safe, safe, safe.
There is no mileage on one way rentals and Penske was a cheaper option for me than Budget of (ew) those death trap U-Hauls.
My only complaint is that if you have to pickup or drop off at Public Storage, be prepared for a lame, rude and out to lunch staff. I have never had a good experience with Public Storage for anything.
Excellent experience, Penske worth the cost! by ltparis ,Jul 13 '05
Pros: + Professional
+ Clean and well maintained equipment
+ Hassle free Cons: - 20% (for me) more expensive than competitors
For over 5˝ years I had used U-Haul trucks to perform 5 moves (both one-way and local) and out of those I had 2 bad experiences with their equipment. Also I have always had constant issues with the pick-up locations not having my equipment ready, shoddy quality of equipment, aged and defective trucks, you name it. After doing some research I knew my next move would not be with U-Haul, and ultimately after discovering many positive reviews for Penske I gave them a try.
Bar none this was the most stress-free rental experience I have had. I actually had to do two moves in a week period (Maryland to New York (into storage) and then a local New York move). Both times the equipment was in top condition, the ride was excellent, the A/C worked quite well, the trucks were clean and well maintained. Moving is never fun, especially if you have to do it twice in a week, but the quality and professionalism of Penske certainly made the experience a lot more tolerable.
Pros: Friendly, efficient, easy pick-up and drop off, excellent truck Cons: None
After becoming annoyed by the attitude of the U-Haul agent on the phone and the fact that they wouldn't even confirm that I'd be able to pick up my truck in the morning (they won't give you the location or time until the night before!), I canceled my U-Haul reservation and rented from Penske. They were friendly and helpful. I told them exactly what time I wanted to get the truck, and it was ready and waiting for me when I got there. The truck was new, clean, and in perfect condition. Dropping off the truck was a breeze (just left the keys in a 24-drop box). I will definitely use Penske again . . . and will never use U-Haul again!
Pros: Ready on time
Price
Great service Cons: Cost $15 to rent a hand-truck
I never thought I could have a positive moving experience. Penske employees were friendly and helpful. The reservation process was easy. On the morning of our move, they had our truck parked in front of the office, full tank of gas, all ready to go. No waiting in line - my husband walked in, got the keys, and we were off. No mile-long receipts to sign or huge lines to wait in (i.e. Uhaul) I will never use Uhaul again - I'm now a Penske customer!
Pros: Excellent service, brand new truck in excellent condition, low price Cons: Don't have one to speak of.
We've used Penske a number of times. Most recently for our trek across the country. We moved from Massachusetts to Washington State. They helped us pick the size truck we needed. We did it all on-line with phone support. We had a brand new truck that was in excellent condition. They gave us packing tips and a great price. We also got a trailer for our car. We received excellent service both when we picked up the truck and dropped it off. There wasn't a single problem in between. We'd use them again in a heart beat.
Better than U-Haul or Budget by cybercop106 ,May 15 '08
Pros: Reasonable price
No mileage charges
Late model diesel
CD stereo
Drop off anytime
Cons: Remembering it was 12' tall.
Ride was a little rough (used a cushion).
In Spring we moved from MO to FL. We were nervous about driving our stuff that far. I reserved a Penske 22' truck but when I went to pick it up they had no 22 footers. The friendly counter lady at Cerrini Investments (in St Robert) wrote up the agreement for a 26' one for the same price. They were both diesels, and as it turned out we needed the extra footage!! Their trucks were in great shape, and ours was less than a year old!!
We only paid $473 for 7 days, one-way with unlimited mileage. Budget wanted $527 and Uhaul wanted over $700 for a similar rig, and they had mileage limitations!!!
I hadn't driven anything that big in years but it drove and handled terrific. The mpg sure was a lot better than the gasoline powered ratings!!
I highly recommend Penske for their reasonable rates and late model equipment!!
I decided to change from U-Haul to Penske after reading horrible reviews of U-Haul on many websites. I'm really glad I made the change. My truck was ready upon arrival, the people were helpful and friendly, it was VERY clean (detailed and smelled nice), had a CD player and A/C and very low mileage (about 10,000). It handled beautifully throughout the trip (Nashville to Chicago) and I had no problems whatsoever. I chose a 16 foot truck and was pleasantly surprised to see it took unleaded gasoline. The price was reasonable AND I had unlimited miles for my trip. I will definitely choose Penske in the future and will recommend it to others.
