Pros: superb acting, fantastic use of location, good story Cons: story a little unfocused
Summary: Giant is one of those legendary Hollywood movies. Based on Edna Ferber’s novel of the same title, it easily could have ended in disaster. It ran way over budget, with much of the filming done in Marfa, Texas which was in ... read more

Pros: Cast. Some humorous moments, shots. Cons: Plot. Very familiar. Direction. Soundtrack. Editing.
Summary: What defines a classic? Usually when we sit down and watch them, we're reminded. Classics are able to feel gripping and new decades after their release. Stylistic novelties abound in nearly every shot of movies such as Bringing Up Baby, The ... read more

Pros: Big Cons: The James Dean hype
Summary: I'm officially taking James Dean down from his pedastal now. There's a point where actor worship goes too far, and movie buffs everywhere have long passed it in Dean's case. Dean made three movies in his lifetime - a good movie (East of Eden) an ... read more

Pros: Amazing performances by James Dean, Liz Taylor and Rock Hudson Cons: Aging effects not well done - Rock and Liz look like Halloween masks.
Summary: Edna Ferber's novel, Giant is the massive epic of a Texas oil family from about 1930 to the mid-1950s, and as a film, probably the biggest that George Stevens ever directed. The 1956 three-hour film saga also is noteworthy for being the last ... read more

Pros: Great screen presence and acting by James Dean, Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson Cons: Somewhat drawn-out; dabbles with many issues at once

Pros: The story, setting, and the performances by Dean and Hudson Cons: <YAWN.> This is a LOONNNGGG film. Break out the caffeine.
Summary: I watched "Giant" because of James Dean. He's really the only person I recognized right away. I even failed to realize that Elizabeth Taylor was in the film(haha.) Anyways, this movie really is an epic, in story (and sadly, in length.)But it ... read more

Pros: Arguably, the first successful Hollywood "film novel." Strong tolerance theme. Tiomkin score. Cons: Some scenes are overlong.
Summary: GONE WITH THE WIND (1939) perhaps was its forebear, but, although there have been many since, no other American film resembles GIANT before 1956. We have to go back to Abel Gance's NAPOLEON (1927) or the early Italian epics to find films like it, and ... read more
