Pros: Uses less water, stainless steel drum, no ring around the tub, see thru door Cons: After 3 1/2 years, two problems occurred, see update
I have always had an extra large capacity top loading washing machine until we moved into our new home in June of 2000. After a lot of research on top loaders versus front loaders, I decided to buy a front loader. Then I had to decide what brand of ...
Pros: Saves electricity, water, detergent, and money while getting clothes exceptionally clean. Cons: More expensive, but it will pay for itself over the life of the machine.
Two years ago, when I bought the Frigidaire Gallery Front Load Washer FWT449, it was the best washing machine available for the money. Although newer models have since superceded it, it is available in many stores for discount prices and is still a...
Pros: No Gimmicks! Frigidaire Front Loader That Cleans Better Than The Maytag, For Less $$! Cons: None
The Frigidaire Front Load Washer FWT449 is my choice, way ahead of the Maytag front loader. . .for many reasons. First of all, I never saw it as costly as it is marked, here. The regular price would more likely be $699.95 on the West Coast, at least....
Pros: Uses less water and SOAP! Cons: My wife worries about the front leaking
We needed a new washing machine & dryer and we live in a condo where the space to put a washer and dryer is limited. The old units were about 20 years old, still working, but had a very small capacity. The dryer was a 110V unit and took forever to dry...
Pros: cleaner clothes, less water, less detergent Cons: a little noisy during draining
We were not in need of a new washer when we purchased this washer. But we did have SOME reasons to buy it anyway. We figured when we moved out of the house, we would take it with us and leave the existing washer at that house (which is exactly what we...
Pros: uses little of everything, cleans clothes beautifully without destroying them Cons: takes a while to get used to
Two years ago we designed a double laundry room so that I could do the family's laundry faster and get to bed before midnight. That meant buying new washers and putting the old, reliable Maytag to pasture because it used too much energy, water, and...
Pros: lower operating costs, better cleaning Cons: expensive to purchase
It was time to give up on the 30+ year old Kenmore that I inherited from my parents (who inherited it from my dad's folks). It was a heavy-duty top loader that would occasionally overflow when running the perm-press cycle. But otherwise, it was a...
Pros: Clean clothes, space and energy efficient. Cons: Some difficulty in putting laundry in and removing it.
Trivia note: If you've ever watched Stuart Little, the movie with the voice of Michael J. Fox, and the acting talents of Geena Davis, and Hugh Laurie, then you've seen this washing machine. It's the washing machine that Stuart accidently gets ...

Pros: low water use Cons: dependability, and warranty service
After much comparison shopping I purchased this washer and it's matching dryer. I purchased both in April of this year. Out of the box the lock on the front door was defective, it buzzed all the time. I called for service and the part was ordered. It...
Pros: Efficient, energy saving, QUIET, gentle on clothes. Cons: Needs to be put on a pedestal (15 inches works great for us).
Put this puppy on a pedestal and not only will you save your back, you will save large amounts of water with peace of mind. Don't let the apparent size of the drum bother you, this baby can do the clothes. At first, we were considering the very...
Pros: Very Quiet*, water extraction, efficient use of water and electricity Cons: *Can be loud during high speed final spin.
With the new laws passed by congress to protect water resources, traditional style top loading washing machines are on the way out (or at least facing major redesigns with unknown cleaning effectiveness.) I don't know how others feel, but I'm getting...
Pros: Economical, Highly Efficient, Practical Cons: Price at approximately $700.00
I have been using this Frigidaire Front Loader now for one year. When my husband and I went shopping for a new washer and dryer neither of us had a front loader in mind. After using her for a year I must say that I have no idea why I ever used a top...
Pros: Quiet, fast, efficient, ecologically responsible Cons: God forbid you should leave anything in a pocket!!!
UPDATE AS OF 11 JAN 2002:
It's now been a week since I've been able to do laundry. The repairman just left, after telling me he was completely unable to repair this machine and "needs to do more research into Frigidaire's quirks." Last time I...
Pros: Low water use = big utility savings, extremely quiet, spins clothes very dry. Cons: Smallish opening sometimes makes loading/unloading slightly difficult.
*UPDATE 5/11/01* - After more then a month of using the machine, our first utility bills proved to show a definate decrease in energy use. We're impressed. One minor quirk we have discovered is that small items (Such as my childrens socks) sometimes ...
Pros: Well built energy and water saver, great washer Cons: Font loaders are harder to load than top loaders, but no big deal
The FWT645 Frigidaire Front Load washer is the replacement for the FWT449. You should be able to purchase this at a discount at less than $700. There are two versions available. This is the model number for the undercounter, stackable unit. The FWTR645...

