DROP U-HAUL AND GO BUDGET
by areis ,Apr 28 '04
Pros: NONE WHATSOEVER. Cons: OLD TRUCKS
HORRID CUSTOMER SERVICE
SMALLER TRUCKS FOR THE FOOTAGE A 17' = 14' BUDGET
Their customer services is terrible. I read the review from other people talking about the lies of U-Haul and that's exactly my experience. They lie, they transfer you all over and you get a terrible attitude from the reps. I'm going with Budget.

UHaul=Terrible
by mharrison00 ,Jun 28 '07
Pros: They have a good policy on boxes (they are willing to buy them back). Cons: Awful customer service.
Just had a terrible experience with UHaul. My "confirmed" reservation also turned out to be a sham. I could choose from a truck located 2 hours away from my home, or no truck at all. Luckily Budget Truck Rental saved me; they had an even larger truck available for virtually the same price at a location 5 miles away... one day in advance! Evidently both Budget and Penske will guarantee you a truck at a particular location at a particular time. UHaul will NOT! UHaul has a great brand name so I expected good service, unfortunately they don't even come close to living up to expectations. Steer clear of UHaul!

Truck with no emergency brake and no Park gear!
by vmspro ,Jan 13 '05
Pros: They're the biggest and they're everywhere Cons: Their service and the quality and safety of their vehicles has deteriorated horribly.
I rented a 25 foot GMC truck to move from Seattle to southern Oregon (I had reserved an 18' truck which they then didn't have but that's another horror story). The short version of this story is that the emergency brake on this truck did not work nor did the Park gear. I found this out after loading the truck and stopping at some friends house who lived on a hill. I put the truck in Park and put the emergency brake on but when I took my foot off the truck it kept rolling! I found a flat place to park after that.
When I dropped the truck off at UHaul one of the workers told me the same thing happened to him when a customer returned one of these 25' GMC's. He parked it behind their facility and then went inside. When he came out later the truck had rolled into a fence which saved it from hitting the building.
In short, UHaul is renting unsafe vehicles.

Check out your U-haul before you drive it down the road
by pjimprov ,Dec 31 '04
Pros: Location and price matching, repairs on the road done within a few hours. Cons: Very poorly maintained trucks
07-04
The location is close and they matched the lower Penske price.
I have used U-haul approx 15-20 X in the last year as I need to rent trucks for my business and they are close.
I have found that in order to get a good truck I have to review several trucks and inspect them for problems such as leaking anti freeze, oil leaks and diesel fuel leaks.
If you look in the side pocket you will find the maintenance records for the truck.
If it is an older truck try to get one that has had the engine rebuilt.
Stay away from the diesel trucks!!!
The 26 ft diesel truck I used in August blew up about 150 miles from my destination .
Most of the older diesel I have rented have had a severe lack of power .
U-haul was good enough to get someone out and gave me a much nicer newer truck to finish my run.

If you want to get ripped off... Go U-Haul!!!
by i_am_here ,Oct 08 '05
Pros: Are there any? Cons: Poor Truck Condition, poor brakes... Worst Worst Worst!!!
Today (10/08/05)I rented this U-Haul Truck with Mileage Reading at 220847.3 from Old Bridge. My home is 3 miles (maximum!!!) from there. I had to pick up a dining table from my relatives, on the way-home which is exactly on the same route to my home. It might have added up at the most 1 more mile to this. Now after unloading my dining table, I went back to U-haul and asked the Customer Service to check if everything is ok. The girl came back from truck and told me its 37 Miles...Ending Miles 220883. Isn't it too much!!! Also, I returned the truck within 2 hours. I checked it myself that it is just 5 miles one way... But she did not believe.. and I ended up paying for 37 miles (i.e. 37 x $ 2.49) After i left from there these guys were making fun of me and i could see that bcoz i had left my umbrella in their office and looking at me they were embaressed. BE CAREFUL with U-Haul... If you want to get ripped off.. Go U-Haul!!!

I should have listened to the warnings
by jaimemac ,Oct 24 '07
Pros: inexpensive, lots of locations Cons: dangerous truck conditions, bad customer service
My uhaul rental was a horrific experience. The truck was in terrible, even dangerous condition, and the customer service was absolutely no help in resolving any of my issues.
I'll go to Budget Truck next time!

Renter Beware
by srhnlsn ,Feb 27 '09
Pros: There is nothing good I can say about UHaul. Cons: Everything. Terrible customer service, terrible company, terrible trailer.
I needed to rent a pull behind trailer from Uhaul, because it was the only service available in Cedar Falls IA. I had called four weeks before I needed it to reserve it. Due to the flooding in that part of the state, I was concerned about getting the size that I needed. I gave them my credit card number, and they guaranteed me the size would be there. The day before I needed to pick it up to return home, they left me a text message saying I needed to drive to Iowa Falls, 110 miles one direction to pick up my trailer. This is completely unreasonable. We called everywhere and everyone in order to try to work something out. They wouldn't work with us at all. The "guarantee" was apparently only for the price, not the trailer. By the way, the price HAD NOT increased at all in the three weeks.
TERRIBLE customer service. TERRIBLE company. Would NEVER use again.