No problems with Penske! by ctlovelace ,Dec 02 '04
Pros: Inexpensive, easy to deal with, equipment in great shape! Cons: None.
I needed a truck to move about 3 rooms worth of stuff along with a Toyota Camri from Missouri to North Carolina (about 1,000 miles). I originally reserved a U-Haul, but then found that Penske was half the price! I got a 15' truck and a tow dolly for about $1,300. Online reservation was a snap. I called their toll-free number and made a change in the pickup day--this (surprisingly) caused no problems. Pickup here in Kansas City (Front St. location) was fast and easy. The truck had less than 25,000 miles on it, and the tow dolly was in great shape. The only problem I had was that one of the tire straps came loose during the trip (be sure to check these regularly!). Overall, my experience with Penske was fabulous!
Moved cross country with Penske! by scapoose ,Sep 10 '05
Pros: Clean and well maintained Cons: No CD Player
We moved from Connecticut to Oregon using a Penske truck. After reading reviews here, no one else was touching my stuff! If I broke my own crap, fine, but if someone else broke it...!!! But the truck was clean, in good shape, ran fine, couldn't have asked for more! It didn't have one problem. It was a 16 foot (I think) truck, packed to the gills, and it hauled up the Rockies. We were doing 75-80 in it easily! The funny part was that on the whole trip out, we counted 5 U Hauls, and 3 Budget trucks broken down on the side of the road! We did see 2 Penske trucks pulled over too, but in both cases it was because of a flat tire on the auto carrier (which we thankfully didn't have) I'll use Penske again! I just wish they would get CD players in the trucks.
Expensive, but Penske is MUCH Better Than Its Competitors by justinleiby ,Jul 31 '07
Pros: Nice trucks; helpful service; does not overbook Cons: expensive, but worth it
My wife and I recently had a terrible experience, wherein Budget Truck Rental cancelled our reservation the day of our move. Budget's assinine explanation notwithstanding, we were stuck on the last weekend in July (purportedly the busiest moving weekend of the year) and needed a truck on the fly.
We got no help from U-Haul, and then called Penkse. It was more expensive, but the Penkse Customer Service Rep gathered my information and called all of the local locations and found a truck with almost zero notice. Penske was more expensive than Budget or U-Haul, but Penske actually delivered a truck.
The truck itself was in excellent condition, and provided a safe and easy move 500 mile drive.
Note: Penske has corporate policies of 1) not allowing its locations to overbook, and 2) retiring its trucks after 80,000 miles. Both of these points differentiate Penkse from U-Haul or Budget.
Austin to Seattle - Penske made it easy by bennyd27 ,Jul 09 '05
Pros: Clean, well-maintained, NEW truck. Cons: About $150 more than U-Haul/Budget--but well worth it.
Penske may not be the cheapest rental truck company out there, but the fact they promise their trucks are 18 months old or newer and offered me unlimited miles made them the clear choice.
My truck only had 10,000 miles on it when I picked it up. The engine was still spotless as was the interior. Through the deserts of New Mexico and Arizona and the mountain crossings to get to Seattle, the 16' truck averaged 10 mpg! Granted, my load was pretty light (one bedroom of stuff) but that was still above my expectations.
Overall, I had no issues with the truck. If you are moving a long distance and want the security of knowing your truck won't break down, I insist you choose Penske. For moving a couple things across town, U-Haul might be the cheaper option.
Pros: none that I can think of Cons: broken a/c, late truck, wrong truck
The truck was a half a day late in arriving so we had to sit around for hours waiting, then we got stuck with a larger truck which amounted to several hundred dollars more in fuel. The A/C would go out every few hours - it was something in the computer. The help line gave us this ten step process to reset the computer. But it meant finding somewhere safe to pull over to restart the truck, etc.... and in the meantime enduring the heat of the SW desert without A/C. It was obvious from our phone call with the help line that this is a common problem. So why doesn't Penske pull its trucks and fix the problems??
When we would call to complain they would only offer for us to turn around and bring the truck back to be fixed - costing us fuel and time, of which we had neither thanks to their problems with giving not having our truck etc...
