Pros: Nice animation. It has some good sections from the book. Cons: Mediocre screenwriting, medium rendition, doesn't finish.
1978 saw the long anticipated release of the "Lord of the Rings" onto the big screen. J. R. R. Tolkiens epic, 3-volume book had never been, up until then, set to film. What resulted, was a disappointment for most movie goers, and for most Tolkien fans....
Pros: The first half hour isn't as awful as the rest Cons: You may as well ask me the cons of a stomach flu
Author's Note: It occured to me today that I made a mistake in this review when I wrote it (very late) last night. Rather than rewrite an entire chunk of it, I'll just point out the flaw here in the beginning. I said that Glorfindel was the elf ...
Pros: Some effective and spooky rotoscoping scenes (especially those with the Ringwraiths) Cons: Terrible script, too compressed, Sam Gamgee, Gollum, the Orcs...
I only had vague recollections of Ralph Bakshi's animated adaptation of The Lord of the Rings from when I watched it as a child.
About the only part I can remember from way back then is the sinister Black Rider sniffing its way towards the...
Pros: Fans may want it. Cons: Everyone else can skip it.
The Lord of the Rings movie (1978) is one to avoid. Fans who collect anything related to Tolkien, regardless of quality, may want it but the causal observer can take a pass on this one.
Any ardent Tolkien collector should probably have this video in their collection. Anyone else should give it a miss. The movie is fatally flawed on so many levels that it is difficult to know where to begin. However I will try.
Pros: I'm searching my memory for some. And yet . . . Cons: Animation, Costumes, Story, Characters, Conclusion, Purpose
"The Lord of the Rings" is a story that is difficult to retell without evaluating the work in comparison with the original novels. The latest (2001) film incarnation succeeds in all of the ways Tolkien fails, making an interesting film out of a...
Pros: Something to watch after reading the book Cons: Poor conversion, terrible animation, choppy and terribly cheap
It is impossible to survive calling the Lord of the Rings terrible books. Wether you are killed by the millions of fans with large swords and bows with arrows chasseing you, or the sheer comedic value of your statement which causes you to roll off a...
Pros: Wonderful animation Cons: They did not finish the stories
Many people that are J.R.R. Tolkein fans have not enjoyed this adaptation of the wonderful books Lord of the Rings, but I must be honest I enjoyed it thoroughly. I will give you my reasoning; I was introduced to the books through this film and true it...
Pros: how can you mess up JRR? Cons: incomplete in plot and details
Not that bad, really
This version of the Lord of the Rings gets a bad rap. Fans of JRR Tolkien just won't have it, and get angry at Bakshi for ruining "their" story. Well, it's true that this telling is imperfect. It...
Pros: Fairly faithful to the book. Cons: Too much left on cutting room floor
Adaptations of your favorite books are usually major disappointments, most often you end up wondering if the screenwriter ever read the book, or in as in this case, they have tried too hard, and ended up making the equvielent of orange juice concentrate,...
Pros: Beautifully Animated, Well Written, and Great Music Cons: Only Tells the 1st Half of "Lord of the Rings." Drags at Times
Yes, Bakshi's "Lord of the Rings" ends in the middle of Tolkien's original novel. Yes, the movie is very long (133 min.) for being only half a book. And yes, the movie does drag at times, but it is all worth it.
For all the...
Pros: maybe the background animation Cons: everything else
When I first heard about this movie when it was coming out in the theatres, I was beside myself with joy. Having been a Tolkien devotee for years, I couldn't wait to see the movie. And when I left the theatre I was in tears at what they had done to...
Pros: Pretty much nothing. Cons: Pretty much everything.
I would really like to know what version of The Lord of The Rings the producers of this.......abomination were reading. Perhaps the super-condensed ultra-simple one? This cartoonish thing was horrible.
Pros: Sets up scenes well, good animation, (American, not Manga), Rotoscoping Cons: Rotoscoping, only about half the story, some things out of sequence, etc. etc.
Ok, I'm a huge fan of Cartoons, I actually think some of Bakshi's work is pretty cool, (Wizards, Fire and Ice, etc.) and I love Lord of the Rings. So how do I feel about this? Eh. Shrug.
Ralph Bakshi's animated adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's revered Middle-earth saga captures the dark mood of the books extraordinarily well. The film co...More at Family Video
