  • Is it ambition that drives Johnny crazy, or being in an insane asylum?

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Dec 19, 2007
Pros: Stanley Cortez's cinematography, Hari Rhodes
Cons: Peter Breck pretending to be crazy by twitching, plausibility general implausibility

Summary: "Shock Corridor" (produced, written, and directed by Sam Fuller) has some passionate fans. I don't get it and think it is a pretty bad (thogh plenty hysterical) movie. I recognize that Fuller did a lot with little money--which admirable, but not enough ... read more

  • A fascinating (but messy) viewing

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Oct 17, 2011
Pros: It's got a strong vision, style & sense of purpose
Cons: Looking for logic in this might drive you insane.

Summary: SHOCK CORRIDOR is certainly an odd movie. I didn't really know too much about it, or its writer/director Sam Fuller prior to purchasing the Criterion BluRay. I wouldn't say I've become a fan, exactly, but the movie does exert a certain weird power. ... read more

  • Shock Corridor - laugh or cry - it's all the same

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Nov 21, 2003
Pros: Cult classic. B flick with a message. Strange stuff.
Cons: Most folks will love it or hate it.

Summary: Shock Corridor is shocking even now, so I can imagine how it went over in 1963. It’s certainly not traditional Hollywood fare though it packs a heavier punch than most B movies that disappear from the viewing landscape and never get a mention ... read more

  • Into the Abyss

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Aug 9, 2001
Pros: Savage critique of American society remains relevant.
Cons: Wooden lead performances, and an uneven first act that's hard to get through.

Summary: In epic fiction, there always comes a point when the hero must travel into the abyss. Odysseus is lost at sea for many years before he finds his way back to Greece. Dante has to travel through the Inferno of Hell before he can reach the Paradise of ... read more

  • What if there were no Wizard in Oz? Samuel Fuller’s Shock Corridor

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jun 8, 2001
    Pros: brilliant
    Cons: takes a little work

Summary: Before Apocalypse Now became the definitive retelling of L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz, Samuel Fuller’s brilliant B-movie masterpiece Shock Corridor (1963) lay claim to that odd distinction. It is a deliriously schlocky ... read more
