Is my new found love a bit psychotic? - Medulla (_____ Surrounded)

by shopaholic_man shopaholic_man is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Music, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Nov 24 '06
Pros: It IS unique.
Cons: It is a little TOO unique.
Did you ever fall in love with someone and somewhere in the relationship you realize that the object of your love is a bit psychotic? Marches to a different drummer? As I delve deeper into Bjork's box, I find that she is more than a bit strange. I found ...

The Marrow of Björk is far less interesting than her gimmickless talent.

by tjhassecrets tjhassecrets is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Music, , Nov 15 '09
Pros: Some great good material.
Cons: "I'm Björk, and I'm so weird that I can get away with this crap."
= You can use this tooth As a ladder up to The mouth’s cradle The mouth’s cradle… = For the charts of my Vespertine review, I stated that I have no clue how Björk wrote and created an ...

My Body is My Cathedral. My Body is My Choir.

by plorentz Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Aug 24 '04
Pros: Confrontational, delicate, intimate - it's unlike anything else you'll ever hear. Ever.
Cons: Check your expectations at the "Play" button; not for the unadventurous.
So here we are all thirteen of us, laying in very close proximity to each other on the dusty floor of the rehearsal space, our eyes closed to the harsh blue fluorescent light, the errant crumbs of ceiling tile that occasionally fall on our faces; and a ...

Bjork's Look Into Our Medulla

by steven9988 , Sep 12 '04
Pros: Lots of very amazing stuff. Wonderfully put together songs.
Cons: Some songs aren't mind blowing and only just "good." Others are too good.
There's not much to say while anticipating Bjork's upcoming release "Medulla" The only information that had been released is that it would be mostly comprised of vocals and would feature many guest vocalists such as spazz noise generator Mike Patton, ...

'Inner Ballad'

by immortalcritic , Apr 17 '07
Pros: ten years after her signature 'Homogenic' disc, Bjork continues to uncover more sonic inspiration
Cons: none.
Ten years ago, just before her brilliant 'Homogenic' album would revolutionize the possibilities of electronica, SPIN magazine featured Bjork posing in a wide assortment of elementary poses replete with green foliage. After a first listen to 'Medulla', ...

One breath away.

by kuroshiro , Nov 06 '04
Pros: A gorgeous creation by one of the world's best artists.
Cons: Not as unified as her previous efforts.
This was Bjork's most anticipated album. Her fans were caught up in the ecstatic, epic dance part of Debut, the ultra-eclectic, wide-eyed wonder of Post, the darkness and rugged strength of Homogenic, and the gorgeous, emotional ghost that was ...

i want to have....capacity, bone by bone, stone by stone

by jordanfitz1988 , Apr 13 '06
Pros: like marmite, either you love the songs....
Cons: ....or you find them terribly dull/unlistenable
Medulla, bjork’s most experimental album to date, I will mark the songs out of 5 stars * Pleasure is all mine: Well, although I like this song a lot, the first 30 seconds or so I cannot listen to, the same goes for the end of the song as well, and ...

What Was She DOING In That Recording Studio?!

by dominicano1197 , Dec 17 '05
Pros: Hey, it's different! The elaborate vocals; lyrics have wonderful symbolism...her voice!
Cons: A bit too ambitious-bordering-on-pretentious ("Ancestors" is RIDICULOUS!); the grunting...her voice!
Like so many of our commercially overlooked geniuses of music history, Bjork is either an artist you adore or despise, both with a passion. I happen to adore her. Her sound is so eccentric, it's almost as if she WANTED to have a cult following! She ...

A little bit sweet and little bit bitter...

by antiokian , Sep 01 '04
Pros: The album is eccentric and gorgeously put.
Cons: the album is eccentric and gorgeously put.
This album is, in the fewest words possible, the natural evolution for an artist like Bjork. I know this woman, I'm familiar with her work (like a lot of us are) and somehow understand that her mind works in mysterious ways... A proof of this is plain ...

Accessibility? Pah!

by floatingcity , Dec 16 '06
Pros: Creative and thoughtful. Lots of work put in - and it shows.
Cons: Little memorability. A great experiment rather than a to-be-treasured album.
Not so much of a progression, “Medulla” feels more like a side-project elevated to full status. Taking the calmer musical backing of “Vespertine” to the thousandth level, this album strips away music for the most part and is mostly ...

Medulla will chill your medulla when you listen to it.

by losingsunset , Nov 24 '04
Pros: Very experimental, fresh, and exciting, plus it's Bjork!!!
Cons: Maybe too odd and surreal for others.
This is my first Bjork album. I love Tori Amos, and everybody kept saying that Bjork was as good; so I had to listen to it. I was immediatly entranced by her voice, so exotic and fresh. So, I logged onto epinions and found that Medulla had come out. I ...

Medulla, Most Challenging Album to Date

by proud_democrat , Jun 28 '05
Pros: Beautiful, mind opening, much needed relief from the pop wasteland prominent today
Cons: One may lose one's patience before one "gets" it, too short
The first Bjork album I ever got was Homogenic when I was in the 5th grade. It scared the living hell out of me and that was that. Last year I recovered the album and bit and bit I began to like it, and then love it. Each of her albums is like this. ...

She had too much fun with this one...

by allneondude , Feb 13 '06
Pros: Very creative work! Bjork sounds great! Some songs send out really positive messages...
Cons: Ancestors; Disclaimer: This album is definitely not for Bjork beginners...
Bjork's 2004 album Medulla entered the music scene as a new approach to music-making.On this album, Bjork decided to do a great deal of experimenting and made the decision to do the entire album with human voices...down to the very ...

WARNING: For Hardcore Fans Only

by krunt , Jul 16 '05
Pros: Gutsy.
Cons: Pretentious. Not accessible even for many Bjork fans.
Bjork is very talented and a true musical artist. I respect her work. On Medulla though she falls into the age old trap that many artist fall into: TRYING TO BECOME ABSTRACT AS A WAY OF APPEARING PROFOUND! That essentially what she is doing on this ...

Certainly not as brilliant as Post. . .
by fizers ,Sep 19 '04
Pros: It's Bjork!
Cons: less work with music, more with vocals?
As always, Bjork is tremendously creative and innovative in her effort. Unfortunately, she has nearly failed in this endeavor. In exploring new territories, Bjork has entered a realm in which she experiments and utilizes the human voice as her main instrument. By this I tend to say that the musical vision which makes her previous albums so accessible is missing from this work. While the lyrics and her vocal work are impeccable as always, this album is simply missing something that was key in Bjork's previous albums: a sense of musical exploration, of going beyond the average album. Four of the tracks are quite excellent, but the remaining ten sound disappointingly alike. I only give this album four stars because she is Bjork and I will always adore her work. She is a true shining star.