WHat a miserable stressful trip. Save yourself the stress and use someone else
PENSKE: Great Experience - you get what you pay for! by sbaine ,Nov 13 '07
Pros: Clean, new easy to drive, fair price! CD player! GREAT A/C. Cons: Would have been nice to have a compass!
I drove from San Diego to Denver. I had originally booked a UHaul but then started hearing some bad reviews about UHaul using old trucks for the 'one-way' rentals. I guess they don't want to maintain them. The Penske truck was about $175 more, but it was very nice, well maintained, fairly new. Dependability is worth a lot when you already have a lot going on and deadlines to meet.
Not worth the worry saving a couple hundred dollars from the low-end competitor who is known to have old trucks with lots of problems.
I would use Penske again for sure. Professional agents and quick service.
One tip: The 22' truck gets BETTER mileage than the 16'.
Tip: buy some thin cotton rope to tie up your stuff along the sides. Don't buy the tie downs -- not necessary. Tie things in rows so they don't all slide to the back everytime you brake.
problem truck - problem fixed by rclieb ,Nov 14 '04
Pros: Were very quick to make the proper restitution for this very poorly maintained truck. Cons: Rented out a truck that they later admitted was not road safe.
When we were moving our office/warehouse we rented a Penske truck... the first one must have liked Elvis as it did the "shake - rattle - and (not really) roll" - right off the lot - but as it was all they had at that time we tried it anyways ... power steering and brakes went out on a major turn on the second day ... muscle power in a fully loaded truck got us off the road... called Penske they asked us to drive the truck to them... and if they could avoid towing it - the 2 days we already had the truck would be free.... muscled it to the new warehouse - unloaded it and drove it the 10 miles to their lot... got a brand new truck.... they honored the agreement... BUT - what liability they would have had if we hit something in a truck they acknowledged did not work properly - would use them again.. but would test drive the rental first!
Pros: Great customer service, excellent equipment Cons: Drop off lot not protected, fuel gauge 1/8 tank off or siphoning is going on.
Made a move from PA to VA and rented with Penske over Uhaul and Budget based on price and other reviews. Picked up the truck and it had but 4000 miles on it. Everything worked, road great (even at 65 mph). Got expected gas mileage. All in all a stellar experiance.
Pros: Price. Clean truck. Responsive. Courteous pick up and drop off location staff. Cons: Fewer pick up and drop off locations.
Rented truck to move a family member from Florida to Wisconsin a couple of months ago. We arrived at the rental agent about the time that they were opening their doors. Went to pick up the 12' truck that had been requested to find that the 12' had not been returned, so they provided a 16' at the same price. Staff were courteous and helpful. The truck looked almost new and was clean. Picked up a few supplies and we were off to load up. The ride was smooth. The truck was responsive and easy to handle. This made getting through Atlanta at rush hour a bit less nerve-racking. Averaged about 10 to 12 mpg. No problems with the truck. Dropping the truck off at the receiving location was simple and straightforward. Had left an item in the truck behind the seat. Receiving location called and we went over to pick it up. The only downside that I could see to Penske was that there were fewer pick up and drop off locations than U-Haul. This slight inconvenience was more than offset by the $$$$$ savings.
Pros: Great people to work with, new vehicle Cons: Bad mileage
Customer service: everyone I dealt with was polite, helpful, and informative. They advised me on loading and pulling the car carrier trailer, helped me find the best available discounts, and generally made the whole process pleasant. When I left some CDs in the truck, they found my number and called me.
Prices: Much lower than Uhaul.
Vehicle: New and clean, relative easy to drive and comfortable. Mileage was terrible - even for a fully loaded 26-foot truck pulling a car. It developed a brake warning toward the end of the trip.
Pros: None Cons: Seems cheap.. but probably expensive if you aren't extremely careful about your reservation.
About a month before moving I checked Budget, Penske, and Uhaul prices and Penske was about $450 versus $900-1000 for others from St. Louis to Colorado. Of course by the time I knew the date I would be moving Penske raised their rates to within $50 of the Uhaul and Budget rates. I now learned that I could have made my reservation for any date back then and postponed it to a later date while keeping the $450 rate. At this point the word "Penske" just makes me really depressed about losing $500.
