Pros: Comedies just never quite get this funny these days. Cons: A modern viewer will be left wondering Huuuhh? at some of this.
Originally intended for the stage, director George Cukor took the Broadway smash and found a few big names to step in and take a part. And what a cast we get in this funny, witty, comedy of love and manners in upper-class Connecticut in the 1940's.

Pros: Cary Grant, James Stewart, Katharine Hepburn
Cons: Poor continuity between the wisecracks, characters don't seem related, stagy
The Philadelphia Story (1940) Katharine Hepburn is one of those rare women who seem to be more interesting and attractive when they get older. I liked her as a harridan in The
Lion in Winter and ...

Pros: Hepburn, Grant, Stewart in a love triangle with very sharp angles Cons: Filmed like a play; not bad, just expect it!

Pros: Excellent script and performances, especially Hepburn and Grant Cons: Could be funnier, a little long and stage-y
George Cukor's first rate comedy that's more romantic than screwball succeeds in skewering the upper class AND the working stiffs equally well. The script is fantastic and far surpasses the source it is based on, but contrary to what has been said...

Pros: One of the all-time great Star-Director combinations with extra Stars besides! Cons: Bite your tongue! It's unthinkable with this one.
If you watch this movie, even the possibility of such boredom becomes unimaginable. The move is, of course, The Philadelphia Story starring Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and James Stewart. Oddly enough, Hepburn was deep in a period of...

Pros: script, performance, direction...pretty much everything Cons: nothing stands out
It's hard for me to imagine Katherine Hepburn ever being described as "box office poison," but indeed she was. Before making The Philadelphia Story, Hepburn starred in three back to back flops, and it was enough for her to rethink where her career ...

Pros: Satire, comedy, and insight! Trio of top-notch actors. Cons: A slight "hammy" scene or two.
Life was a bit different in 1940; it even seems to have been black & white! Upper-crust society lifted its aristocratic nose to the working class.
But different or not, color or not, realistic or the stuff of fantasy, The Philadelphia...
