Pros: Occasionally has good articles. Cons: Too many advertisements, Too much flip-flopping.
Music magazines are not in a good state these days. Rolling Stone, the leader, is worth buying once in a while. But as a whole is too inconsistent to maintain an edge as the leader, While Revolver (which I previously praised) has gone from being a symbol...
Pros: Has a wide variety of music articles, a definitive youth magazine Cons: Too many ads, doesn't focus on music, they took away Sean Landers
Spin is a definitive magazine for America's youth. They are not just a normal rock/pop music publication, but one that goes far beyond that. They cover everything from politics, trends, music, movies etc.
Pros: Inexpensive price; Current information about up and coming alternative musicians; New smaller format (dimensions of the magazine) is more manageable to read or put in your bookbag, briefcase, or what-have-you. Cons: Sexually-explicit imagery is inappropriate for their youth readership; Perfumed ads are nauseatingly fragrant; Coverage is predominantly on Caucasians, specifically males, with smatterings of non-Caucasian artists of both genders highlighted.
PREFACE:
This magazine is reflective of our American youth culture. Based on what I see and hear in the music, which is highlighted in this review, our contemporary society is a living nightmare.
Pros: Some interest to music fans filters through the glitter. Cons: The glitter, unless you're a 17 reading teeny-bopper.
And here I thought Rolling Stone(RS) had gotten too glittery. Compared to this fashion/MTV drenched piece of fluff, RS is a paragon of music journalism. From begin to end Spin assaults you with everything that's wrong with music, and unlike...
Pros: so shocking you kinda want to see what they'll do next Cons: makes being a junkie look cool, irrelevant, poor journalism
I'll wager dollars to doughnuts the target demographic for SPIN magazine is 13 to 30-year-old skaters and drug addicts living in major metropolitian cities who hit every underground club there is and scoff at any band, movie, book or any piece of ...
Pros: Credible writing, thought provoking literature on music and society Cons: Often falls to heavy bias, immoral journalistic behaviors, and high brow acting
Just recently, I picked up the new issue of Spin Magazine, their "15 years of Revolutionary Music" issue, as the cover boldly exclaims. As a veteran music rag reader and highly critical fan, I must say that Spin is one of those things you...
Pros: smart-ass lit theory applied to pop culture Cons: smart-ass lit theory applied to pop culture
When I decided to give my opinion on Spin (more on this in a minute) I consulted the already existing negative reviews. I have to say that I was disappointed. Critics of the magazine seem to find fault with the manner in which it fails to achieve...
Pros: Great articles, new artists, old artists, not overfilled with teeny-bopper schlock Cons: None that I can think of
I recently became a subscriber to SPIN magazine, and really did not know what to expect. I figured, why not? I'll give it a shot. Boy was I surprised! What a great magazine for the Generation X and Generation Y, respectively.
Pros: Relevancy, layout, writing Cons: none from my pov
I try like hell to keep up on the things that interest my kids. My parent's didn't do it for me, so I thought I'd do it for my kids. I have a ten year old, a thirteen year old and a twenty-one year old.
Pros: Hilarity ensues upon cracking any random issue. Cons: Obsessed with its own hipness, poor writing, suffocating in ads.
Due to a weakness I am still trying to rectify, I gave in to a door-to-door salesman and subscribed to this unfortunate rag for three years. Cursed as I now am by its monthly presence, I can speak as an expert on the unprecedented stupidity of this...
Pros: Great feature writing Cons: Constant, neverending glorification of horrific acts
"Spin will rock your world with coverage of the progressive music scene and in-depth investigative reporting on a slew of issues, from politics to pop culture. Reviews, essays, profiles, and interviews make up a package of pure rock energy with an...
Pros: cheap Cons: bad articles, bad fashion section, bad reviews, bad everything
It seems like there is a rip-off of just about everything these days, and the same holds true for Magazines that review the modern music scene. Spin Magazine is unquestionably a Rolling Stone copycat, and a bad one at that. I subscribed to Spin, having...
Pros: Hasn't been good since 1995 Cons: Has been around after 1995
I have subscribed to this magazine twice. The first time I ended my subscription, it was because I had no time to read it. The second time I end it, which will be within a month when my final issue comes, it will be because I can't stand it now. ...
I subscribed for one year-- couldn't st and it. Only what, 40 pages of ads before the contents, 20 after, and 5 of people complaining about the number of ads and that back page guy (he still there?).
Pros: interesting articles, sense of humor Cons: too many ads
i don't buy magazines very often at all. in fact, the only time i really purchase any magazine is when i'm trapped somewhere and need something to read. in this case, i purchased the latest issue of spin in the mall while waiting to meet someone. out...