Penske RATES a horrible experience by sandy22dj ,Sep 01 '06
Pros: penske trucks are ok but service and rates was terribly high. Cons: penske was very expensive
penske trucks may in good condition but it was very very very Expensive. They quote one price one day and next day charge triple the rate. Will not offer discounts unless one asks.
How I got soaked by Penske.... Box Truck Roof Leaks by telefunkenusa ,Jan 31 '06
Pros: make sure the truck they give you is water tight. Cons: Rental truck roof leaks are a disaster and very time consuming to deal with.
Our loss was on January 27, 2006. Telefunken USA rented a Penske 16ft Diesel Box Truck from The Plainville Connecticut location. We rented this Penske to move a vintage Neve console that Sunday. We traveled to NJ to pick up the vintage sound board early that morning. After loading the truck with the console, driving 3 1/2 hours back to the South Windsor Ct. offices. It was discovered when we opened the lift gate that the Penske truck's roof was not water tight! We were forced to make a claim to cover our losses. One would think that renting a high caliber tuck via Penske would mean that your cargo would stay dry and safe.
Great experience with Penske by sandonato ,Nov 16 '05
Pros: Clean, comfortable, good price, powerful, easy Cons: Wished the maximum speed was set at 75 mph and larger fuel tank
Clean newer truck,radio-cassette player, cruise control, great mileage(7.75mpg), good power (70mph) and good service.
Went from Knoxville to NJ to Salt Lake City with 22ft truck and car hauler.
When I picked up the truck at 7am the manager noticed a soft tire on the trailer so they put a new one on. The fuel tank was full to the very top!
Fun, comfortable to drive, radio was good and seat wide enough to sleep.
Price was the best.
Pros: Accurate online quotes. All good. Cons: Not a thing.
Nine years ago I rented two trucks (a 20' and a 25') to move from Florida to New York. I check all the rates and found Penske to be the best. The trucks were great. No problems whatsoever on a long move.
Just this week I needed to move a piano and a bedroom set across the state of New York. I called various van lines companies for quotes. None of them would even call me back.
So, I decided to do it myself, and once again, Penske had the best rates. The 12" truck only had 2000 miles on it. It had dual airbags, AC, AM/FM/CD player, and was very comfortable. The people at the pick up and drop off location were great. Both places I was in and out in a matter of minutes.
Pros: NONE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cons: Too many to list!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never again will I use the Penske truck rental in 1985 bruckner blvd in the BX. For starters it's the most unorganized business i've ever seen. The front desk guy was extremely unprofessional and rude. They tell you one price, but when you receive your credit card statement it's a different story. Then you call to question the hidden charges, it's almost as if they are use to the excuses they give customers. A rental of only a couple of hours was almost $200. Overall they are the rudest and biggest scammers i've had to deal with.
Penske - N. Pleasantburg Rd. Greenville, SC - additional charges by jredd77 ,Jun 11 '09
Pros: None Cons: Dishonest, poor customer service, behind schedule, squeeze as much money out of you as possible.
Arrived on Sat. morning to find that the truck I requested was not there. I was told it was on the way from across town and should be there any minute. It finally arrived almost 2 hours late, bad start.
The next day I returned the truck approx. 1 hour late. The store was closed on Sunday, and no one told me the truck had to be back at a specific time, then I get my credit card bill and there's an additional $30 late charge! Nowhere in my contract are there any specific fees listed, they basically have access to your credit card and can charge you whatever they want. I would not recommend doing business with Penske truck rentals N. Pleasantburg Rd. in Greenville, SC.
Pros: They are nice and seams to be good at helping. Cons: They're main seller is that their trucks are better than Uhaul...
Got a job in connecticut and have lived in kansas my whole life so looked up the reviews on here and saw that penske had good ones and I got a nice AAA price reduction. First, something was wrong with the 17 foot truck so I had to go with the 22ft. This truck had over 160K MILES on it! We get more than half way to connecticut after many times of have trouble with the truck starting and the engine light comes on. Call penske and we bring it in to their shop. Wait for 3 hours for them to fix it but they bought us lunch :) Get on down the road, and continue to keep have problems with it starting. Make it to connecticut and unload the truck and of course it doesn't start. They send someone out to fix it who gets it working and the guys leaves and ofcourse it doesn't start working for us. Call them back the next day and they come tow the truck! SO MUCH FOR HAVING BETTER TRUCKS.