Pros: Saves wear & tear on clothes, uses less water, and use less laundry detergent! Cons: Became a major lemon after two years and had to be replaced.
I originally did a review on this washing machine two years ago, praising it. The first year or so, it was wonderful! The first washing machine my husband and I owned died after 15 years of use. We did not have a lot of money to spend so first ...

Pros: gentle on clothes, cleans well, energy efficient Cons: design defect, poor service
I also loved this machine, it cleans very well, it saves energy, has a good capacity, it's easy to use, and is relatively quiet. The signal volume for the end of cycle can be regulated, and its knits and delicates cycle has been a great stand-in for...
Pros: Saves energy, detergent, cuts drying time Cons: Absolutely none

Pros: clothes are cleaner, less water, less energy Cons: none in my opinion
UPDATE 10/12/2005 Ok So as I have said below the original post was for a washer I bought in 2000. I bought a house that had the same washer, but it was made in 1998, so I sold the one I bought. Since I moved into this house in 2002 the washer ...

The Frigidaire front-loading FWT 449 with four temperature setting, 2-way tumble action and a stainless steel cage offers an ecologically friendly alternative to the more water-wasteful top-loaders. The good news is that this product can handle large...
Pros: Cleans great! Quiet. Economical to operate Cons: None
I bought this washer at Lowes a year ago for $650 then got a $50 rebate to bring the price down to $600. I selected the Frigidaire over the other front loaders available based on reviews I had read and on the price. I couldn't see paying more for the...
Pros: Cleans clothes better, uses less water Cons: Poor reliability, extremely poor service
I purchased a Frigidaire front-loader in December 1999 based upon very positive reviews and the fact that it would use less water, energy, and detergent. It worked wonderfully until October 2000. We have five small children and probably wash 10-15...
Pros: Quiet, gentle on clothes, uses less water Cons: Price; detergent is expensive too
I'll never go back to those top-loaders. This baby is very quiet (except in spin cycle), cleans well and is very gentle on clothes. It uses very little hot water, which means big savings for us Californians who pay outrageous sums of money for natural...
Pros: efficient, effective Cons: hard to measure soap
door becomes lose after five years
I bought this washer a year ago, when moving into a new house. Consumer Reports had just done a story on front-loaders and I was sold, so I went to check them out. Although this was not the highest rated machine by CR, it was the lowest priced and ...
Pros: Efficient, great on delicates and all washing Cons: Door latch solenoid poorly designed and very noisy.

Pros: Nice looking, washes well Cons: Very lousy customer service, no more toll free number available
I bought the frigidaire front-loader back in October of 1998. I believe that was when they first came out. I loved the machine. It washed clothes very well, used less water and electricity. Two problems have happened since then. First the bearing ...
Pros: Savings on water, detergent & softener + energy savings too! Cons: Slightly higher initial cost.
We purchased this machine after our top-loader bit the dust. The benefits to this machine are energy savings, detergent and fabric softener savings and the shortened time it takes to run a cycle.
We bought the Frigidaire front load washer and matching dryer two years ago. About six weeks ago I noticed black marks allover a load of clothing. When I called Frigidaire (Electrolux), I was told it was coming from the black "boot" (seal) around the ...
Pros: Energy effecient. Large Capacity. Cons: Bad pump design, seal problems. Also objects from pockets can ruin pump.
Poor service.
This washer is great, works very well. BUT it has problems
in the pump design. First the pump seal tends to leak and by the time you find the puddle of water on the floor, the water spray from the leaking seal ruins the open motor. And
they...
Pros: Saves you money on your electric bill and water bill and good for the environment! Cons: Bending over to load the washer or removing the clothes

Pros: Fits in an 1850's carriage house. Cons: Doesn't have a light.

