Pros: Charlie Chaplin, Comedy, Paulette Goddard Cons: Inconsistent, stories are not really that related, score a little harsh
Modern Times (1936) Charlie Chaplin was best known for his "little tramp" character with the bowler hat, cane, loose pants, tight coat, big floppy shoes, and toothbrush mustache. He made lots of silent pictures all through the teens and ...

Pros: Chaplin with late refined filmmaking skills Cons: too episodic without strong overriding theme
One of the best Chaplin films, Modern Times took nearly a year to produce by Chaplin's own company and starring his younger companion Paulette Goddard as Gamine the orphaned girl who hustles for food and eventually finds herself the lead performer in an ...

Pros: Hilarious moments throughout the film Cons: The ending kinda irritated me
Before there was dialogue in films, all films were silent and had to be acted out through various gestures. There are many silent screen legends such as Rudolph Valentino, Buster Keaton, Lillian Gish and Harold Lloyd. But despite the number of silent...

Pros: Charlie Chaplin is hilarious, and there is some beautiful imagery. Cons: It's quite short, which leaves one desperately hungering for more.
I can't believe that it's taken me this long, as a film buff, to discover the genius that is Charles Chaplin. His hilarious antics here serve as both a Depression Era slapstick comedy and a timeless expression of the fact that machines are taking over. ...

Pros: Chaplin's unparalleled genius, Some great slapstick as well as more subtle comedy, Remarkable musical score that matches the film, Great political satire, Some of the best comedy acting you'll ever see Cons: Loosely constructed plot
There once was a time that films could not be digitally enhanced. It was an era without special effects, without Technicolor, and without sound. Before you think that no one should have to suffer through watching one of these films from the cave man...

Pros: One of the Tramp's finest hours Cons: The end of the silent-film era
Modern Times is one of my favorite Charlie Chaplin features, perhaps because it was the first one I saw in a theater, when it was re-released in 1972. (As a youngster in the pre-video era, my silent-film viewings were usually limited to screenings ...

Pros: sets, cast, direction, cinematography, score Cons: has some slow parts
"Modern Times" is Charlie Chaplin's last silent film. It is my favorite of his movies, at least of those that I've seen. It has several outstanding sets, and a great score. There are also many clever gags, and the Tramp character is, as always,...

Pros: Just a wonderful movie Cons: None
Not so modern, actually, but in the more than sixty years that have passed since Modern Times was released, it has remained one of the indisputably hilarious classics of the early Hollywood era. Charlie Chaplin, the king of the silent film, made his...

Pros: Hilariously funny, great expressions, a family film Cons: A little cheesy at times
The movie Modern Times was a silent film where the actors had to overemphasize their gestures and expressions. In this movie it seemed as though both the main protagonists were trying to escape the law throughout the entirety of the film. ...

Hard times during "Modern Times" (Re-Published)
by oz-ooms ,Apr 23 '04
Pros: A perfect movie. Just.....perfect. Cons: Some people may not enjoy the mostly silent format.
It seems so tragic now, that when you ask alot of normal 14 year olds now, they think that "The Little Tramp" is a rapper or something, but for those of us who know of Chaplins' life, his tributes and classics, for those of us who know of his great films, one of them is "Modern Times", one of Chaplins' last great films. The first to include talking, It went over very well with 1930's audiences. Chaplin in real life though, wasn't too pleased that the silent film era was coming to a close. In the film you can tell this by noticing several things. One of which is the fact that he still never speaks until the end of the film, and still, he sang in jibberish. I don't want to give away anything else, but I will say this. If you want a heart warming comedy that Disney just can't give you, "Modern Times" Is the best one you can find.
Bless Charlie Chaplin.
