Pros: pickin, singing, police chases and damn fine studio work
Cons: Not up to live show energy, but how could it be?
Obviously the energy that is Yonder Mountain String Band cannot be captured in studio. Nevertheless, this album does capture some of their better playing. All the instruments are pronounced without being over powering. The blend well with the vocals. There is a nice overall balance.
Begining with the soft "Half-moon rising", the album sets a nice relaxed mood for the album. Then it picks up with "mental breakdown" and a frenzy of pickin'. Keeping up the pace, "Bolten Stretch", and "Hole" show some nice harmonies and songwritting skills. Slowing back down a bit and getting a little old timey sounding, "darkness and light" is an album highlight. "On the run", a concert favorite brings it back up only to drop right back down with a nice rendition of "eight cylinders". Another album highlight is "40 miles from denver". The album continues on with great hits and new sounds to deliver a great album that delivers with every track.
Of course this cannot be compared to their live shows but this is at least a showcase of some their songwritting and pickin skills. If you are a fan of Yonder, this is a must have.
