  • "Wishing you a very unhappy birthday" - The Smiths' Strangeways, Here we Come

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Feb 19, 2013
Pros: This is a five-star record, even when compared to the band's earlier efforts
Cons: Nothing on here really rocks as hard as "The Queen is Dead"

Summary: “Too precious to lose forever?” Maybe not. It’s in some rock and roll bands book or other that I once owned that those words are from; a caption for a photo of Manchester, England’s The Smiths vocalist Morrissey and ... read more

  • Oh Smiths, I won't share you

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jul 27, 2012
Pros: Legendary as always, Marr and Morrissey are on fire.
    Cons: Last of The Smiths.

Summary: There must be quite a few things The Smiths won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them. Their final album, Strangeways, Here We Come, is not only an example of what The Smiths sound like (it’s great to listen to if ... read more

  • First it will break your spleen and knees, and then it'll really lay into thee

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Feb 19, 2008
Pros: The cynicism and beauty just wrap their legs around each other. Musicianship, poetry, groove.
Cons: The last several, while not bad songs, are typical enough to almost lose a star.

Summary: On Strangeways, Here We Come, their last studio album, The Smiths really pulled a strong one out of their butts. It’s definitely a continuation of the brooding style and jangly form found on its predecessors, but hey, it was working for ... read more

  • Tip Toe Through The Smiths

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jun 26, 2005
    Pros: Mostly very strong throughout
Cons: Many blatant lapses in concentration

Summary: I was listening recently to an episode of the very funny BBC Radio 4 programme ‘I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue’ where in one of the rounds the contestants have to sing one song to the tune of another. The panellist was singing ‘Girlfriend In A Coma’ to the ... read more

  • The Smiths Swan Song

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jul 12, 2003
Pros: A gracious ending to a too short career.
Cons: The slipping mark of perfection before the album's close

Summary: When British music history closed the book on the Smiths in 1987, they were (and still are) generall ... read more

  • Smiths' last goodbye: I want the Freedom and I want the guy

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    May 10, 2002
Pros: Smiths' swan song is their maturest, most beautiful disc of their career.
Cons: It's their final album as a group & I'll cry if I want to.

Summary: The Smiths' final album, Strangeways Here We Come, was another flawless song cycle by the group that for the most part told the story of thousands of young lives, mine included. While some critics complained that Morrissey was too whiny, ... read more

  • “Oh, very nice...but maybe in the next world”

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Dec 11, 2001
Pros: Cleverly pointed lyrics and more varied musical arrangements than what we’re used to.
Cons: Feels uneven and incomplete—intriguing, provocative ideas merely evaporate into the overproduced ether....

Summary: Generally more interesting than the overpraised The Queen is Dead, this swan-song effort from the Smiths is an unusually baffling, unresolved affair. Indeed, on this album, the increased musical adventurousness of Marr and the ... read more

  • The Death of a Gothic Legend

Rated a Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jan 29, 2001
Pros: Great melodies, fabulous lyrics, some truly excellent songs
    Cons: The last Smiths album

Summary: This is one of my favorite Smiths albums, regardless of the fact that most people I know prefer The Queen Is Dead or another of their offerings. I enjoy the songs on this more every time I listen to it. From the jaunty A Rush and a Push and ... read more

  • Not Your Normal Suicide Songs

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jan 28, 2001
Pros: Morrissey is a poet; Marr one of the great 80's guitarists
Cons: The end of the Morrisey/Marr collaboration.

Summary: I won't go out on a limb and say that Strangeways, Here We Come is the best cd/album ever by the Smiths or their singer, Morrissey, but I will call it my favorite. Made in 1987 right before the breakup of The Smiths, Morrissey has certainly ... read more

  • not that strange after all

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Sep 2, 2000
Pros: morrissey + marr is always good
Cons: it was all going to their heads at this point

Summary: Wow. Can there really be no other review of this album on this site? Stunning. Sure, it was their last proper lp, and to many, the least of their achievements. Sure, it was a sad goodbye to a once-promising career, not just for the group but for one of ... read more

Pros: Great lyrics with amazing music.
Cons: It was their last cd!

Summary: I am still learning about The Smiths and the influence they have had on music today and the effect they had on many of the artists styles so this review is as honest as can be. I have honestly thoroughly enjoyed this album and can't believe I've
