Orson Welles -The Lady From Shanghai -1948

by artbyjude Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 500, Dec 02 '01
Pros: Welles, Sloane,Anders and Hayworth. Incredible camera work
Cons: Editing that translated into pacing problems, and the music.
This movie can only be viewed as a flawed masterpiece. As it is, it has got to be better than 95% of the drivel that issues from Hollywood these days. It may be worth your time to see a little vintage Welles.

The flaws in this movie are based...

Orson Welles Walks the Dark Streets of Noir

by Grouch Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 200, May 05 '01
Pros: Can’t miss: the aquarium, the hall of mirrors, the Wellesian camera angles
Cons: Can’t stand: the jumbled story, the dull pace, the Irish accent
Let’s start this review with two quotes:

“A director is a man who presides over accidents.”

“When I start out to make a fool of myself, there’s very little can stop me. If I’d known where it would end, I’d never let anything...

Following the Rules of a Film Noir...

by Javelina Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, May 02 '01
Pros: Peek into a time 50 years ago, learn about film noir
Cons: Can be boring, requires thought and effort, complex
Filmed in 1948, “Lady From Shanghai” was written, directed and produced by the famous Orson Welles (Citizen Kane ring a bell?). Not only that, but Rita Hayworth played the main female character, opposite.. Orson Welles himself. The two were married at...

THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI: Before Evelyn, Before Judy: Elsa!

by macresarf1 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Apr 16 '00
Pros: Some brilliant scenes and performances. A dark, apocalyptic piece of surrealism.
Cons: "Criminal" cuts -- therefore disjointed continuity; an adequate, pedestrian musical score.
Whatever fan magazine myth swirled around him in 1948, when handsome 31 year-old Orson Welles came to write, direct, and star in THE LADY FROM SHANGHAI with his estranged wife Rita Hayworth, he was, in truth, a bitter man. He had much to be bitter...

"Lady" Sings the Blues

by bill_chambers , Oct 09 '00
Pros: Visually stunning; fine performances
Cons: At times butchered beyond comprehension
The post-mortem re-evaluation of Orson Welles' filmography has taken us down many a tenebrous corridor (Mr. Arkadin, The Trial), but the latest work from the great to find embrace in the arms of his enthusiasts was a big studio thing made in good...

So, where are you from?

by nathantyree Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 1000, Dec 18 '99
Pros: Welles, Hayworth, Anders, Sloane, but most of all The Camera
Cons: Not as well known as it should be
Orson Welles is known as the director of a handful of truly great films: Citizen Kane, The Magnificent Ambersons, Touch Of Evil, and The Trial. However, the film which may be his best is little remembered, and little discussed.

How Welles came...

Welles at his best!!!

by kkodey , Aug 30 '00
Pros: cinematography, plot twists
Cons: Welles' Irish accent
I have always loved Orson Welles as one of the great directors and actors of this generation, and The Lady of Shanghai has all the elements of one of the classic whodunit masterpieces in cinematic history. Welles underplays his role in a masterful,...
