Call Me Ishmael: Moby Dick

by George_Chabot George_Chabot is a Top Reviewer on Epinions in Movies, Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 50, Nov 09 '01
Pros: Direction, Special Effects, Score, Supporting Cast, Script
Cons: Peck miscast but still very good.
Director John Huston again proves he has what it takes when bringing gripping action to the silver screen. A riveting tale from start to finish, it is at its best in the stirring whaling sequences when Huston makes the viewer feel he is in the whaleboat...

Pros:

Cons:

MOBY DICK (1956); or The Whiteness of the Screen.

by macresarf1 Epinions Most Popular Authors - Top 100, Oct 28 '00
Pros: Wonderful location shooting at sea. A unique photographic process. Philip Sainton's robust, sensitive score.
Cons: Gregory Peck laboriously learns to create a classical character in the course of the movie.
"'Tis a mild, mild day, Starbuck . . ." So begins Captain Ahab's climactic scene, the final reflective mood, the last moment when his Quaker bred First Mate may stop him. After that, Ahab plunges into his final madness, taking his World to disaster....

true to the original story? YES - it's almost perfect!

by desoto_girl , Dec 23 '00
Pros: very accurate, even the author himself would approve!
Cons: missing some parts (what book-turned-movie isn't though??) and of course those "fabulous" fifties special effects, haha, the whale is hilarious
~WOW~ I was amazed... This movie actually won my picky approval. Usually all I do is complain endlessly that movies just butcher the story from what the author meant it to be, but this one is different. You can totally tell that the producers tried...

Down Rivers, Creeks, and Streams

by nelson1234 , Aug 09 '05
Pros: Excellent photography. Ethereal music/singing when the anchor is hauled in. Basehart, boylike and compelling.
Cons: Peck overacts. Rolls his eyes and snarls. He's mad, but he's not a lunatic.
From the beautiful cinematic beginning, where Ishmael (Richard Basehart) is gliding down past a rushing stream to the open view of the sea, Moby Dick relaxes and compels. There's a resonance of the sea about this movie, especially as it was filmed in ...
