Pros: where do I begin?? Clift, Taylor, Winters... Cons: the ending may seem overly dramatic and a tearjerker; blame Dreiser.
For a movie filmed in Lake Tahoe, California, swanked by the 17-year old radiance of Elizabeth Taylor and dark good looks of 29-year-old Montgomery Clift, one would think 1951's Golden Globe winner for Best Picture would be a happy, celebratory event of t ...

Pros: Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor, Shelley Winters, Direction, Story, Score Cons: Needs recognition: This is what cinema is all about
A Place in the Sun (1951) I dont know why it took me so long to watch A Place in the Sun; actually I thought it was a syrupy chick-flick for some reason, probably associated with the (gag inducing to me) song by Stevie Wonder. How ...

Pros: Acting, direction, story, technically sound Cons: Overly melodramatic at times and the score overreaches at times
Its funny. I guess its true what people say about films back in the 1950s. You cannot make films like they did back then any more. Either these films are dated or have been made so well that there is no point in remaking them. Well, now it may not be ...

Pros: Compelling story of impossible love, beautiful black and white cinematography Cons: It's not on AMC or TCM often enough
If you're in the mood for a tragic love story that captures all the best elements of Romeo and Juliet, West Side Story and The Great Gatsby, rent A Place in the Sun,the 1951 classic directed by George Stevens.

Pros: direction, script Cons: over-the-top courtroom scenes, unsympathetic characters
A few of us are happy with what we got, but most of us want more, more, more! Some of us dont have the ambition or the nerve to claw our way to the top, but a select few are ruthless in achieving success. A select few of those select few would ...

Pros: Clift's matchless riveting performance; Wilson and Brown's screenplay Cons: -
Montgomery Clift would only take up films where his characters could manifest a part of his own inner turmoil. He would refuse to do roles with which he couldnt identify, choosing instead characters that would provide him the avenue of self ...

Pros: this is my favorite movie, need I say more? Cons: ha! nope none here
Montgomery Clift’s power of expression comes out in full power. His portrayal of a love-shattered George moves many and shatters some. Clift’s ability to push his feelings so close to the surface gives him astonishing emotional clarity in the role. At...

Pros: Powerful story of love and love lost. Cons: Depressing ending. Might be considered a pro.
Engrossing love and success story of Cliff's character George Eastman. George is driven based on his spartan, missionary upbringing, and his need to be a man of consequence in the secular world. Based on his uncle's side of the family he has a chance...

Pros: montgomery clift Cons: short, not enough depth, misses the true story
There is no denying Montgomery Clift's excellent portrayal of George Eastman and Elizabeth Taylor's soft spoken Angela Vicar, but the story is much more compelling than this movie suggests.
This movie is based on Theadore Dreiser's AN AMERICAN...

Clift's brilliant performance is A Place in the Sun
by peterct ,Dec 01 '04
Pros: Famous film Cons: at times a wee melodramatic
This famous film derives most of its power from Clift's brilliant performance, that is haunting, hesitating, terse and melancholy. He brings a passive intensity for men on the screen. The films black and white photography is flawless. Stevens directs the camera with elegant fade outs and at other times with immense shattering closeups. That scene on the terrace with Clift and Taylor is famous.
Winters is also brilliant as the dowdy working girl. While this is Taylors best effort to date. Franz Waxmans score is also top notch. George Stevens rightly won an oscar for best direction.
