Pros: Comic view of a WWII POW camp Cons: A little over long
Stalag 17 (1953) Billie Wilder was one of the few directors that could tackle any subject - even sticky ones like alcoholism in a time when everybody had some family member or knew someone that was under its spell. Nobody ...

Pros: everything. Cons: none
I grew up on Hogan's Heroes, which I was told was inspired by the movie Stalag 17. This was the favorite show of my childhood. I remember trying to watch Stalag 17 when I was 10 because I enjoyed Hogan's Heroes so much. Back then, I thought it was awful....

Pros: Wilder, Holden, Wilder, Strauss, Wilder, Lembeck, and Wilder Cons: When I find one, I'll let you know
Billy Wilder is a name to conjure with. 21 Academy Award nominations during his career, and a cornucopia of films that have found their way into the "favorite" lists of virtually every movie fan (at least those over 30) in America. Of his...

Pros: fabulous acting, a sensational story, good comic relief Cons: none
(I'd like to dedicate this Epinion to those that fought and died for this country in our various military operations, from the American Revolution through the Gulf War, in honor of Memorial Day 2001)
Stalag 17 started out as a...

Pros: cast, direction, script, sets, Holden, Preminger Cons: some characters and comic relief overdone
Billy Wilder produced, directed and co-wrote the screenplay for "Stalag 17", a drama and comedy based on a World War II prisoner of war camp in Germany. The characters of Duke, Dunbar, and Joey are sometimes overly dramatic, and the comic...

Pros: Believable characters...engrossing storyline Cons: none
I can't tell you how many times I've seen this movie, but I can quote most of it! The characters are engrossing and believable, and the narrating is very well done. It is told from the perspective of "Cookie," one of the prisoners of Stalag 17. The ...

Pros: Story, Acting Cons: humor, other acting
While Stalag 17 might be marketed as a prison drama, its true essence is a wicked civics lesson. American prisoners put together ostracize William Holden because they think he is leaking information to the Germans. More than just a war story with...

Pros: the humor contrasting the drama, was very well handled Cons: none
Billy Wilder is a genius! When people think of Billy Wilder, they mostly think about "The Seven Year Itch," or "Some Like It Hot," but people do not consider him as a great dramatic director. That's where they'd be wrong. Sure Billy Wilder is famous...

When Johnny comes marching home again
by myystic ,May 28 '04
Pros: Funny, engrossing and different Cons: A little drug out
Growing up in a house with older parents made me appreciate older movies and actors. I was young when I watched Stalag 17 for the first time and I wasn't impressed. However, after I was married I had the opportunity to watch it on AMC (American Movie Classics) with my husband and he begged me to give it a second chance. It was a favorite of his growing up.
The movie takes place in a German POW camp. It really has less to do with the war though, as it does with the men in the camp getting through life day to day in a prison-like setting.
As a rule, I generally don't care for war movies of any type, but Stalag 17 mixes comedy with the seriousness of the situation and comes out smelling like a rose.
There is a turn coat in their midst however, and it's one of the few movies that kept me guessing who it was through out the majority of it. When found, the snitch gets his just rewards for turning his back on his fellow Americans.
