  • The Liberal Media: a Thoroughly Green Magazine

    Nov 8, 2004 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Liberal magazine with very balanced and insightful stories
    Cons: Only bimonthly

Summary: If you want a view on reality that is complementary to what the “Big Media” are feeding you, Mother Jones is a great choice. I was unaware that this leftist publication has been circulating for 29 years. Based in San Francisco and published ... read more

  • An interesting liberal magazine covering current issues well.

    Feb 20, 2004 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Very interesting liberal leaning perspective. Low price $18 for 6 issues per year.
Cons: Sometimes views can be too unbalanced to maintain credibility.

Summary: This is a very interesting magazine that plays an important role within the U.S. media as a serious magazine covering current issues from a liberal perspective. In between covers, you get a lot of information and opinions at a pretty low price. The ... read more

  • Over the Top?

    Jul 21, 2001 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Exposes issues that sometimes get little or no press coverage.
Cons: A little too narrow-minded sometimes.

Summary: I've been reading Mother Jones for about 8 years now, and I have seen the magazine go through some editorial and design changes -- not all of them have been good. On one hand, Mother Jones does expose issues that may get little or no coverage ... read more

  • Issues That Hit Home

    Nov 29, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Well researched stories which advance humanitarian causes
    Cons: none

Summary: Mother Jones is a magazine that pulls no punches when it comes to exposing wrongs, furthering human rights, ripping open environmental issues, and presenting REAL news in an unbiased and well researched manner. Typical stories in MJ deal with ... read more

  • For everything your newspaper does not write about

    Sep 26, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Good, informative writing, low subscription price
Cons: only six times a year! Friends hardly ever give borrowed issues back

Summary: If you've ever been curious to find out what all that Agent Orange has been doing to people in Southeast Asia, or how the black churches across the country are dealing with the AIDS epidemic, then start reading this mag. Mother Jones is ... read more

  • Mojo!

    Jun 30, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Great Reporting, Liberal Point of View, Cheap Subscriptions
Cons: Only Comes Out 6 Times Per Year

Summary: Mother Jones is a great resource for anyone interested in the dealings of companies other than Microsoft and for those people who actually care about the world in which we live. Each issue of Mother Jones features an article about corporate exploitation ... read more

  • Ummmm....Mother Jones?

    Jun 18, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: straight news without corporate influence; leftist outlook on life and the world
Cons: well, if you are conservative, there's plenty, but in my opinion: NONE!

Summary: Nursery rhyme collector? Nun who worked in Calcutta? Someone we learned about in school? Each of these "descriptions" is equally inaccurate...In fact, Mother Jones was a liberal activist who worked for women's rights and ... read more

  • Muckraking journalism at its best

    Apr 18, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
    Pros: Great politics
Cons: Too glossy and slick sometimes

Summary: This country has had a long history of socialist agitators and hell raisers though I didn't learn about any of them in the watered down c**p taught in school. Mother Jones magazine is named after one of the best, most fearless, dedicated, social justice ... read more

  • Who Needs Tabloids?

    Mar 13, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
    Pros: Hard-hitting, often amusing.
Cons: Makes me remember the world is screwed up.

Summary: Although I'm amused by the cover headlines in the check-out line, I think it'd be great if the supermarkets had Mother Jones up there along with the Enquirer, the Weekly World News, and all that stuff. The stories in Mother Jones are every bit as ... read more

  • Stories You Don't Often Hear

    Jan 26, 2000 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Insightful, In-depth coverage, Stories not covered by other media establishements
Cons: Liberal Bias, Can be preachy occasionally

Summary: The best thing about Mother Jones is that the content is predominately original, and not to be found in other publications. There are stories given a great deal of attention in this magazine that never make it into the majority of national media ... read more

  • A non-corporate version of Time or Newsweek - and much better!!

    Nov 24, 1999 by
    Rated a Helpful Review
    Pros: excellent coverage
    Cons: flaky design standards

Summary: Mother Jones has changed it's format over the past several years, but it has remained loyal in covering some of the most interesting national issues. From Gay boyscouts to G. W. Bush's political hand-me-downs, Mother Jones presents a strong, opinionated ... read more

  • Now, This is Liberal Media.

    Oct 24, 1999 by
    Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros: Informative, diligent in its investigations
    Cons: Occasionally uses shallow reasoning

Summary: Mother Jones doesn't hide its colors - it is liberal. I pick this magazine up three or four times a year at the bookstore; sometimes I like it, sometimes I don't. Mother Jones is best as an investigative magazine and puts together a great ... read more

  • Express Customer Reviews

  • Ridiculous customer service

    Sep 3, 2008 by
    Rated Show
    Pros: Decent content.
    Cons:

I've had better customer service at fast food joints.

Summary: I am impressed with MJ content, but cancelled my subscription due to abysmally poor service issues. I was innundated with junk mail after subscribing (they sell your address to nonprofit direct mail lists) - a serious faux pas, I would think, in light of ... read more

  • Creating some balance in the news

    Dec 26, 2005 by
    Rated Show
Pros: Unabashedly liberal and NOT under the control of Rupert Murdock or the White House.
Cons: Would be hated by Consevatives (if they would read it!)

Summary: Contrary to the mythology perpetuated by the Right-Wing politicos currently in control of the inner workings of our Federal administration, the mainstream media is not, in fact, controlled by the Left. It is, in fact, as many thoughtful commentators have ... read more
