  • Road Rage

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jul 17, 2001
Pros: DeNiro and Scorcese are arguably the best director/actor team in Hollywood
Cons: An incredibly violent film...definitely NOT for the faint of heart

Summary: Robert DeNiro is the consummate performer. He can take just about any character and make you believe not only in the role, but in the character's ambitions, motivations and fears. It is, with this in mind, that I focused on Travis Bickle, the ... read more

    Jan 13, 2013
Pros: Meticulously assembled, amazing performances all around, exceptionally violent even by today's standards
Cons: Probably slow moving for many people

Summary: Taxi Driver is many things, but at its heart it's a portrayal of a character. That character, Travis Bickle, portrayed by Robert DeNiro, is the controlling force of the film. There are a few films such as A Clockwork Orange and A Serbian Film where the ... read more

  • A masterpiece in film, and Scorcese's best. 97%

    Dec 21, 2011
Pros: Thrilling atmosphere, strong central character, great supporting cast, great music, and intense.
Cons: Can be a little slow at times.

Summary:   Yep, that's right, I think this is Martin Scorcese's best movie. Even better than Goodfellas, Casino, or Raging Bull (all fantastic movies, mind you). I first came across Taxi Driver back in December of 2006 when it was on AMC, and while I ... read more

  • Hollywood hated NY in 1976

Rated a Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Apr 26, 2011
Pros: Other than learning the history of "You talking to me?"
Cons: It's depressing, probably inaccurate, and dumb.

Summary: It's rare that I feel compelled to rate a "classic" such as this. But after suffering through this marvelous, inane travesty, I felt the need to call a spade a spade or a duck a duck!  Martin Scorcese has done much better ... read more

  • Martin Scorsese's History Of Violence

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Oct 10, 2010
Pros: Script, direction, acting, cinematography and so on.
Cons: Only if you don't like movies that get under your skin like a mosquito bite.

Summary: It's a line. It's one that you've doubtlessly heard many times. One that you've probably said many times. Sometime when you're on the phone with a person and they say something and you're not sure it was directed at you. So what do you say?You ... read more

Pros: Scorsese, De Niro, script, iconic, invigorating to watch
Cons: If you don't like violence or provocative storytelling...

  • Taxi Driver - DeNiro at his very best

    Dec 4, 2008
Pros: Great acting, direction, cinematography and an overall wonderful movie
    Cons: none found

Summary: Directed by the great Martin Scorsese, staring Robert De Niro, Cybill Shepherd, a very young Jodie Foster and Harvey Keitel, this hard-hitting, gritty urban classic is undoubtedly one of the best movies ever made. The StoryTravis ... read more

  • Perfect example of a "Flawed Masterpiece"

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Apr 15, 2008
Pros: Intricate detail of character and mood; De Niro's performance; wholly original.
Cons: Some inconsistencies in the screenplay; becomes a bit too surreal.

Summary: What's great about the movies is they allow us to get to know anonymous strangers. Usually the characters we meet are likable and relatable, but "Taxi Driver" tries to rob us of the innocence we're used to with a character study of a person everyone's ... read more

  • Taxi Driver: One of these days I'm going to get organized

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jun 23, 2007
Pros: Realistic, forces you to see through the characters eyes.
Cons: Can leave you with a 'heavy' or 'dark' feeling, not good for kids.

Summary: When I watch an American film from the 1970s or 1980s I really look for the ones that give us a gritty sense of reality built in. Granted, I don't remember the 1970s at all and in the 1980s I never visited the places most movies in this style are set ... read more

Pros: Dramatic Classic, must-see at this point, great direction/acting/story
Cons: Maybe too much for the sensitive gory.

Summary: Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver (1976) has become one of the iconic landmark films of a decade filled with unique vision and story. Taxi Driver functions on many levels of character and interaction. The film follows Vietnam vet, loner on the edge, ... read more

    Mar 25, 2005
    Pros: great performances all around
    Cons: not entertaining at all

Summary: Ah, "Taxi Driver". It's one of the movies I've decided to review, but I just can't figure out quite what to say about it. Well, it's certainly though-provoking, I'll give it that. It gets under the skin. It's one of those movie you spend hours, even days ... read more

  • Listen, you screwheads, here is a man who stood up

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jan 16, 2005
Pros: So many that they all melt into one...overall excellent.
Cons: Voiceovers by De Niro occasionally pompous; Herrmann's score sometimes grating.

Summary: "Taxi Driver" is not only one of the Great Films of the '70s and of all time, but I think it's also a textbook example of how to do a movie right. Working from Paul Schrader's taut garrote of a script, Martin Scorcese crafted what may be called a perfect ... read more

Pros: Excellent Acting, Directing, and Screen Play
Cons: Not a lot of extras

Summary: This movie asks a few questions that we all (or at least I have) asked: if ya' kill the bad guys does that make you a good guy? This movie is one of my personal favorites for a reason. First off, Scorcese is one of my favorite directors. Nearly all ... read more

Pros: Robert De Niro, soundtrack, colors, setting, acting.
Cons: Blatantly violent, plot holes (few).

Summary: "Taxi Driver" is an unrelenting movie about one man’s quest to find a peace of mind. "Taxi Driver" is the story of how one man’s alienation and culture shock can lead to metal breakdown. Or is "Taxi Driver" an enchanting fable on how ... read more

    Jan 5, 2003
Pros: Great Acting; Great Plot;Casting Impeccable
Cons: Very little; One must occasionally suspend his sense of reality

Summary: Mainly, this is the story of Travis Bickle; a man who seems to want to just fit in,"become a person like everyone else"; his ideals and morals are upstanding, even "square" as Iris, the young prostitute played by Jodie Foster, says. We know ... read more

    May 13, 2002
    Pros: Great Acting, Very Realistic.
Cons: Gory, Sometimes Hard To Understand.

Summary: This film is one of Robert De Niro's finest. His character is a perfect example of how war can mess people up. It also gives you a realistic insight on teenage prostitution, about how openly visible it is. Jodie Foster is brilliant as the hooker Iris ... read more

Rated a Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Sep 28, 2001
Pros: DeNiro's first major film, so it's great to see how he's progressed in his career
Cons: Violence, language and a story it's hard to care about

Summary: Born in 1967, I was far too young to see Taxi Driver when it came out in theaters. But with the advent of DVDs, my filmmaker husband and I decided to rent the movie to see what all the fuss was about. It was a career maker for so many and after seeing ... read more

  • God's Lonely Man-a study of alienation

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Sep 26, 2001
Pros: Powerful and disturbing. DeNiro's best performance, and all too real
Cons: violent, relentless-and all too possible

Summary: There is nothing that emphasizes loneliness more than being alone in a crowd. This film was powerful, dynamic, shocking and deeply disturbing in 1976, when I lived in New York City. It accomplished two things for me. 1) I never again hailed a cab to get ... read more

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Aug 29, 2001
    Pros: Read the review.
Cons: The review title may raise more than a few eyebrows.

Summary: "You talkin' to me?" Those four words, spoken by cabbie Travis Bickle, come at about the mid-point of this movie, and, for twenty-five years, they seemed to completely sum up the entire point of the movie. But they don't. The thing ... read more
