Pros: Its just a great, great film Cons: Can be melodramatic at times
Charlie Chaplin will forever be remembered for his influence in the genre of comedy and for being perhaps the most famous silent screen star ever. With masterpieces such as Gold Rush and City Lights, it is hard to deny such a statement. ...

Pros: Great comedy and drama. Meaningful Cons: Goes a bit over the top at the end.
The Great Dictator was directed by and starred Charlie Chaplin. I first discovered this movie for myself after teaching the book Night by Elie Wiesel. I had tried to find a movie to help finish up the unit. I wanted something that they...

Pros: Chaplin's mocking of Hitler is gut-busting laughter. The speech at the end says it all. Cons: Maybe that the Jewish barber should have had a name, instead of just "Jewish Barber"
Who would have ever thought that someone from my generation (I was born in 1978) would love a 1940 movie with Charlie Chaplin? When this movie was released, it was said that Chaplin was walking on thin ice, by making a movie about Hitler and the Nazi ...

Pros: this film is as timely as ever Cons: People still love their dictators, to this day
Charlie Chaplin and Adolf Hitler had more in common than just their shared taste in moustaches - the two men were born within days of each other, and Hitler was purportedly a great fan of Chaplin's, despite the German government's belief that he was a Jew ...

Pros: cast, script, direction, message Cons: ending, loosely structured
Charlie Chaplin's films always had their share of
social commentary, mixed in with a large dose of
humor. "The Great Dictator" is a very good film
that accomplishes both its goals: it is often
hilarious, and it...

Pros: Chaplin's trademark humor, the historic aspect of his first talkie, great reference when speaking of Chaplin or WWII, appeals to everyone with humor, romance, action, and political intrigue Cons: Chaplin? Cons? They don't go together.
Oh my. What a movie that every person should see. This is the first talkie ever done by the great Charlie Chaplin, and what a great start. Chaplin makes an excuisite film of perspective of second World War, and evinces a sense of serious emotionalism...

Pros: Charlie and his genius, very funny, strong worthwhile message, "the world" scene. Cons: None, really!
I caught The Great Dictator on TCM one night and subsequently rented it and will purchase it in future. This is Chaplin's first full talkie picture with Modern Times having given us a first listento his actual voice. It is a shame that the silent era ...

Pros: Classic Chaplin -- with the added joy of sound! Cons: This is one of the few movies for which I can find no cons.
The Great Dictator is one of the most brilliant jewels in the treasury of films by Charlie Chaplin. Perhaps the greatest comedian of the century, Chaplin successfully blended social commentary, romantic pathos, and plain old...

Pros: ahead of its time politically; some funny scenes Cons: clunky dialogue, uneven humor
When it was released in October, 1940, Charlie Chaplin's anti-Hitler satire "The Great Dictator" was one year ahead of its time and thirteen years out of date.
It was ahead of its time because, one year before Pearl Harbor,...

Pros: Exellent social comentary Cons: runs a little long
The Movie "The Great Dictator" dives very deep into many issues, which is something that is not very characteristic of this era of filmmaking. At the time that this movie was made people had not reached a point where they felt it was an...
