Pros: Economical, gentle on clothes, efficient

When we arrived in the US I was amazed to see the size of the washer in our rental. I assumed the previous occupant had taken in washing for the whole street. Imagine my surprise when I found that this was the norm and not the exception. European washers...

Wonderful Washer

Pros: Efficient, energy saving, QUIET, gentle on clothes.
Cons: Needs to be put on a pedestal (15 inches works great for us).
Put this puppy on a pedestal and not only will you save your back, you will save large amounts of water with peace of mind. Don't let the apparent size of the drum bother you, this baby can do the clothes. At first, we were considering the very...

reliablity questionable

by kjhyatt , Dec 12 '99
Pros: low water use
Cons: dependability, and warranty service
After much comparison shopping I purchased this washer and it's matching dryer. I purchased both in April of this year. Out of the box the lock on the front door was defective, it buzzed all the time. I called for service and the part was ordered. It...

WASHER WASHED US OUT!

by NormLoni , May 15 '02
Pros: Saves wear & tear on clothes, uses less water, and use less laundry detergent!
Cons: Became a major lemon after two years and had to be replaced.
I originally did a review on this washing machine two years ago, praising it. The first year or so, it was wonderful! The first washing machine my husband and I owned died after 15 years of use. We did not have a lot of money to spend so first ...

Pump problems

by CDJP , Oct 25 '00
Pros: Does use less water, and detergent.
Cons: Items are able to get into the pump and then lock it up.
I bought this Frigidaire washing machine a couple of years ago. I have had nothing but trouble with it. I had heard that it cleans your clothing better then a top loader, uses less water and detergent. It does use less water and detergent, but I would...

ruined clothing

by washgirl , Jun 28 '04
Pros: Looks nice
Cons: see above.
We bought the Frigidaire front load washer and matching dryer two years ago. About six weeks ago I noticed black marks allover a load of clothing. When I called Frigidaire (Electrolux), I was told it was coming from the black "boot" (seal) around the ...

Don't waste your time!

by calif827 , Jan 21 '00
Pros: Saves water
Cons: Must be repeatedly repaired! No help from Frigidaire.Repairmen say never buy it.
I am so sick of this machine. It has to be repeatedly repaired. Frigidaire is not help on repair. Repairmen do not want to work on the machine. They refuse to come to the house. It cost $375.00 for a service call and a new timer. It has been...

This machine requires constant baby-sitting

by kwschumm , Oct 24 '02
Pros: Frugal use of water
Cons: Poor at rinsing Unreliable drainage Balance problems Door problems
We were lucky enough to be able to buy all new appliances when we built a new house in 2000. After extensive research we purchased a Frigidaire Gallery front-loading washer, model FWT449, to conserve water and thus reduce the load on our septic system....

it's a shame

by shrimporama , Apr 01 '03
Pros: gentle on clothes, cleans well, energy efficient
Cons: design defect, poor service
I also loved this machine, it cleans very well, it saves energy, has a good capacity, it's easy to use, and is relatively quiet. The signal volume for the end of cycle can be regulated, and its knits and delicates cycle has been a great stand-in for...

Love this washer
by tippie ,Jul 13 '04
Pros: Clothes come out damp, need less time in the dryer.
Cons: No cons; bought the same washer again when I moved!
I bought this washer (and the gas dryer) first in 1999. After the very first wash cycle, I swore I'd never have any other. Four years and many trouble-free washes later, I moved into a new house AND bought the same washer/dryer combo for a second time!

really excellent washing machine
by lfp98 ,Jan 17 '04
Pros: Does an excellent job. Uses less water. Gets clothes drier, due to faster spin.
Cons: The wash cycle is longer than a top-loader. Complicated and probably difficult/expensive to repair.
In short, we find everything they say about front-loaders is true. They use much less water, they are more gentle on the clothes and they remove more of the water. Basically a decent top-loader is $400 while this front-loader is about $600. They say you'll recoup that in a few years and I don't doubt it, due to less hot water and less electricity used in drying. And so entertaining! We didn't even consider the Maytag, because it has no window. I don't know yet about durability as we've only had this 6 months, but so far it's great.

Just be sure the installer removes the mounting brackets!! Our guys (from Lowe's) did not, and the machine vibrated violently during spin, until I found the necessary installation instructions on the Frigidaire site and removed them myself. They're behind the lower front panel, and look like concrete reinforcing rods.

Not very reliable
by crwestphal ,Aug 05 '04
Pros: Ease of use. Gets the clothes reasonably clean.
Cons: Fairly noisy--especially when the washer's magnetic latch isn't fully engaged.
In four years, we've had our Frigidaire Gallery dryer repaired twice, and it's failing again. The knobs broke when it was only a few months old. The magnetic door mechanism in the washer has been working off and on for months, and after trying to fix the latch myself, the repairman is on the way--but had to wait two weeks for Frigidaire to deliver the needed parts.

Loved it, What Now?
by onemooremom ,Sep 14 '06
Pros: Attractive, easy on clothes, cleans well, low water usage
Cons: Sideways spinning of front-loader causes unbalanced stress on drum supports--drum breaks off spring supports
We bought this front-loading machine for all the aforementioned reasons (Consumer Reports review, less water, less detergent, trying to re-create that scene from Stuart Little--oh, no, not that).
I have used and abused this baby with four kids and a pool--it gets lots of use--about 10 loads a week.
Love it until it breaks down.
It was actually pretty easy to replace the motor ($80 to order the part online and follow easy directions to install it--and hey, I'm 'just' a mom!) when a few pocketed items made it through the drainage system to the drain hose and clogged the motor assembly--how a dime and tweezers made it through that far, I'll never know.
But now, the whole drum has broken off of its supports; an online blog by an engineer tells me it's structurally bound to happen, with the side-spinning motion of a front loader causing what one would call a perpetual "unbalanced" load action and bouncing/stressing the supports. (See http://www.physicsforums.com/archive/index.php/t-75765.html )

So off to the store I suppose. But I may call Frigidaire first to see if they have come up with something to overcome that inherent design flaw.

Wish me luck.

5 year life

Pros: Uses less water.
Cons: Reliability. Poor service. Price.
Bought a house that had this washing machine. Thought this was a plus. Label on front of machine says that machine was manufactured in 10/98. Well this washer lasted 5 years. Rear bearing is rusted out and repairman says about $400.00 to repair. No way. This appears to be a common problem and anyone considering this washer should check out the this information http://www.applianceaid.com/frigidaire_frontload_washer.html#noise