Pros: large load, less water, less soap, less clothing wear and tear Cons: can't add an item once you start a load
The Frigidaire Front-Load FWT449 is my new washer -- purchased in May and I love it. I chose it because of the low water and soap usage compared to top loaders, the clothes saving feature of less friction (thus less wear and tear on clothing) and MOST...

Pros: Cool looking, efficient, entertains the cats Cons: glitchy, doesn't get clothes as clean;
Okay, I will be the first to admit I was impressed by the coolness of a front loading machine and the space efficiency of being able to stack washer and dryer. Plus there was the consideration of saving the universe by using less water. For the first...
Pros: Saves water, time, uses less soap. Cons: Price.
We needed a new washer. They no longer made parts for our old one. I had heard a lot about the new front loading washers and decided to check it out. I've owned it for about one year and I am very pleased with my purchase.
This washer looks like the European models, but does not clean like them. After a year in France where no stain was a match for our washer we decided to switch to a front loading machine. This machine doesn't hold a candle to its European counterparts...
I purchased this washer because I moved into a new house and had never owned a washer or a dryer before. After extensive research, I knew I wanted a front loading washer. They are a lot more energy efficient then top loaders. They use 40-50% less...
Pros: Does a GREAT job cleaning all types of clothes. Cons: None

Pros: Clean clothes, uses less water Cons: takes a little while.
I got it for the energy/water efficiency, but man does it wash clothes!

Pros: self adjusting water level Cons: hard to find front loader detergent
I have owned my front loader for almost a year now and I am very happy with it. It does an excellent job cleaning and rinsing my clothes. I feel because it doesn't have an agitator that it doesn't wear out your clothes as fast. Also there is more room...
Pros: good energy efficiency when it works Cons: spin cycle and pump quit working after 9 months
I bought this machine after reading about how efficient, both in energy and supplies, it was. I also have a friend who had purchased it about 3 months before and she felt it was a good machine. We both have large families, she has 7 and I have 5, so our...
Pros: savings!! Gentle, thorough cleaning with less detergent and water Cons: pricey, front load means bending to load and unload

Pros: Does use less water, and detergent. Cons: Items are able to get into the pump and then lock it up.
I bought this Frigidaire washing machine a couple of years ago. I have had nothing but trouble with it. I had heard that it cleans your clothing better then a top loader, uses less water and detergent. It does use less water and detergent, but I would...
Pros: the greatest! Cons: delicate don't get wrung out
I cannot remember when I didn't want a glass door washing machine. (guess it is left over from visiting laundromats!) When we were finally in the market for a new washer, I insisted that we only look at glass door models. Well, that left only two on...
Pros: Cleaner clothes, saves resources Cons: Washes more clothes than the dryer can dry
The Frigidaire FWT449 is a front loading washer with impressive engineering. From the elegant and easy to read front control panel to its quiet operation, this machine is a joy to own and operate. I tested my new machine with a load of dish towels that...

Pros: Economical, gentle on clothes, efficient Cons: Detergent more pricey
When we arrived in the US I was amazed to see the size of the washer in our rental. I assumed the previous occupant had taken in washing for the whole street. Imagine my surprise when I found that this was the norm and not the exception. European washers...
Pros: Great wash/Little wear and tear Cons: More expensive than a top loader
I purchased this washer in September, 1999, when my old one finally died. I compared several front loading machines, and decided this one was the best deal for my money. I have been very pleased with it. My clothes come out great, and I have been...
Pros: Cleaner clothes. Uses less water. Cons: Expensive. Have to bend over to load and unload.
Thus far, after over a year of ownership I am quite pleased with my Frigidaire front- loader. The machine does appear to a much better job than conventional top-loader American-style washing machines. It uses far less laundry detergent and bleach, but...
Pros: Very energy efficient Cons: Does not hold as much as a top loading machine
The Frigidaire Front Loading Washing Machine is a must. We bought ours for $650 with a $50 rebate around the first of December '99. Not only does it use less detergent it also spins the laundry so that it is only damp by the time it goes in the dryer....
Pros: water and detergent conservative, gentle on clothing Cons: faulty dispenser, poor tub emptying
I purchased my machine in November of 1998 after setting my sights on a front loader and having very few choices of models. This model was much more affordable than its competitors models, so this is the one I chose. I have no regrets and feel that it...
Pros: uses less water and electricity, gets clothes clean Cons: none