U-HAUL - Great experience
by jdtx ,Jan 19 '06
Pros: Good equipment - good service. Cons: None
Just helped family member move from San Antonio, Texas to
Northern Calif.
Rented a 17' van and towed a 4-wheel trailer with a 2001
Mustang on it.
We had NO problems with the van or trailer.
U-HAUL at both the San Antonio,Texas and Dublin, Calif. location were very professional.
U-HAUL now my choice for moving.
$700 includes insurance on van.

Terrible
by bailey12345 ,May 29 '09
Pros: U-Haul has a lot of locations, which I suppose makes it easy Cons: -Poor costumer service -Poor equipment
DO NOT RENT FROM U-HAUL!! I had nothing but problems with them. The truck that I rented was unsafe and unreliable!! The worst part is they refused to give me a refund. They actually had the nerve to offer me V.I.P. credits for another piece of their equipment on my next move. The worst move that I have ever had because of U-Haul. Their motto is "We Make Moving Easier," yeah right!!

Barely one step above thieves and con artists
by johnmb ,Aug 12 '08
Pros: They promise the world Cons: Cheap prices matched by non-existent equipment. Lousy customer service.
I too was promised a truck and trailer (via a "confirmed reservation" ) and drove two hours to fetch it, only to find that no equipment existed. To make a long story short, I incurred about a 3 hour delay (on a two hour move) finding another truck and trailer, and to this day am out over $100 above my "guaranteed" price. Complaining has resulted in zero progress. I have contested the charge on my credit card and am awaiting their response. I contacted the Charlotte regional office, talked with several people who seemed unsurprised and unconcerned about my issue, and never returned my call.
I will never, EVER rent from Uhaul again. I am in North Carolina and am not sure there's actually anyone with a brain working in the Charlotte regional office. NEVER RENT FROM UHAUL! There's a number of very attractive alternatives to Uhaul...RYDER has done me well in the past. I would strongly recommend avoiding Uhaul and the problems you'll most assuredly encounter.

U-Haul Should Be Renamed, "U-Do-Everything!"
by mhb1954 ,Aug 13 '06
Pros: The truck managed to make it to our destination Cons: Uncaring customer service, no thoughtfulness to be found. Not one iota.
I rented a truck from U-Haul for a move. I didn't realize what it meant when they do not confirm availability of the equipment until the night before. When U-Haul told us they could only offer us an autotransport (to tow a car behind the rental truck) if we picked it up in a city one hour away and NOT on our route, I started making calls. I found one on our route, but it was too much trouble to pick up the trailer, so we shipped a car (costing us an additional $500). U-Haul wouldn't even offer to separate the reservations (pick up truck one day, trailer the next) for us to enable us to pick up the trailer the day of our trip! We either had to obtain both pieces (truck and trailer) on the same day or only take the truck... how ridiculous! I couldn't even get the agent to look in cities that were somewhat on our intended travel route. I will never again use U-Haul. It should be called U-Do-Everything, including finding equipment. Thanks, Mark

Beware! U-haul will screw U, too...
by carolyn773 ,May 24 '04
Pros: I have nothing positive to say about my experience with U-Haul. Cons: Trucks that constantly break down, & RUDE, dismissive, argumentative "customer service" agents.
I had to move a few large pieces of furniture recently, so I rented a truck for a quick one-way, one-day (10 mile) move... In that short distance, the truck actually managed to break down TWICE!
AS a result, we sat around on the side of the road for a combined 4 hours waiting for 'mechanics' to show up.. What should have been less than a ONE hour trip instead took nearly FIVE hours! Not only was this a major waste of my time - I was paying movers by the hour, so these
"breakdowns" cost me an extra $200!
And what did U-Haul do to compensate me for the headaches/lost time/lost cash their piece-of-cra* truck caused me? Nothing. I received NO apology, NO credit, NO refund - absolutely nothing but RUDE "customer service" agents implying I was ignorant for having expected the truck to RUN in the first place! Clearly, trucks that break down REPEATEDLY are just "par for the course" at U-Haul...
I don't care HOW much I have to pay next time - I will NEVER, EVER rent from this lousy company again.

Terrible experience
by mbumstead ,Jul 21 '05
Pros: It was cheap. Cons: Poor costumer service, bad attitudes, employees lack knowledge of how the company works, and overcharged.
UHAUL made our moving experience much harder than it needed to be. Because each UHAUL is independently run, there was a huge lack of communication between centers and between UHAUL and us. They refused to guarantee a pick up time and never gave us the 24hr advance call. When we called to pick up the van there was general confusion on their part and we were told if we didn't pick up the truck in 30 minutes we'd lose the reservation (we were in traffic 45 minutes away). We were overcharged $120 dollars which we are now disputing. Overall we ran into many bad attitudes, poor costumer service and the staff was lacking basic knowledge about their services. I will never go to UHAUL again. By the way, to dispute is just as aggravating.

U-Scam
by kondapoga ,Jun 29 '06
Pros: Low price on trailers Cons: Con Artists
I recently rented a trailer at the U-Haul in South Reno. The trailer they hooked up to my car had graffiti on the side. I questioned the employee and he stated that they all get like this, and that is was ok to take it. Well, it wasn't ok, A week after I returned the trailer I was charged $200 for "cleaning". I went down to the rental location and was told that they would never rent out a trailer with graffiti and I would have to pay for it. I asked the General Manager to ask the guy who hooked it up to my car and he said he didn't have to, he was the GM and what he says goes. I was then asked to leave the premises. A court case is pending.
