Pros: Good story about a true American hero Cons: A bit heavy-handed nationalism, suited to the times.
Truth is the first casualty of war, a point cleverly made but not belabored in the stirring story of Sgt.Alvin York. "Sergeant York" is a 1941 film with propagandistic elements meant to provoke nationalism as World War II looms over the American ...
Pros: The story, the cast and the acting were all excellent. Cons: None that I noticed
Sgt. York [turns down a quarter of a million dollars worth of endorsements] What we done in France we had to do. And some that done it, didn't come back. And that kind of thing ain't for buying nor selling. Directed by Howard Hawks Written ...
Pros: Cooper, charm, true story Cons: didn't get to philosophical in terms of arguments for/vs. pacifism
Sergeant York was a staple around my house. It is mom's favorite movie and often came out on Sunday afternoons when everything else on television was deemed "trash" (especially in light of the fact that it was Sunday...you'd think those network people...
I saw this movie because I heard that he caught 123 prisoners and did it all by his lonesome. Well, I wasn't disappointed!!!
But, that's not the end, so don't worry!
Here's some of the plot:
A backwood farm boy named Alvin C. York,...
Pros: Unbelievably true story of America's most incredible hero. Cons: So true to life it's difficult for most people to believe completely.
Nominated for eleven Academy Awards, winner of two, this is one of the all-time great movies to come out of Hollywood. Gary Cooper won the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Alvin C. York. Oddly enough, he won in part for his ability to make what...
Pros: Stellar cast, script, cinematography, and score Cons: Corny but it works
Director Howard Hawks "Sergeant York" depicts the life of the greatest American hero of the First World War -- called at the time "the war to end all wars." Well, through hindsight, we now know that it was followed a scant twenty years later with a...
"Sergeant York" is a very good, if sometimes unintentionally humorous, biography of Alvin York. York was one of the most famous heroes of World War I, killing 20 Germans and capturing another 130 single-handedly.
Pros: Realistic, action packed, lovable characters Cons: its in B&W
Sergeant York,Alvin C. York, was the most renowned hero of WW1.The character of Sgt.York is played by Gary Cooper. In my opinion this was Coopers greatest Oscar-winning performance. Its a classic for any WAR movie lover. Its great for history buffs...
A fairly good movie about a true American hero, but not perfect by the_mow ,May 28 '05
Pros: Gary Cooper and the true story. Cons: Battle scenes are not shot as good as they could have been.
Based on the life of Sgt. Alvin York, who single-handedly captured over 120 German troops during combat in World War 1, Gary Cooper shines in the title role.
"Sgt. York" is a pretty good movie, but there are better ones. It has romance, moral conflict and fair action scenes.
The acting is pretty well done, especially Cooper's performance. Many of the actors, especially the one who plays York's younger brother, seem to just recite their lines instead of making the words coming from their mouths their own.
The directing is also pretty well done, but it's not spectacular. The battle scenes could have been done much better.
The battle scenes are well done, although it is pretty obvious when the scene is shot in a studio, as the sky in the background is obviously fake.
Only see this movie because of the story behind it, not for the movie itself.