Pros: Saves water Cons: Must be repeatedly repaired! No help from Frigidaire.Repairmen say never buy it.
I am so sick of this machine. It has to be repeatedly repaired. Frigidaire is not help on repair. Repairmen do not want to work on the machine. They refuse to come to the house. It cost $375.00 for a service call and a new timer. It has been...

really excellent washing machine by lfp98 ,Jan 17 '04
Pros: Does an excellent job.
Uses less water.
Gets clothes drier, due to faster spin. Cons: The wash cycle is longer than a top-loader.
Complicated and probably difficult/expensive to repair.
In short, we find everything they say about front-loaders is true. They use much less water, they are more gentle on the clothes and they remove more of the water. Basically a decent top-loader is $400 while this front-loader is about $600. They say you'll recoup that in a few years and I don't doubt it, due to less hot water and less electricity used in drying. And so entertaining! We didn't even consider the Maytag, because it has no window. I don't know yet about durability as we've only had this 6 months, but so far it's great.
Just be sure the installer removes the mounting brackets!! Our guys (from Lowe's) did not, and the machine vibrated violently during spin, until I found the necessary installation instructions on the Frigidaire site and removed them myself. They're behind the lower front panel, and look like concrete reinforcing rods.
Pros: Uses less water. Cons: Reliability.
Poor service.
Price.
Bought a house that had this washing machine. Thought this was a plus. Label on front of machine says that machine was manufactured in 10/98. Well this washer lasted 5 years. Rear bearing is rusted out and repairman says about $400.00 to repair. No way. This appears to be a common problem and anyone considering this washer should check out the this information http://www.applianceaid.com/frigidaire_frontload_washer.html#noise
Pros: Clothes come out damp, need less time in the dryer. Cons: No cons; bought the same washer again when I moved!
I bought this washer (and the gas dryer) first in 1999. After the very first wash cycle, I swore I'd never have any other. Four years and many trouble-free washes later, I moved into a new house AND bought the same washer/dryer combo for a second time!
Pros: Attractive, easy on clothes, cleans well, low water usage Cons: Sideways spinning of front-loader causes unbalanced stress on drum supports--drum breaks off spring supports
We bought this front-loading machine for all the aforementioned reasons (Consumer Reports review, less water, less detergent, trying to re-create that scene from Stuart Little--oh, no, not that).
I have used and abused this baby with four kids and a pool--it gets lots of use--about 10 loads a week.
Love it until it breaks down.
It was actually pretty easy to replace the motor ($80 to order the part online and follow easy directions to install it--and hey, I'm 'just' a mom!) when a few pocketed items made it through the drainage system to the drain hose and clogged the motor assembly--how a dime and tweezers made it through that far, I'll never know.
But now, the whole drum has broken off of its supports; an online blog by an engineer tells me it's structurally bound to happen, with the side-spinning motion of a front loader causing what one would call a perpetual "unbalanced" load action and bouncing/stressing the supports. (See http://www.physicsforums.com/archive/index.php/t-75765.html )
So off to the store I suppose. But I may call Frigidaire first to see if they have come up with something to overcome that inherent design flaw.
Pros: Ease of use. Gets the clothes reasonably clean. Cons: Fairly noisy--especially when the washer's magnetic latch isn't fully engaged.
In four years, we've had our Frigidaire Gallery dryer repaired twice, and it's failing again. The knobs broke when it was only a few months old. The magnetic door mechanism in the washer has been working off and on for months, and after trying to fix the latch myself, the repairman is on the way--but had to wait two weeks for Frigidaire to deliver the needed parts.
