  • Strange How an Unpleasant Child Can Be a Decent Dog!

Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
    Jul 28, 2005
Pros: Landmark special effects for its day, charmingly magical quality, excellent performances by Sabu and Veidt
Cons: Some lame dialog, poor script continuity, dated special effects, and weak performance by John Justin

Summary: The role of producer varies tremendously from one film to another. Sometimes producers merely furnish the financial backing; other times they shepherd a film through the entire creative process. Probably never has a producer played a larger role in a ... read more

    Pros: Astounding special effects.
Cons: No great feat of acting.

Cons: John Juston's whining, obnoxious hero and some pompous themes and dialogue

Pros: Sabu, Conrad Veidt, June Duprez, Rex Ingram. A marvelously entertaining fantasy. Classic Movie Magic.
Cons: It was made in 1939, if that bothers you

Summary: Enchantment is a funny thing. If you simply want the magic of it -- transporting music, the magician, a puff of smoke, exciting illusions, the gorgeous babe, the shirtless hero, the blind seer, a cheeky lad, a friendly dog, a mythological monster, a ... read more

  • 60 Years Later, the Fantasy Still Endures

Pros: Reflecting optimism in the midst of World War II, it's an amazing feat of story-telling.
Cons: The story lags, the transitions are clumsy and the dialogue is often campy.

Summary: Back in 1940, "Thief of Bagdad" won Oscars for Cinematography (George Perinal), Set Design (Vincent Korda) and Special Effects (Lawrence Butler) and Best Original Score (Miklos Rozsa), so I thought it was time to re-view this lavish Technicolor ... read more

    Pros: sets, cinematography, costumes
    Cons: characters, story, direction

Summary: "The Thief of Baghdad" was an elaborate technicolor remake of the 1924 silent classic. Producer Alexander Korda struggled mightily to make the film, going through six directors, and he was forced by the war to move the final production from ... read more
