Prelude to Prologue Update

by ReDx , Aug 01 '00
Pros: Terry Kath, the lead guitarist gets to go all out and cut loose on this album, the horns add a unique thrill and there is a group effort that brings the feeling or Rock & Roll together, a double album track filled with great songs makes a good value
Cons: Robert Lamm writes the bulk material and the other members don't get a chance
Chicago was a Rock & Roll band with horns. Therefore many people quickly misinterpreted them to be another Blood, Sweat & Tears an early Jazz Rock band that managed to release a few gold albums in the early sixties, however...

Only The Beginning...

by jshawkeye , Jan 24 '04
Pros: Raucous, blaring horns that define an incredible style of music for 1969
Cons: Lots of filler space with war protest songs
I don't think that the horn-based rock band Chicago ever expected to end up where they are today. If you ask any one of them, I doubt you'd hear them say "well, I thought all along that we'd still be together and playing AMAZING shows into the 21st ...

A Masterpiece Distilled from a Bloated Effort

by caravan70 , Nov 26 '00
Pros: Incredible solo and ensemble work; one of the finest of the big band/rock hybrids of the late 60's.
Cons: Inflated protest numbers that miss the point and fill up space.
In The Dyer's Hand, a 1962 collection of literary ruminations, W.H. Auden gives us the following as one of the essential functions a critic can perform:

Convince me that I have undervalued an author or a work because I had not read...

First album is the greatest!

by kenbob331 , Oct 11 '03
Pros: This one is a rocker
Cons: FREE FORM GUITAR
I picked up the 1999 issue from Chicago Records about 2 months ago. I am in fact listening to it right now. This album is awesome. Here is a song by song review of it: Introduction (6:34) This song kicks it all off. From the first organ notes to the ...

What time is it, anyway?

by plorentz Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Sep 17 '02
Pros: Great songs, great band, and it's on Rhino.
Cons: The sound is somewhat dated.
Originally released in 1969, "Chicago Transit Authority" introduces us to the tight seven man "rock band with horns" that would produce dozens of hits in the 70s before transforming themselves into the kings of the powerballad in the 80s.

Chicago's First and Best

by randydt , Apr 26 '03
Pros: Highly energetic performances, emotional, great musicianship, Robert Lamm songs.
Cons: Relatively poor sound quality.
Over the course of more than three decades, Chicago has released 30 different albums. Despite this long and prolific career with tremendous commercial success, in my opinion their musical peak was their first release, Chicago Transit Authority. While a...

A Decent Debut

by DadtoKatie , Mar 30 '00
Pros: Some great performances and songs
Cons: “Free Form Guitar,” too many dragged out tunes
I bought the original vinyl album back in 1973 (I also have the CD version, too). At that point in time, anything with horns was fair game for my ears (I play sax). I still feel the sameway! Now that Rhino has re-mastered the original album, I thought it...
