  • I love the taste of the coffee from this machine!

    Mar 9, 2003 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Tastes like French Press Coffee, Brews quite fast, Looks cool
Cons: A bit of a pain to clean, Plastic finish may scratch

Summary: The Bodum Electric Santos makes coffee in about half the time of an ordinary drip machine and yet the coffee tastes much better. This coffee maker uses the vacuum method of coffee brewing. In the past this was method was limited to complex ... read more

  • Bodum Santos Coffee Pot

    Nov 23, 2007 by

Pros: Pros: Amazing coffee and it's fun to watch. You cannot make better coffee at home!
Cons: Cons: Difficulty cleaning, relatively short life span.

Summary: Needless to say we love the Bodum Santos. It really does make the absolute best cup of coffee I've found using any type of electric pot. It does take alot of coffee, but it's worth it. We are on our fourth (that I can recall) Bodum. The first was the ... read more

  • Bad Product...Bad Company

    Not yet rated.
Pros: Intersting to watch the coffee brew
Cons: Product defective from start...poor customer service

Summary: I got a Santos in February 2007. Within a month or two, after completing the brew cycle, the heating element began to trigger spontaneously and boil the coffee. This would almost always result in the coffee spilling over to the kitchen counter. This ... read more

  • Delicious Coffee, Lousy Coffee maker

    Aug 12, 2007 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Makes terrific coffee during it's short life Fast Interesting to watch
Cons: Uses more coffee than a drip machine. Electronic unit doomed to failure.

Summary: I'll make this short and sweet. I've had 2 Bodum Santos electric coffee makers. Both made great coffee (although they do use a lot of grounds unless you modify the vacuum tube. Which we did not do) and while they're a little more work to clean it was ... read more

  • Great design, poor execution

    Feb 5, 2006 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Attractive, fun to watch, makes flavorful coffee
Cons: Unreliable, uses lots of coffee, somewhat a pain to clean

Summary: My Bodum came to me as a Christmas gift some years ago. I really enjoyed using it, and the coffee it made was robust and flavorful -- due in part, no doubt, to the fact that requires more grounds than a drip-style coffee maker. Since it doesn't use a ... read more

  • I Like it!!!

    Dec 27, 2005 by
    Rated a Helpful Review
Pros: It brews fast, Coffee tastes clean and it looks good!
Cons: Filter needs to be used with a paper disc

Summary: I've had this coffee maker for a couple of weeks now and I still think it makes a nice clean tasting cup of coffee. It does take more time to clean, you just can't throw a filter in the garbage and be done, but I think it's well worth it. This coffee ... read more

  • Underwhelmed

Pros: Fun to watch, easy to use.
Cons: Poor flavour extraction on the coffee.

Summary: I bought this coffee maker after seeing it on the history chanel on a show about the history of coffee. I came here first to read what everyone had to say first. Let me say that the cool factor of this coffee maker is off the charts. I used it for a ... read more

  • Outstanding Coffee

    Aug 1, 2005 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: makes good coffee, made in Germany not China, looks great
Cons: delicate, a bit bulky, quirky brew time, water doesn't get hot enough

Summary: After much comparing and reviewing I decided to give the Bodum Santos vacuum coffee maker a try. Our Braun Flavor Select still brews a good cup of coffee but the carafe is cracked and now having been discontinued, it would have meant traveling or ... read more

  • Very cheaply made and faulty construction

    Dec 1, 2004 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Good tasting coffee. Fun to watch and good for dinner parties.
Cons: Very cheaply made. Serous flaws in the construction and electronics. Breaks easily.

Summary: This makes good tasting coffee, but I wish it was made better. I have been through two so far. The first unit last only a month before the pot burned since the automatic shut-off stopped working. I had to mail it back to Bodum to get a new one. I ... read more

  • Think carefully before you buy

    Nov 7, 2004 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Fun to watch. Good coffee. Brews quickly.
Cons: So difficult to clean, it trumps all this maker's positive aspects.

Summary: Definitely a conversation piece. It's easy to use, and it's fun to watch the coffee brew. Brew time is pretty quick. The coffee is good, no bitter taste, but certainly not a quantum leap beyond what I get from my Melitta (manual) funnel-drip. ... read more

  • Superior Cup o' Joe for the Willing

    Sep 7, 2004 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Super Joe, really cool brewing process to watch.
Cons: Could be a bit sturdier, but it's not a real problem.

Summary: Just to add to danneauxs's review, who does a top notch job expounding the virtues of this great coffeemaker, make sure you allow the Bodum to cool before cleaning and it will last a long time. And don't use a scouring pad to clean, just use a soft ... read more

  • A Better Morning Cup

Pros: Great coffee, easy controls, interesting conversation piece
    Cons: Difficult cleaning, expensive

Summary: I received this machine from my father, who is an engineer, but also somewhat of a coffee wimp. Needless to say, I was skeptical. The selling point of any vacuum brewer is the fact that the grounds are allowed to steep for a period of time before ... read more

    Feb 25, 2004 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Good looks. Fun to watch in action.
Cons: More expensive than drip makers to buy and maintain. Harder to clean. Uses more coffee.

Summary: I had been intrigued by the Bodum Mini Electric Santos ever since I read some copy about it in a gadget catalog touting its ability to make "the most satisfying" cup of coffee the writer had ever tasted. And the thing looks cool, to be sure. After ... read more

  • The best alternative to French press.

    Nov 25, 2003 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
    Pros: High-quality Coffee, High-quality Machine
Cons: Might become tedious for everyday use.

Summary: The first thing to know when buying a coffee maker is that simplicity is always key to a successful brew. If you don't believe this concept, you will after experimenting a few times. This fact alone is why the French press remains a favorite among coffee ... read more

Pros: Ease of Use, Great Taste, Facinating to watch!
Cons: Cleaning lower unit, uses lots of grind

Pros: Fast, easy to use, fast, flavorfull, conversation piece, fast
Cons: Care needed in cleaning, plastic not glass, price

Summary: Not sure about the difficulty everyone has with cleaning this unit. It may not be dishwasher safe but it's pretty easy to clean. The top bowl is easy to clean, just pop out the filter screen and rinse or wash by hand. In my opinion it's easier to clean ... read more

Pros: Great coffee, neat to watch, rather simpler than other vac pots
Cons: doesn't make enough for company

Summary: I am coffee nut. Not only do I own almost two dozen different coffee brewing devices, I also own three coffee roasters, and roast all of the coffee that I drink at home. I am not a fan of autodrip machines because, with a few exceptions, they ... read more

    Nov 9, 2002 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Excellent coffee flavor! Great show!
Cons: Tougher to "reload" than drip models. Bottom plate eventually leaks.

Summary: *** UPDATE - March 2008 *** I see the flaw in this design. The plastic carafe seems to have a weak point around the base. After repeated use it starts to leak. I'm still using it because I just love the smooth coffee flavor, but it's a little annoying ... read more
